Use rags instead of paper towels & tissues — This one is obvious. There’s nothing a paper towel or tissue can do that a rag can’t. When you’re done with your rag just throw it in the laundry bin. I make my rags out of old clothing that is too stained/ripped to be donated.
Brew your own Coffee — The average American spends $1000 annually on coffee from cafes. You don’t need an expensive coffee maker to brew delicious coffee. Portable travel mugs are awesome, they don’t spill, they hold more coffee than most disposable mugs and they save the environment by cutting down on waste. Be sure to use a reusable coffee filter as well.
Use a Menstrual cup instead of Tampons/Pads — The average woman spends $135–250 a year on disposable tampons/pads. She will fill up landfills with around 125–150kg of tampons, pads, and applicators. Menstrual cup prices range from $15–40. They are also not known to cause toxic shock syndrome, dryness, irritation, and have no harmful chemicals that cause hormone imbalances. So not only are menstrual cups cheaper, but they are healthier for you and the environment.
The Lena cup is really great if you have a heavy flow. The cup creates a seal that prevents leaks. You only have to empty out and clean the cup 2–3 times a day.
Use reusable trash bags — I love my reusable trash bags. They’re inexpensive and save me around $200 a year. They fit better than the disposable ones in my trash bin. I rinse out cans and anything gross I wrap inside plastic packaging. If you have a lot of gross/wet trash keep the disposable bags in a bin in the garage and keep the reusable one in the kitchen.
Listen to Audiobooks — Why sacrifice trees when there are millions of audiobooks available online. Audible is the best audiobook service. With the free trial, you get to listen to 2 audiobooks for free. I usually play video games while listening.
Cloth Diapers — Disposable diapers are getting more expensive because the cost of wood pulp used to make them has risen due to deforestation laws. Why kill forests when you can just diaper your baby with machine washable diapers? This is what humans did for hundreds of years before disposable diapers were invented. Some brands like the popular mama koala grow with your baby. Reddit’s r/clothdiaps is an excellent source for all things cloth diapering if you want to learn more.
Cloth diapers can come in a lot of different, fun patterns.
Using a Bidet instead of Toliet Paper — These are very popular in Europe. American toilet paper usage is wiping out Canadian forests since most of our toilet paper comes from old Borean Forests. A bidet will clean you way better than toilet paper ever can. Who doesn’t want a sparkly clean bum?
Dry clothing on a clothing rack instead of using your dryer — I always have something drying on my rack. When I had an in-unit washer/dryer, the dryer was a huge electricity hog even though it’s only a few years old and is supposed to be “energy efficient”. My clothing dries just as well on the rack. In fact, drying your clothes here makes them last longer because the heat from the dryer damages your clothing by causing it to shrink. The only times I use the dryer is for jeans and towels (so like, once a month).
If you must use your dryer at least use dryer balls — they are an amazing invention. Dryer balls work as well as fabric softeners without all the awful scents and waxy chemicals and they help clothes dry faster on low heat.
If you have the space set up a clothing line — The wind will dry your clothes faster outside on a line. Just tie the line between 2 trees or 2 poles. A clothing line is only about $5 and clothes pins vary from $3–10depending on how many and what type of wood they’re made out of.

Make your own laundry detergent — You can make a year supply for $30. Not only is it cheap, but it also doesn’t contain harmful fragrances that can disrupt your hormones. All you need are 3 bars of Fels Naptha laundry soap, 76oz of Borax, 55oz of box washing soda, 2 cups of baking soda and 110oz of oxi clean. Break down the laundry soap by grating it with a cheese grater until its a powder then mix the other ingredients together and store in a container. You only need to use 2 tablespoons per standard load.
Wear Leather shoes instead of plastic — Animals will die for our products no matter what they’re made out of. Since plastic pollutes the environment and is literally killing millions of sealife leather is looking like the least-cruel option. Plastic shoes need to be replaced every few months to a year because they are designed to wear out so you buy a new pair. Landfills are full of old plastic shoes, leather shoes are made to last and they can be repaired. I’ve had my pair of leather shoes for 5 years without any noticeable wear and tear.
Rent movies and video games at your local library — If you return them on time there’s no fee. Support your local library!
Shop and donate to the thrift shop when you can — I found my leather shoes at the thrift shop for $20. In the store, they would’ve cost over $200. Products that someone can find use out of do not need to end up at the landfill. In the US you get a tax deduction for your donations.
Almost everything I’m going to list below can be bought off of Amazon. With Amazon Prime you get free 2-day shipping. Luckily, Amazon offers a free trial for Prime if you really want something off of this list but don’t want to pay for Prime. I highly recommend using Amazon because a lot of these items are really hard to find in stores.

Each tree has its own magical energy. The Pine tree is associated with blessings, fertility, grounding, longevity, wisdom, the planet Mars, the elements earth and fire, and the deities Cernunnos & Attis . The word "pine" derives from the Latin pinus which in turn comes from the Proto Indo European root *pīt, meaning "resin", hinting at its ancient use.
Pine cones represent masculinity (even though they are essentially the womb of the tree) and fertility and may be used to tip wands and staves. They are used in midwinter or yule decor, as are pine branches, wreaths and entire pine trees.
A pine branch hung over the door will invite joyful energy inside and a pine branch hung over a bed will ward against illness.
Burning pine needles and pine cones encourages good health
Pine needles can be used for banishment, exorcism, purification.
You can use a pine branch like a broom to brush away negative energy from your home or from surfaces (like your altar) and objects.
Use pine oil in your wash water to wash away troubles that have been disturbing your household, including illness or just general doldrums.
Meditate under a pine tree or walk through a pine forest to get a new perspective on a situation and emerge with a renewed sense of purpose.
