Math, Roman Style
It's a lot of math involved in governing ancient Rome. First you gotta subtract all these voter bribes from your coffers to get yourself a consulship, then rig the lots to multiply your chance of getting a sweet, sweet province like Macedonia. No sooner are you done adding up the loot you extorted from the provincials, then you gotta divide it among the jury prosecuting you for the crimes you 100% committed. And to make it all worse, you have to do it all in Roman numerals!
MMLXVI + DCCXIX = PAIN
But never fear! The Romans found ways to work with their wacky numbers. Pretty damn cool ways, too. I promise you don't need any math skills for this post.
I have to study for bio now oh no…What is the kreb cycle…

The One Where Octavian Gets Attacked by a Lemon
"In our defense, he almost dies all the time, anyway."
Salvidienus pinched the bridge of his nose to hide his mouth twitching up. Really, he wasn't surprised to find saboteurs in the garrison as the Parthian campaign neared. But he'd expected them to be armed with more than a butter knife and a lemon.
"Tell me who hired you, and I'll make your deaths painless. Also, explain how my best friend ended up in the medic tent covered in horseshit."
Hey, what was inaccurate about Domina? I want to watch it but I’m unsure on the characterizations
(oh this got quite long, sorry in advance-)
it's not that it's *super* inaccurate, it's just that (in my opinion) some of the choices made were a little, well. they could have been more interesting. guy who only ever thinks about agrippa all the time voice i am going to talk about agrippa first. i do love how they did agrippa but i also feel like his character was sort of flattened? like we see him for the most part as either a violent warmonger or then flip it entirely to this (i'm going to be mean here, but i don't care) pretty pathetic man who just kind of rolls over and does whatever gaius and livia want, and there's not really much nuance - no mention of the whole quote unquote 'exile' situation in 23, or negotiations with herod or parthia or anything like that.
(this is very much a personal thing, but the [spoilers] sort-of-but-not-really romance plot with him and livia definitely irked me. i think they did it well for what it was, but - they did come close, but when are they going to make a show where him and octavian are as insane about one another as they were historically? the emphasis on his relationship with livia over octavian lessens the effect of his death - and the whole death thing really did piss me off. they show his death, they show his funeral, they focus on how sad LIVIA is in that funeral shot (and not his, you know, childhood best friend other half of my soul etc etc) and then immediately cut to a sex scene with livia and gaius. yay. i haven't seen beyond this episode, so correct me if im wrong, but it kind of feels like people just... forget about him immediately? even gaius. there's not really a mourning or grief sort of thing. it's weird.)
That sex scene after Agrippa's death was literally the worst decision they could've ever made. If it was up to me, I don't think I could've ruined Agrippa's death scene that badly even if I was purposefully sabotaging the show. Agrippa had just died and it was really sad, and I was really sad, and Octavian was really sad, and suddenly they're just having sex and Livia says "you don't need him anymore"??? Is this what either of them would've done after Agrippa died?
When I watched that part, I was crying, but I swear that sex scene made my tears go back up where they came from. I just got zero empathy for the characters in that scene.

We’ve waited a year to reblog this. Happy Bread Anniversary!
Because it’s important to celebrate the little victories in life.
No, no, no!
This is April 19 on the Julian Calendar.
The real bread day is on April 7th
No, no, no!
First of all, April 19 (Julian Calendar) does NOT become April 7 (Gregorian Calendar). Right now, to convert dates from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar, you have to add 13 days, not subtract 12 days.
There are two separate ways to view bread day. You could view bread day as a specific event that happened in ancient Rome, or you could view bread day as a date on the calendar. That would affect how you calculate.
If you were to convert April 19 (Julian Calendar) into the Gregorian calendar, just as a date, you would have to add 13 to the Julian date to get the Gregorian date. So, bread day will be May 2. When 2100 rolls around, the Julian calendar would be 14 days behind the Gregorian calendar. Therefore, you’d have to add 14.
So, in a hundred years, bread day will be May 3. But right now, bread day is May 2.
However, what if you think of bread day as an event that happened roughly two thousand years ago?
Converting between the two calendars has to take into account what year the date is in. To get May 2, I assumed that bread day, March 19, is happening in 2023, and I’ve calculated accordingly.
However, if I assume that bread day happened in between 100 BC and AD 100, I would have to calculate to support that.
Fun fact: The thing abut the Gregorian calendar is that it was made to calculate Easter accurately. Easter has to come after the spring equinox.
In the First Council of Nicaea in AD 325, the spring equinox happened on March 21. But after a while, the spring equinox started coming before March 21. So the Gregorian calendar was made to shift the calendar so the spring equinox could come on March 21, just like in AD 325.
That means that the Gregorian calendar is simulating the Julian calendar during AD 325, rather than the Julian calendar in 45 BC, when the Julian calendar was made.
That means that to convert April 19th, assuming it happened before AD 200, into the Gregorian calendar, I will have to subtract, not add.
There is no doubt that bread day happened in between 100 BC and AD 100. Vesuvius went JKHDLKSKJHSK in AD 79, and do you really think graffiti from earlier than 100 BC would still exist in AD 79?
Bread day happened on April 19 (Julian calendar) between 100 BC and 100 AD. According to Wikipedia, that means I shall have to subtract 2 from the Julian date to get the Gregorian date.
19 - 2 = 17
The real real real bread day is on April 17.
(I also checked on a calendar conversion calculator, and yes, it agrees)
tl; dr: If you calculated April 19 from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian Calendar, and the year was in between 1900 and 2999, the Gregorian date would be May 2. If you converted April 19 from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar, and the year was in between 100 BC and AD 100, the Gregorian date would be April 17. Both May 2 and April 17 are good days to celebrate bread day, and I’d say April 19 is fine too. But you can not celebrate bread day on April 7, not in your lifetime.
