awawawa Thank you <3. The goober ratio correlates with my mood and I'm glad it's enjoyed haha. Also I purposefully started making them cuter/cartoonier recently so you have given me the perfect opportunity to share those notes whoops;

I needed to be able to meme them quicker so I made a guide ww. Transcription/elaboration under the cut

The inspo overall for me finally doing this was that I wanted to experiment with something I used to do if I knew I'd draw a character a lot, which was simplify their design down to things I could easily remember. Admittedly THAT thought came from me wanting to emulate one of my old inspirational artists I followed on Deviantart as a kid, Aisha Thani. I read Warrior U as a kid, but realized I could draw characters in whatever style I wanted from their Xiaolin Showdown comics/ fanart. Truly fed into my need to meme, I needed to get back to that.

For reference this doodle page started because I wanted to draw Jamil trying to Cask of Amontillado Kalim. (This is an extended bit). Because I knew I was about to fall into a hole of doing small, silly doodles, I needed to not have to think too much or keep having to grab references. I want to start having more non-committal fun with my art and it's more conducive to that to Just Draw. I just also want them to be recognizable, haha.

Most of these I actually was already mulling on doing, but it was nice to actually pin them as on purpose. Even in my more detailed style, you may notice I was implementing some fo these, haha

Kalim:

Very distinct outer silhouette

Round organics (hair fluffier)

VERY sharp clothing and accessories. If a rounded object, still should feel "stiff" in comparison [points towards a sketch of his earrings as an example]

Big movements

Somewhat stock posed, however?

Classic, common animated poses

Bolder, thicker [eyelashes]; filled pupil The principles I employed for Kalim overall (which I realized as I was making notes on what I was drawing and then leaned into) was that he works like a classic cartoon/comic character, primarily ones on television between the 40s and the 70s. Mickey Mouse cartoons of course, but Looney Tunes and lesser known counterparts as well. The idea is that he has BIGGER emotions and expressions, but over time you start noticing that they're the same ones and commonly seen/approved. I thought having that limitation spoke to him having to overall represent his family and stay within honored tradition, while also maintaining his Kalim-isms. I actually noticed they do this for him in the manga! As much as they call on other character's sprites, I noticed Kalim especially tended to go back between the same few gestures per emotion. I maintain I've only read volume 1 and gotten other things via guess and some osmosis, so I don't know if that changes, but I think having his design rely on fluidity but he be stuck in the same, pre-approved body language would get the duality across well. It's also why his body is more fluid in shape but all of his clothing and jewelry are built around sharp angles. His silhouette has to be always and immediately decorated and recognizable, but it must also always be "in line".

Jamil:

Jamil is more "angular", but his organic features aren't pointed.

PURPOSEFULLY [has] obscured details in [his] silhouette

Compared to Kalim, he is long (narrow ovals)

Hair [bang and pony tail] always points towards itself.

Minimize silhouette; readable but simple.

Angles and sudden cutoffs

Thin, embellished, fine [eyelashes]; open pupils

Jamil lives on ~presence;

Doesn't need much to say a lot

Expressive, but in a "less is more" way on avereage

Much more reserved, stock keikaku when keikakuing

Varied when surprised/off-guard

Similar to Kalim, I realized what style I was falling into post doing the initial sketches. Where Kalim is meant to invoke cartoons from the 40s-70s, Jamil started to lean more late 90s/2000s. This ends up working out and probably happened because those styles are more graphic/defined, but also perceived as more "mature". Very specifically I think he falls into some of the ones people consider obscure/overlooked haha (Kitty Bobo, Daria, Fillmore). His organic parts are very on purpose narrow but not sharp. I don't know how to describe why that feels more correct.

Jamil falls more on a silhouette that you can see the shape of but can't exactly imply details on. He makes an overall simple shape on the outside, his front being being the big indicator for individual marker. Since that bang always points towards his ponytail, it creates a kind of ouroboros. You can see a little, but not all of it. I also simplified his jewelry but that was straight up to match everything else. I DID make his hair also go in defined, pointed sections though. I find it to be a place he seems to express himself most. This refl;ects in his sprite as well! His inner details are more "fine" than Kalims; they're all much less extreme and a lot more threaded. (eyelashes, for example). That said, he has a lot of sudden cuts from Big to Small shapes as well (ie I tend to grab big clothing he wears and cut it very suddenly when it hits skin).

Expressions and body language wise Jamil runs on presence. He does not talk as much or as loudly as Kalim, he expresses more "small" but those expressions are much more varied in actual drawing-- he may be expressing exhaustion or exasperation constantly, but he's doing so in slightly different ways every time. He does not need to do much to get a lot across. Again, contrast with Kalim, who makes big gestures but they're always the same ones. Jamil does similar when he's trying to be sly or coy ("keikauing"). It's part of him knowing what body language and expressions read to people a specific way. He has a playbook for that. A final note is that I actually find keeping the little diamond hair sparkles important for twst fanart, but I am probably gonna shorthand them to plus signs/crosses instead of full out diamonds, haha I am also starting to work on these kind of simple designs for other characters, since my love for all of them has grown 10 fold. There is nto a character in this game I am not incredibly fond of. There's just rotating tiers. Sorry if too much of a yap, I just. HAD to grab at the chance to say something ;v;.
