This is fascinating when you consider that most of the fires Lucanis "pulled Illario out of" were fires that he, in fact, started.

The Wigmaker Job went as sideways as it did because Lucanis made a last-minute call that introduced more danger, more chaos, and more violence than was necessary to get the job done. The whole time, Illario was trying and failing to get him back in line. Illario is always composed, always gets his part of the job done, and never once actually lets Lucanis down.

He's a good assassin. He just isn't a wildcard in the same way Lucanis is. He likes to play it safe. He has style, but his kills lack Lucanis' flair.

And for that, Lucanis looks down on him. Maybe doesn't really see him as lesser, but treats him lesser all the same.

He's lucky Illario didn't snap sooner.

Illario Dellamorte is such a joy to play. He radiates charisma and unbridled self-esteem, at least on the surface. But what makes him compelling is that he’s beautifully flawed. That hunger for attention? It doesn’t come from arrogance. It comes from fear. The fear of not being chosen. I relate to that more than people might expect. I was a late bloomer. I felt like the black sheep culturally, physically, mentally. That quiet yearning to belong… to be recognized… to matter. For Illario, that wound goes all the way back to Caterina. Lucanis was always the favored one. No matter what Illario does, it never quite feels like enough. And when you grow up in someone else’s shadow, you learn two things: How to sharpen yourself. And how to demand the spotlight.
