When is the last time you said that to someone else? We need to advocate for each other more often. That in itself is a great reason to embrace “mentoring.” It’s unfortunate that the term “mentor” has become vague, complicated, and even overwhelming, when really it just means a friend equally loyal to your character and cause. A mentor is the kind of friend who highlights the hidden gifts that others (even you) downplay and finds little opportunities to let you shine. This kind of friend is willing to be taught by you, because they know that listening is MiracleGrow for an idea-seed. This kind of friend never lets you quit for the wrong reasons, and doesn’t let you become a workaholic for the right reasons. You can be this kind of friend. In fact, you probably already are this friend for somebody. If you had to pick someone in your life right now to mentor, who is it? Consider building that connection. Who are you already pouring into? Consider pressing into that connection. The investment will be worth it! Trust me on this one. There’s one thing you absolutely must keep in mind: a mentor invests in the whole person. Mentoring a skill just because the person has potential to produce something great may be business savvy, but it’s a thin investment in the long run. So don’t let someone rope you into being their mentor if that’s all they want from you. They deserve better than that. You can be a better friend to them than they’ve been taught to expect. But good gracious, little mentor, relax! Intentionally is not a synonym for perfection, so don’t hop on that roller coaster of fear. Just kick your friendship up a notch. Take notes on your mentee’s dreams. Spot them bench pressing crazy ideas. Invest in their art.
