a short selection of concepts and phrases that used to be commonplace in fandom and we’d really benefit from making that a thing again:

NOTP: the opposite of an OTP (One True Pairing). It is a ship a fan strongly dislikes. The word is a portmanteau of ‘no’ and ‘OTP’ and thus is not a contraction of any particular phrase.

Squick: anything that is a deep-seated, visceral turn-off. Squicks may be shared by many fans or be specific to one; one person’s kink may be another person’s squick.

YKINMKATO, or kink-tomato: Your Kink Is Not My Kink, And That’s Okay: used to indicate support for fannish diversity and to distinguish between disapproval or kink shaming and simply having different taste.

DLDR: Don’t Like, Don’t Read: a phrase used to warn against complaints about an aspect of fic or meta. A “live and let live” philosophy of fandom, which places the responsability for avoiding content one doesn’t want to see on the side of the fanwork consumer, rather that on the creator’s.

SALS: Ship And Let Ship: similar to the above specifically about shipping tastes.

YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary: a phrase used to acknowledge that any given individual’s personal opinion on the topic at hand may differ due to their own tastes, standards, values, experiences, etc.

CAP-IM Recs – Eat the Dead Dove: works that are unrepentantly dark

I salute @cap-ironman for today's theme!

When I first sampled the stevetony dead dove platter, I wasn't sure. Bit rich for my blood. I had previously read dark stuff in other fandoms. But I was very much into my Avengers Tower fic where everyone gets their happy ending, as I'm sure many of us prefered during lockdown.

These days, I find it cathartic.

Especially when it comes to comics canon, which – owing to the very medium – has a terrible habit of glossing over heinous actions, horrific trauma, and the bowing weight of canon events upon the sliding time scale. Trying to stuff all that canon into 15 years is crazy.

And so, I turn to fanwork that makes it so much worse (don't worry there are a couple of MCUs in there – I love a nasty lil MCU fanwork). Also features a very rare thing for me – Omegaverse recs.

Here's hoping you're not accessing this on a work or educational establishment device and that we're all adults here. I will add the occasional warning if the tags on the fic are not clear enough.

FYI: Most (all?) of these contain rape/non-con and/or consent issues.

The Devil's Groom by SomeA

This predates the dead dove term but it certainly counts. Iron Maniac and an evil version of Steve that isn't Hydra. They are obsessed with each other. Do take the tag of mentions of necrophilia seriously. What I like about this one, apart from the nastiness is how it casts disquiet in our 616 pair.

What You Have Tamed by tsukinofaerii

Semi mirror!verse fic. Tony gets pulled into another universe where Steve's side won Civil War, Tony died, and Steve took control of the government. By the time they get 616!Tony back, he's slightly broken and convinced that Steve owns him and can't make any decision without Steve. And gained the 'distressing' habit of offering his body to Steve and waking him up with blow jobs.

Another Steve has so thoroughly tortured Tony (plus got him to implant his own mind control chips) and regular Steve is having a Bad Time.

Just a lil comic about a Marvel Ultimates dystopia where Tony is very unwell and owns Steve as a sex slave. As wholesome as it gets on this list.

After the events of Superior Iron Man, Tony sells Extremis to the highest bidder and finds himself living as an expatriate in Russia. Steve's never been good at letting go.

I consider this a dead dove because of the extreme psychic damage it gives me every time I read it. I try bracing for it, it doesn't work. Exquisite work.

After being successfully reverted back to his normal moral self, Tony Stark is tasked with trying to prevent the next incursion in an entirely new way. One that requires magic, infiltration, and of course, his former best friend who wants nothing to do with him. Reluctantly together, Steve and Tony enter incursion planet Earth-6006. But the Earth-6006 they discover is a grotesque mirror of Earth-616, one that neither Steve, nor Tony may find themselves capable of escaping. In fact, they may just carry it back home with themselves.

I think this is the most extreme of all Superior Iron Man fics! Deeply troubling for Tony and Steve to have to witness THAT.

OMEGAVERSE CORNER

I'll save you my whole spiel, but essentially omegaverse is a full on horror trope to me, and so I only enjoy omegaverse fics that lean into that.

Tony, Steve tells him, like he is delivering news about a death, and the joke is on him. You're malnourished, he starts. You're. He falters. You're bondsick. No shit, Tony says. I can still feel you, Steve says, in his softest voice. Like he is terrified. Tony considers that in the space of a second before he's floating away again.

MCU, set at the very beginning of Endgame. When Tony and Nebula get back. Medical body horror / a bond failing / badwrong ending.

After the events at the bunker, Tony and Steve share a cell in the Raft. There's a price to pay in trying to survive.

Juicy MCU prison fic – with bonus Trish from Jessica Jones. Enduring a heat with the person you hate the most – because Ross wills it.

Fandom in Color - Sam Wilson

The Marvel universe, both in the comics and in the cinematic universe, has gone through multiple story arcs over its lifespan bringing in many heroes with many fantastic backstories. Today we are shouting out Samuel “Sam” Thomas Wilson for this Fandom In Color feature.

Sam started in the comics in 1969 as just a man who worked to train birds, who joined forces with Captain America to take on Red Skull, eventually evolving into the first iteration of the Falcon with his powers being his connection to the birds he is featured with like Redwing in the comics and his mechanical wings to fly. He was one of the first mainstream Black heroes, partnering with Captain America in many different iterations over the years and, eventually, in both the comics and the cinematic universe, taking up the historic mantle. Sam Wilson is one of the most popular and public faces of Captain America’s successors.

In Fandom spaces, Sam is featured often as the group therapist. Sam served in the United States Air Force as a pararescue team members and was a highly respected veteran working at the Washington D.C. V.A. hospital with other veterans to help their transition leaving the military. It was his invitation and companionship that he offered to Steve Rogers that created a bond over the men being in and surviving their military service. Due to this introduction, and his natural compassion brought out in his MCU appearances, lead many fans to headcannoning and writing these tropes with tags such as Sam is Everyone's Therapist, Up All Night To Get Bucky where Sam is featured alongside other Avengers to save Bucky, and even being placed as a matchmaker to fix up his friends found often in the tag Sam Wilson is a Good Bro. Continually, fans and writers alike have relied on Sam Wilson’s character as one to support and carry the team both with his abilities with advance strategies and levelheaded approach but also his emotional capacity with his continued empathy despite all that has happened to him. With his newest MCU feature, “Captain America: Brave New World” finally bringing Sam to stand as his own hero and getting his flowers to be the main protagonist.

Cheers for our newest Captain America and all he has done to earn the title, as his story progresses both in the comics and the MCU we will see more of our beloved Sam carrying the star-spangled shield with the dignity and hope that started with Steve Rogers for our future generations.

Man Made Sin (The Animal Within)

He’s not really sure he does have a choice in this—the werewolf has fangs that can rip his throat out and claws that would disembowel him without a second thought. Whatever it is that the werewolf wants with him, he’ll give it if it means he lives through this night.

Perhaps the werewolf picks up on this attitude somehow, because its head ducks down to lick at the fine trail of golden hairs below his belly button and Kiran can’t help but gasp, hips jolting up at the sensation, dreadful anticipation filling him.
