College 101: Ask, Don't Tell

This advice is yet again brought to you by things my students do, to my ongoing bewilderment and frustration. Twice in a single day this week, I had students inform me (sic) that they will be (sic) submitting work that is 1-2 weeks late... in a course that only runs for 5 weeks. There is a clear late work policy in the syllabus. Strangely enough, this policy is not "do whatever, it's fine!"

Here's the thing: I'm happy to offer emergency extensions. Like many of my colleagues, I'm also perfectly happy to offer non-emergency extensions, as long as they're requested in advance. If students are managing their time well enough to ask for an extension before the deadline, I will distribute extensions like Oprah distributing cars. But surfacing from a period of non-submission of work to inform your professor -- who is probably managing a minimum of 100 students across their courses -- that you will be submitting late work, because fuck their rules and fuck their workload... this is not likely to win their goodwill.

I genuinely think this is part of it. I get a lot of emails which seem to be trying either to upbraid me for poor performance or to "manage up" and... that's just not the relationship I have with my students. I'm not their manager. Still less are they mine. One of this week's resurfacing students sent a response to my email saying that what he actually needed was for all the assignments in a 10-day period to be reopened. I did not, in my reply, point out that I am not an employee who had failed to submit a deliverable by EOD.

I do think "literally zero evidence indicates that gatekeeping medical transition does anything to prevent regret, but the harm done by gatekeeping is extensively documented" is a much stronger argument than "regret isn't real" cause there's always going to be some anecdote that puts you in a weak-looking rhetorical position for the latter, but the former is pretty unassailable.

After much struggle, I finally got a good picture of my pride quilt!!! The quilt top is an 86-inch (218 cm) square.

I really love how the quilt top came together! I didn't have a solid vision about which blocks I would use to complete this project. The binding fabric is going to the same batik used to frame out the LeMoyne Star blocks in each corner.

The majority of the border is made up of 12 inch Friendship Star blocks. I really fell in love with the Friendship Star block and will definitely use it again!

I will definitely be longarm quilting this project and just need to schedule a time to quilt it.

So I do 3D modeling and printing as a hobby, and a few weeks ago I designed wheel guards meant to prevent office chairs from running over cables and clothes... or your pet's tail.

I got the idea from cowcatchers old locomotives used to have.

Anyways, yesterday I uploaded the model to Thingiverse, and just hours after uploading it, the Community Relationship Manager of the whole website left a comment suggesting I enter the model into a competition that's currently being held on the site.

So I did... and now it's in third place not even a day later. First place is $500, but the competition still has a month to go.

Then the Community Manager contacted me again, telling me they want to feature my model in an upcoming design promotion.

Just, what is happening? I mostly made this thing for myself in, like, an hour, and now it's suddenly super popular? This is all a little bit overwhelming 😵‍💫

Other models I worked on for weeks didn't get nearly as popular. I swear, it's impossible to predict what people will like.
