She knows they have one. His name is Lop. But she doesn't see him. She puts her dirty clothes on the floor next to her nightstand and then they're gone. She gets makeup on the mirror and rubs it off with her hand, leaving a smudge behind, and the next day the smudge is gone. Her father makes their dinner, but lunch and breakfast just appear on the table in perfectly symmetrical arrangements.
Mother says they have Lop instead of her sisters because the Parkinson estate that was given to her betrothed came with a lake and a garden, and so they don't employ cleaners and cooks like some of her friends.
Pansy continues not thinking about house elves until she's fourteen and suddenly Draco has one.
It's such a stupid idea, to take on sustaining a house elf at the age that most people barely have the magic to sustain themselves. But Draco can be stupid sometimes, and at the very least when they're at Hogwarts Winky can subsist of the ambient magic like the other castle elves.
Winky is there often, at Draco's elbow and in his rooms, and Lop had always kept to himself, but Winky doesn't, which is fine. It's not like Draco minds, and she's a polite little thing if nothing else.
Winky makes her own clothes.
She doesn't just wear pillowcases or crude togas or even shrunken versions of her master's discarded clothing, which is what most house elves wear.
Her clothes are complicated and cute and Draco even gifts her bolts of cloth so she can make exactly what she wants and Draco even talks about how she's made outfits for her friends.
Pansy loves to sew.
She makes clothes for her friends too.
The summer after fourth year, she wanders down to the kitchens. Lop appears with a pop. He almost looks startled to see her. If she wants something, she just calls for him. "What do you be needing, Young Mistress?"
"Do you like the lake?" she asks. "Is that what you used to take care of, before?"
Lop stares at her, his already large eyes going even wider.
Pansy refused to be the one to break the silence. She's nearly made up her mind to leave and pretend this never happened when he says, "No. I am meaning - yes, the lake is good. I had - once, I had an ocean."
An ocean?
"Which one?"
He smiles at her. "You is being young. There is only one ocean."
"Will you tell me about it?" she asks impulsively. "If you don't mind."
He snaps his fingers and a steaming mug of her favorite tea floats in front of her at the same time that a chair appears right behind her. "I am not minding. If you are wanting to know."
"I do," Pansy says, and she sits, and she listens.

Apparently a part of the reason why farmed bees stay in the beehives that humans build for them is because the farm hives are safer and sturdier. I don't know how a busy Discord server's worth of bugs that only have one brain cell each would logically conclude that the humans protect them from outside threats, illness and parasites, but if I understood right, the bees would be free to move away and build a new nest somewhere else any time they'd want, and they simply choose not to.
You know how in almost every culture, people have some concept of "if I sacrifice something that I made/grew/produced to the Gods, they will ward me and my harvest from evil"?
So, in a way, don't the bees willingly sacrifice a part of their harvest to an entity not only far greater than them, but nearly beyond their comprehension, in exchange for protection against natural forces wildly outside of their own control?
So tell me, beekeepers, what are you to your bees, if not a mildly eldritch God?
Imagine you’re a neolithic hunter-gatherer, just hanging out, sacrificing stuff to your god, when a new god you’ve never met before shows up and tells you that your god is dead, it’s not your fault or anything, and maybe a new god will come along to take care of you, maybe not, it’s gonna be touch and go for a while
Apparently in medieval Europe they also whispered secrets to the bees.
So imagine the mildly eldritch God you worship talks to you and tells you secrets, but these secrets make no sense to you and are incomprehensible to understand or even know they are secrets. But your God does make vibrations at you, so thats probably a good thing right??
Also occasionally the Swarm decides there is not enough room in the Hive because the eldritch god didn't take the offering of Honey at their normal time. So enough of a Swarm builds up that the second queen is able to leave without decimating the first Swarm. They are all set to search out a new place that will likely not have your God anymore (but really that's not too much of a struggle, they have abandoned you, that's part of why you've left, even though the first Swarm still holds out hope for their return).
And then, the scouts find another Hive right next to the old Hive. Literally right next to it. So the Queen lands to inspect it and wow, it's a good deal. The area already has enough food to support 2 Hives, so it's a not problem to stay in the area now that they have the space, but...this wasn't here before.
And then you see God, they've come to help the Swarm move to the new Hive and take the offering from the old Hive. Truly this must have been their plan all along
In English folklore, you ALSO have to invite your bees to your wedding, and decorate their hive, and leave a slice of cake for them, and also bring your new spouse by to introduce them to the hive straightaway. Imagine your eldritch god doing THAT.
And some actually had the gal to say he's not kind and he still carries it in his heart T.T

i recently started reading the uranii manga and i'm in love with uramichi!! i need someone to talk about it so i wanted to ask what do you like most about him?
Dear anon, the real question is what I don't like about him heh, but since you are giving me this chance to babble about him I'll take full advantage of it and answer you thoroughly.

1. We both work(ed) with kids
Working with children must be one of the most satisfying but taxing jobs in the world. The amount of energy -physical and emotional- you need to keep up with them and their antics is huge and since they are usually pretty sharp you also need to constantly check yourself and not let it slip when you are feeling down (not that Uramichi particularly cares about that tho, lmao).
I really like seeing him interact with them and that he actually cares and enjoys being with them (even when he's not feeling his best).
I especially love that he's always sincerely moved when the kids thank him for his hard work or tell him that they had fun during the show (when you work with children you usually get little to no appreciation so I know how important those words can be).
I also like that every time he's feeling down he just sits on the floor like this and the kids copy him while they listen to his complains lmao:
2. We both deal with anxiety in our daily lives
This one doesn't really need much explanation, but I do want to point out that seeing him try to push forward despite his anxiety and depression was (and still is) incredibly hopeful for me.
3. He's a kind person (even if he himself doesn't think so)
There are so many scenes in the manga where you can see this but one of my favorite ones is one from his college days where Usahara hurt himself while training and Uramichi was the only one who noticed it in their dorm, checked his injury and told him to go to the doctor.
Other than this, he's always patient with Iketeru sometimes I think Uramichi sees him as another kid or something lmao and he always listens to Utano when she needs someone to talk to.
He may not be aware of it -or he may have a hard time accepting it- but I think he's pretty important to his coworkers and that he's rather well-liked by everyone.
4. Lastly, I can't help but root for him
This one too is pretty self-explanatory. I've been where he is (I still am) so I just want him be happy, he definitely deserves it.
