I'm Essa, a lioness nonhuman (@werelioness). I've decided to start a blog designed to help fellow animal folks to make life around us a little better.
What this blog will contain:
Home ideas. A really broad category. Decors, items, accessories, vibes, DIY. (tag #therio care home ideas)
Food ideas fitting for various animals yet safe for human vessel. (tag #therio care food ideas)
Species self-care tips. (tag #therio care self-care)
Important!
1. This blog's theme will be for existing animals only, as I'm personally not much knowledgeable about other types like mythical creatures and their lifestyles. I can't say much on them and I don't want to say anything wrong about stuff I don't know, sorry...
2. It's just ideas and you don't have to follow them strictly. Maybe the DIY materials may be expensive where you live, maybe the food won't be nice to your own taste, maybe you can't or don't do this activity, I can't know everyone's abilities and preferences. I'll definitely try to do some variety, and you of course are free to change stuff to your liking.
(last edited march 11, 2026: added cryptid category, minor reorganization, and a bunch of small additions to a bunch of different categories)
Please suggest anything if you want to add anything! I've tried to include a ton of different creatures and things, and I want to add as many as I can to this list!
Table of contents (in order): birds, mammals, herps, aquatic, insect/arachnid, divine, without solid form, cryptid, plants, objects
First of all, let's get the well-known stuff out of the way:
Vocals
Quads
Masks, tails, wings, ears, paw gloves, collars, whatever other common gear items
Artistic expression (makeup, drawing, etc)
And now, for the more unique ideas (many ideas are repeated for different creatures):
Birds
Sing. join a singing group or take lessons
Wear long jackets that flow in a breeze
Find high places to sit
Build nests
Feather boas as decoration and part of outfits
Wear colorful clothes if applicable to species
Birds of prey
Apple bobbing (simulating hunting fish)
Flamingo
Practice standing on one foot
Drink lots of water (filter feeding)
Mammals
Sharpen long nails
Avoid shaving
Grow a mustache as whiskers (if possible)
Wear furry jackets, leg and arm warmers, furry anything. The world is your oyster.
A lot of gear suggestions aren't conducive with workplace or school dress codes, might be unsafe for some, or just aren't everyone's style. Here’s some ideas for understated nonhuman expression that's not just "wear a graphic print".
If this post inspires you to buy anything, please shop secondhand where you can!
CLOTHING
Fabric choices - Animal print or fur isn't the only option! Focus on which textures you associate with your ‘types. Maybe you like heavier fabrics like wool or leather, wrapping you in a protective layer. Maybe you enjoy the lightweight feel of silks and linen that flutter in the wind. Maybe the structure of sturdy denim feels like a chassis. What feels right against your skin?
Cut - This refers to the shape or style of a garment. What silhouettes read as your ‘types? Maybe you want to add bulk via a boxy blazer with shoulder pads. Maybe sleek, straight cut trousers or a pencil skirt is more you. Look up cuts of jeans if you're new to this and want to start somewhere!
Socks - Maybe they're full on novelty socks, maybe they've got hoof prints on the underside. Fun and subtle!
Shoes - Big platforms or steel toe boots might remind you of hooves, or running shoes can keep you nimble and quiet on your toes. From an aesthetic standpoint, pay attention to the colour and textures. Maybe a brown suede reminds you of your paws, maybe metal hardware reminds you of your shell.
ACCESSORIES
Watches - These could be subtle, with just a strap colour your associate with your ‘type, or a full on statement piece that looks like alien technology. I picked mine because it reminds me of a cat collar.
Cat collar bracelets - Speaking of, these just look like leather bracelets and are a hell of a lot subtler than wearing a dog collar!
Glasses frames - Does the shape of your frames feel insectoid? Round and owl like? Square and boxy? How do they transform the shape of your face? Of course, a relevant colour or pattern is also an option!
Pins & Brooches - These could be colourful enamel pins or small simple vintage brooches. Wear them on your clothes or bags.
Belts - This can be a great place to introduce heavier textures like reptile skin or suede, or you can go the opposite direction and use fabric or rope. A statement buckle can be a fun addition if you want to get a bit flashier!
TL;DR Thinks about these two things: what feels right in a sensory way (good textures, lines up with phantom shifts) and what looks right to you (colours, patterns, how fabric sits on your body).
back at this for now :) I just don't want the information to get too repetitive !!! plus it's a bit difficult to cover all species of seal ykwim ?? idk take it with a grain of sea salt ! they're fun to make so I'm just gonna do whatever and hopefully it can still be helpful to y'all !
I added a new section this time around; altar ideas. I think it'll be helpful and will be nice to flesh out the guide. I also think that, even if you don't want an altar, having items like the ones listed around may help you feel closer to your type. some of my experience is aesthetic-based and I needed somewhere I could shove all of those things. I like it ! I hope you do too :)
I highly recommend giving this a read through. it's a biography of someone studying vulture behavior. extremely interesting !!!
also, alveus sanctuary has lots of information on birds of prey. the people who work there have lots of really interesting stories and information about vultures ! I'm definitely bias because I love alveus, but if you think it'd feel nice to feel closer to other vultures or to just learn about them, they are definitely an amazing recourse !

things to do to affirm/connect with your ferret side
it goes without saying, but please listen to your body and feed it what it needs. these snacks are only supplementary**!
I got this idea from an amino I joined !! I noticed there aren't really a lot of things for ferret therians, especially in a large collection. ( the only things I could find were like.. "meditate... do quads.. make nest.." )
I love learning about animals so I thought this would be fun !! I hope it helps some of you connect with your ferret selves :) I may be opening to taking requests if people like this !
Therians and otherkin are next!! (Usually I use YouTube videos as tutorials but I’m boycotting so I’m going to use Pinterest until cobalt download YouTube again)

bird wing tutorial
Bunny ears tutorial
puppy ear tutorial
Kitty ears tutorial
For coloring ears
pointed elf ears
bigger elf ears
Antlers
paper mache horn method
hard horn method

speaking of horns
if you use any prosthetics instead of the silicone adhesive things like prosaide spirit gum or even eyelash glue work well but the wig tape also works still because toupees are made of silicone so wig tape works on prosthetics also I know people make masks and stuff out of foam but I also heard they can be 3D printed and made out of material that doesn’t get as hot and sweaty
adhesive and adhesive remover information
deer skull pattern
bird mask pattern
lion mask tutorial
floppy dog ears on a mask tutorial
mask tutorial(I’m assuming this is with Eva foam pieces and foam clay)
3D mask files(costs money and requires a 3D printer) fur fabric and feathers can be glued to printed masks also you can use foam to carve out scales. or just sand and paint the masks
for sculpting masks and ears the cheapest and easiest way is cardboard or Eva foam sheets and you can also sculpt on that foam with foam clay with is compatible with Eva foam that wasn’t explained in there but I figured it was worth mentioning
contacts,
Big black eyes contacts smaller medium big (for seals or other animals with huge black eyes)
big blue
all of these ones below are like cat eye or lizard eye types
yellow
blue
another blue
green
white
red
gold with blue rim
yellow and red
orangy gold
blue and red
big yellow
big green
big red
depending on if you get disposible contacts or not you might need those(which can also be bought in corner stores like cvs)
eyedrops and contact solution
lense cases
fang tutorial
for whiskers youd use that clear elastic string people use for bralet making youd have to get this at a local craft store you could also use clear elastic thread for thinner whiskers
and you can use the eyebrow section of the owl tutorial to make eyebrows and feather pieces or scales, or use this scale tutorial anywhere like your cheekbones or the sides of your face etc and another for dragon scales
paw gloves tutorial
Gradient arms with claws
converse claws
converse paw print
foxfires fantasy paw and foot pattern(this would cost money)
snail shell and eyes
entire owl, arm wings, headpiece and feathered eyebrows (again use freetube)
Articulated wings out of umbrella (you can use freetube to avoid youtubes tracking, age verification, and to avoid giving youtube veiws) ok i couldnt find part two to that so id use this and this with this articulation guide
note if you use the fishing rod method instead of the umbrella method id recommend getting your hands on bamboo finishing rods or plastic cable rods instead of fiberglass ones so you can cut into it safely and easily to use the articulation method and make your wings articulated as well as lighter then the umbrella method and they have that bending quality that looks more realistic
lastly feathers are usually silky and shiner then foam so you should use a shiny coating on the foam after painting them to get the right look and remember you want your feathers to look right for your size so using like normal craft store feathers would be too small because your wings would be bigger then the other birds super thin eva or foam, or polycell packing foam, or buying massive feathers in bulk off places like etsy or specialized craft or feather stores online is your best bet
this can make fairy wings or bee or dragonfly type wings
the shiney clear stuff is holographic cellophane
turtle shell ( part 1 https://youtu.be/pSq5QcSXMqk?si=BbIgUScc9RlxPxdB part 2 https://youtu.be/a6woTxJ0Nb4?si=qguL-x_va7UEGxSn part 3 https://youtu.be/XDRsjn7Wjb8?si=lkOum2QI2ybIz1j )
back bending animal legs (faun but they can be altered. twisted goes over all the options for these back bending legs and where to find those tutorials in the beginning of twisteds tutorial. and use freetube instead of youtube)
Big fluffy tail tutorial can be altered to make it not so big
hyper Mobil tail tutorial
yarn tail tutorial
demon could be altered to make little lizard tail
and a fish tail sleeping bag pattern that can be altered to fit walruses, seals, sharks, etc

I haven’t seen any tips for ants yet, and as an ant myself, it’s my duty to make this my first post lol. This list can also be useful for non-adult ant therians, for the most part!
1. Build routines around colony-style thinking. I personally enjoy collecting things (especially plants, vulture culture, and other nature-y things), cooperative hobbies (such as playing Minecraft with friends), organizing (extra tip: go get a calendar and some journals/notebooks to organize your life and make a schedule to help you keep track of how to keep your house and car clean), and having a structured daily schedule. These activities mirror ant instincts!
2. Connect with other adult therians. They don’t have to be ants (I know we’re hard to come by lol). Adult therian spaces tend to focus more on self-understanding, spirituality, psychology, and balance rather than just roleplay alone. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy roleplaying as my theriotypes, but for me it’s about embracing my spiritual past-life identities and how they manifest in my current-life psychological identity.
3. Creative outlets can help a lot. Keeping ants in a formicarium you designed yourself, designing and keeping vivariums in general, building things in Minecraft with friends, brainstorming some colony-inspired worldbuilding for that book you really want to write (or the D&D campaign you really want to run), creating an ant thri-keen character for that D&D campaign you’re joining soon, drawing maps (with tunnels ofc) for the D&D campaign you’re running, and maybe even some macro photography, just to name a few ideas!
4. A general tip, but also an important one: Don’t pressure yourself in trying to “prove” your theriotype(s), even if you’re only trying to prove them to yourself. Experiences vary widely between individuals, so try not to feel like you’re “faking” and panic over it just because your experiences are different from others! Speaking from experience here, especially since ants are one of the more unusual theriotypes out there!
5. Explore movement and sensory habits. I enjoy practicing quadrobics, gym workouts (mostly strength training, but I also plan on taking a martial arts class), carrying or laying under weighted objects (weighted plushies and blankets my beloved), choosing clothes and other objects with interesting but also sensory-safe textures, and following trails during hikes/walks (similarly to how ants follow the pheromone trails of other ants)!
6. Find safe, subtle forms of expression. Creating art, making subtle ant-related gear and jewelry (you could also wear an antennae headband on Halloween if you’re like me and don’t have the confidence to wear one in public on any other day), journaling, and making a playlist that reminds you of being an ant are some subtle ways I personally express myself.
7. Observe real ant behavior. Watching colonies, trail systems, nest building, and communication patterns can help you connect with your theriotype in a grounded way. This can be done outside, or even better, using a formicarium!
8. Watch for burnout. Ant-associated mindsets can lean toward overwork and stress. Rest matters too. <3
i wanted to compile a list of foods for equine alterhumans to eat to connect to their equinity, alleviate dysphoria, evoke euphoria, etc.
but remember, your dietary needs and wants don't dictate how valid your alterhumanity is. you can still be a horse if you don't want to eat a horse diet, or don't enjoy these kinds of foods!!
!!! also, i encourage you to do your own research, especially before eating plants you forage for yourself.

From sugar cubes to apples, most of the treats we give to our horses on occasion are perfectly fine, but there are items from your kitchen c
Learn how to eat dandelions, from the flowers to the leaves, these weeds can be delicious.
Clover is a plant with over 250 varieties. This article covers if clover is edible, its benefits, and its downsides.
Burritos! I've recently found that they're really good for tearing into with my teeth like ripping into prey. 10/10 would recommend going absolutely feral on your burrito. Pizza is pretty good for this too
In a similar vein, soft fruit that you can tear off chunks of with your teeth is also great for this, especially if they're really juicy. I like to do this with cooked pineapple (specifically cooked because it's softer and easier to tear pieces off of). I've also heard of "shower oranges", where you take an orange into a shower to eat it so you can be as messy with it as you want, and in a place where it's relatively easy to clean it up (and apparently it smells amazing too, if you like the smell of citrus).
Tear up some lunch meat and mix it in with rice-- I don't know why, but this works, at least for me. It's very good. I like to do it with turkey.
If you have a kintype that crunches on bones like a Tasmanian devil, try pretzel sticks! You can also stick marshmallows on either end of them and cover them in white chocolate for a treat that looks like a bone too.
Speaking of bones, whenever I eat bone-in chicken I like to crack open the bones, then dig out and eat the marrow. Be extra careful if you try this though because the broken edges can be very jagged and sharp.
I've never tried this before, but I think it might be fun or affirming to do some exercise like running, and then "reward" yourself with food afterwards, to simulate hunting. Even though you don't actually catch the food, I think that running specifically to eat food afterwards might still recreate that feeling a little bit. If anyone tries this do let me know if it works!
Try to find candy / snack versions of your prey, like marshmallow mice, peeps, sugar or gummy insects (Annie's makes bug-shaped fruit snacks that I like!), Swedish fish, animal crackers, etc. Some of them, like the ones made of marshmallow or gummy, are also great for tearing into like I mentioned about burritos and fruit.
If your kintype eats insects, there are plenty of places to find actual insects sold as food like fried crickets. There are shops that sell these online, and I believe you can also find them in Asian markets or the like. (And if you don't like to eat real insects, there are candy versions like I mentioned above!)
Jerky is also really great for satisfying prey drive, but if you don't like jerky or are vegetarian, fruit leathers have a similar texture.
Let me know if you've tried any of these and if they work for you, and if you have any other ideas do tell me so I can add them!!
For house cats
with a silly werecat bonus under the cut
Room:
If I Fits, I Sits. Get a BIG BOX - from like a washing machine.
Toys. Cat toys. Plush prey toys you can carry in teeth. Or a plush kitten.
Make a cat bed with blankets rolled up to make the sides.
Food:
Meat.
Breakfast cereal.
Dried bread/rusk/croutons/seasoned croutons.
My silly cat eats everything he can find, even fruits, so don't limit yourself and eat what you want.
Activities:
Sleep more.
Sun-bathe. Find a warm, sunny spot on the floor or near a window and spend time lounging or taking a nap.
If you can, climb a high place and look around like a cat in a high tree.
Clean hands very nicely and put jam on to lick off.
Or lick the plates, spoons etc. in general.
Stretching. Agility training. Yoga.
Bunt (headbutt) things. Rub cheeks on your belongings.
Turn on "Cat TV" on Youtube.
Tip from my own experience: get metal rings that are shaped like claws and go scratch trees with them - I confirm it's very fun, I do it too. But not scratch TOO hard so your fingers won't hurt. My post about it here.
Looks:
Long nails.
Kim Possible style makeup with a dark upper lip.
Clothes with colors of your fur.
Numerous cat socks (good for hands too)
There are also pretty (not sturdy, so not for scratching) claw rings.
Draw claws with pen on your fingers like I did here.
I hope you liked my tips. If I come up with something new, I'll edit and add other ideas here.
The bonus for werecats from the times of AHWW:
As a fun aside, here is a list depicting 20 ways to know you're a Werecat:
1.) You panic when your mom talks about spaying or neutering the house cat
2.) When you walk by a sandbox, you have the urge to relieve yourself
3.) When you hear a catfight in the neighborhood, you puff up twice as big
4.) At the zoo all of the big cats sit still and stare at you...
5.) You can't get from your car to the front door without the neighbor's dogs chasing you
6.) You feel more comfortable sleeping in tree limbs than in a bed
7.) You would rather lick yourself from head to toe than take a shower
8.) When Spring rolls around you can't stop peeing on furniture and caterwauling
9.) Mice suddenly seem like a tempting gourmet
10.) The "Meow Mix" theme song suddenly makes sense
11.) You shed everywhere
12.) During Spring the neighborhood cats won't leave you alone
13.) You get chased up trees a lot
14.) The dogs that chase you see you shiftshape and retreat, yipping, holding their tails between their legs
15.) You've been sharpening your claws on the furniture
16.) People in the neighborhood are disappearing and you wake every morning with the window open and blood on your hands (just a joke!)
17.) You have an uncontrollable urge to sashay as you walk
18.) You lament at the lack of Werecat films and books
The home ideas post (DIY bones! 🍗🦴🍖) was just dropped, time for a new teaser!
It takes lots of time to make new posts, to learn about the topic I choose to write about (studying the animal, coming up with ideas etc.) so I'll be writing these little teasers so you know what to expect next. No need to save these teasers, I will delete them right after I'll drop the final post. Just know that for now-
Self care for house cats is next! 🐱 for pets or strays? what you'd prefer?
but I have to say that it may be delayed :( i'm really busy right now with real life. but it will be here!
1. Bone charm for a bag. Draw a pattern on paper or print a picture, cut out two pieces from white fabric, sew them together, turn them inside out, stuff, and sew on a loop.
2. Big leg (to hold in the mouth), designed by SidewalkStudios. Etsy link for the pattern.
3+4. Simple chicken leg (source)
5+6. Cookie cutter. Can be bought or made out of a tin can (youtube link)
For bears (mainly for brown bears and grizzlies, maybe may fit others aside from polar, it can be a future separate post, if you want)
Food:
Bears are quite easy to match food for. They eat foods such as fish, apples, pears, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, pumpkins, dried fruit such as golden raisins, lettuce & salad greens, potatoes, cauliflower, beet root, kohlrabi, leek, fennel, grapes, melon, plums, bananas, peaches, tangerines, berries (particularly strawberries), nuts (especially walnuts), almond butter, honey, and mushrooms.
Activities:
• Bears forage a lot, so go for walks often and patrol your territory.
• If you can, try gardening - growing various foods that bears eat (see above). The feeling of preparing your own food can bring species euphoria (and not only for bears, of course).
• Baking! While your baked goods are still warm, you can hide them (or ask someone to hide them) around your house, then try to find them using your nose. The aroma of baked goods is quite strong for a few minutes. Bears are able to detect food from 3-5 km away - why not try sniffing out a fresh cookie in your own house?
• Go camping!
• Read or watch stories about forests, mountains, survival.
General vibes:
In hot weather bears love to chill in water. Get a forest-themed bath bomb or pine concentrates for baths. To prepare the concentrate should be about 1 kg of pine needles pour 7-8 liters of water, then boil for thirty minutes and leave to infuse for 10 hours.
The same goes for the room, use forest-themed essential oils.
Search for forest sounds/webcams on Youtube. Let them be your background noise.
Get lots of plants, real or fake.
Draw/print pictures of various animals that are your home's neighbors.
Grow out your nails (or get fake nails) - bears got huge claws! Or buy these rings - I recommend, I got these too and they're really cool.
Wear clothes in the color of your species - a universal advice, easy and nice.
Physical exercise:
Weightlifting; working out the neck, shoulders, traps, and forearms
Yoga
Swimming
Climbing
There is also a literal Bear Crawl exercise (youtube link)
Hybernation!
Stock up! In the fall, buy your favorite foods, snacks, tea, honey. Try new varieties. Maybe those foods will become more expensive in winter (who knows?), so you’ll have gotten them cheaper too!
Make a den: blankets, pillows, lamps with warm light, perhaps candles or aroma lamps.
Plan only necessary trips to the grocery store for short-shelf-life foods; spend the rest of the time in comfort. Bears don’t get up unnecessarily during the cold season.
Go to sleep early and sleep longer. Allow yourself more rest during the day, and move slowly and consciously.
What do you think of ideas I came up with for bears? Add your own tips in reblogs!
Home decor for animals living in biomes with trees.
Transform an ordinary tin can into a cute tree-stump pencil holder! It’s simple, fun, and adds a cozy woodland vibe to your desk.
I made this one on the photo with a 200 ml can (there was corn in it) and printed the pattern.
Materials needed:
Empty tin can (like a beans or soup can)
Scissors
Ruler and measuring tape
Paper and markers (or a printer)
Clear tape
Glue
Steps:
1. Remove the can's lid completely so the can is open like a little vase. Make sure there are no sharp edges. Wash it and dry it off.
2. Measure the height of the can and the circumference (all the way around).
3. Create a rectangle using the measurements you took. Make it a full tree bark pattern (draw with markers or print it from computer) - this will wrap around your can.
4. Cover the paper with wide clear tape to make it more durable.
5. Cut the rectangle and carefully wrap the laminated paper around the can and secure it with tape or glue.
6. You can paint edges at the top and bottom brown, like I did, to hide the silver metal look.
It looks just like a simple tree stump!
Optional: if you have clay, you also can make roots so it looks more realistic!
The pencil holder is ready! Fill it with pens, pencils, or brushes and place it on your desk!
