Ep. 15 - Prisoners is too bleak for your Wolverine jokes

Patrick Haynes from the Sorry, Internet podcast joins the podcast! We talk about Denis Villeneuve’s 2013 crime drama Prisoners. We gush about the Oscar-nominated cinematography from Roger Deakins, praise the underrated Gyllenhaal, and get into what keeps this film from reaching the level of a crime film like Zodiac.

“Prisoners” is the kind of movie that can quiet a room full of casual thrill-seekers. It absorbs and controls your attention with such assurance that you hold your breath for fear of distracting the people on screen, exhaling in relief or amazement at each new revelation.

But Keller lacks the right equipment to exact justice. The point of Prisonersis that there are some crises no one can plan for. Having a child abducted, and not knowing what’s become of him or her, is a devastating event that can redefine a person.

We meet a lot of creeps in “Prisoners”, and you get the sense that Detective Loki could have been one of them if he hadn’t become a cop. It’s a nice performance from Gyllenhaal, and its subtlety is welcome considering all the teeth gnashing going on in other performances.

The pledge of Nolan’s “The Prestige” is that the film, having been metaphorically sawed in two, will be restored; it fails when it cheats, as, for example, if the whole woman produced on the stage were not the same one so unfortunately cut in two. Other than that fundamental flaw, which leads to some impenetrable revelations toward the end, it’s quite a movie – atmospheric, obsessive, almost satanic.

Wingard: It took almost a year and a half to calm our minds down and figure out that we wanted to do something that was a departure, but that accumulated all of our interests in one film. Long story short, after You’re Next, we decided, “Let’s get our ultimate nostalgia movie out of our system, and pay our dues to the masters who really inspired us to become filmmakers to begin with.” That’s kind of the evolution of where we went.

The Dissolve’s 4-star review of The Guest

The questions hovering over The Guest—who is David, and what does he want?—are answered in good time, but Wingard (You’re Next) and his regular screenwriter, Simon Barrett, hold off as long as possible. There’s something empowering and true about David’s mission to protect and strengthen the Peterson clan, even if his methods are a little scary.

But the filmmakers are wise enough to keep building around Stevens, whose performance starts from a point of eerie, silver-tongued refinement, and steadily grows more sinister. He’s the slow-burning fuse on a fistful of dynamite.

Wingard and Barrett’s interview with Pop Matters

Barrett: I feel if we’d made our movies more serious they’d be somber and unenjoyable, I think we just like to bring a humor to our movies. We might make films in the future that are more serious, or we might make straight up comedies, but I feel people are so used to having movies marketed in such a straightforward manner that they don’t really know how to respond to a movie that does a lot of different things at once.

Wingard: That also comes from having more experience too, we’ve made quite a few movies and each time you learn more and more about the art of sound and filmmaking in general. It’s also about solidifying your team, we’ve discovered our sound designers Jeff Pitt and Andy Hays, are our dream team. We were watching The Guest the other day and I had this epiphany that this was the first time I was watching one of our movies were I never for a moment thought “I wished we’d done something different with the sound mix”, it just sounded exactly the way it was supposed to sound and that was an absolutely fantastic feeling to have.

Ep. 11 - When in Pan’s Labyrinth, there’s probably a tree

This week we’re joined for the first time by our good friend Monica Date, the world’s foremost nerd engineer costumer smart person, probably. Kayla sings and yells “CAAARRRLLL” a lot, Monica is blissfully ignorant of her Wolverine’s impending heartbreaking sportsball loss, and we have a lot of feelings about Guillermo Del Toro’s modern horror classic. We don’t use that phrase lightly.

Next week you’ll hear us talk about Del Toro’s latest, the gothic romance Crimson Peak. For now, though, we’ll settle for trashing all your favorite horror television.
