Frankenstein at Selfridges, 2025

Reader, I saw it again. So here is a tiny selection of just a few of my favourite details from the the exhibition at Selfridges.

Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein is about forgiving the person who brought you into this world without your permission when you do not want to be alive, and about forgiving yourself for being alive and accepting your life free of guilt and that is genuinely the most beautiful, validating thing I have ever seen in a film.

I never like it when adaptations don't portray Victor Frankenstein as a college student. I think there's a very particular type of mental state that you can only get from being a sleep-deprived, overworked college student that makes Frankenstein make sense. Grave-robbing? Stitching together a giant monster? Performing questionable experiments? Avoiding his problems by constantly fainting? Yeah, I probably did some stuff like that last semester, I don't remember

frankenstein (2025) is a movie about the cycle of violence and the inevitability of violence and about the miracle of being kind. it is a beautiful and touching adaptation that takes a unique view of some of the story’s focal points while staying true to the novel’s themes. it is also a movie that aims to remind us that the original creature textually had long flowing locks, for which I think we should all be thanking del toro specifically

I got to see Frankenstein by Guillermo Del Toro in the theater and it was amazing.

It was truly one of the most beautiful movies I have ever watched. Every element was gorgeous. The sets, the clothes, the character design, the props, the architecture, the monster design, the colors, the lighting, EVERYTHING.

I will try to keep this spoiler free but it is based on a book that was published 200 years ago.

I was stunned by the beauty of the carved medical figurines throughout the movie. The small ones like the pregnant woman and the recycling woman on the cane looked to be bone or ivory while the larger figures were marble (or made to look like marble). They had such warmth and grace. Every statue seemed poised at the brink of movement. I didn't even realize that the one figure bent over on the table was not another statue but a cadaver.

The sets were so rich and felt real. It felt, not exactly lived in because they were rich and it was very open and vacant, but it felt used. Worn. So often we see sets in period pieces where nothing is tattered and old but they leaned into it for this movie. They reused pieces of furniture, like you would if you moved. You would take your couch. Even if your couch was a little old and torn up. It also built upon the once affluent but now struggling backstory of Frankenstein.

I do have to say, the giant hole in the floor of the tower gave me intense anxiety. The moment I saw it, I was like, nope. I wouldn't even go in that room. It was so scary.

I watched this wearing a hoodie and pants in a theater that was a normal cold theater temp but the amount of snow and ice and the cold of the arctic made me shiver through most of the movie. I was unreasonably cold while watching.

Also, Elizabeth, gurl. I get it. I too would pick the sweet loving giant over either Frankenstein brother.

I have never thought Jacob Elordi was attractive but cut him up and give him the most tragic backstory of all time? Hell yes.

No spoilers. I cried. I laughed. I gasped. I drank three big glasses of sweet tea and still wouldn't leave before the end of credits even though I was in serious pain. It was nearly 3 hours long when you include the trailers.

Guillermo Del Toro is a genius. And also deeply, truly understands the appeal of fucking monsters.

I went on an action movie spree. I started with My Spy (seen it before) and followed that up with My Spy: The Eternal City (wasn't as good as the original but entertaining enough).

I then watched Heads of State and it was exactly what it should be. It was a fun and funny buddy action movie. That's all it needed to be and it was pretty solid.

Then I made the mistake of watching A Working Man and look, I love a good Jason Statham ass kicking movie. I've even watched Crank 1 & 2. When I tell you this movie was TERRIBLE, I am not exaggerating.

There was a moment, when Jason Statham (because who knows what the character's actual name was) goes to the most generic Pinterest pop version of a biker bar and I was going to forgive it when he walked in the back and a man in full leather was sitting on a Game of Thrones style throne OF BIKE MUFFLERS/TAIL PIPES. There were also these huge arches of skulls decorating the walls and neon lighting.

I literally shouted, in my empty house, at like 2 in the morning, at my TV "what the fuck is this?"

I swear that I have seen actual people and left the house this week. I even went to the gym! I don't know how I'm making it through so many TV shows.

While working on a Halloween costume we put on X-men 97 (I was not paying attention but I watched a little bit) and then we turned on Batman the animated series because my friend had never seen it. I LOVED this series. I have it on DVD back at my mom's house. We put it on and holy crap, I forgot how truly good it was. Also, all the "bad guys" were forced to be bad because of evil millionaires and pharma companies and corrupt politicians. Also, the animation was stunning. X-men 97 looked like shit in comparison.

I finished the K-drama Secret Royal Inspector and Joy. No crying during this one. Well, maybe once. The bad guys were very bad and kept getting away with it. Deep, deep political corruption, strong commentary on the historic oppression of women and children, condemnation of slavery and social classes, and a lot about marriage and illegitimate children. I think I wanted to see more of the crown prince (the series dead good guy) and a little bit more of why the country was in the state it was in (stupid lazy king, lost a war with Qing, ostracized repatriated hostages).

Overall, the mood was kept light and silly (sometimes almost too silly, like, lots of fake ghosts). There were some supernatural elements in this that were pretty consistent and could be seen as real or just a coincidence. The bad guys really did get what was coming to them. I liked that. It did feel very deserved.

Secret Royal Inspector, Yi-eon, listened to the main girl, Jo-yi, almost from the start. She had good ideas and plans and he just was like, yeah, that sounds great. Let's do it.

The cast was pretty large but I do think we got to know most of the characters well. They were each able to keep their unique traits throughout the story (Yi-eon was a great cook, Jo-yi was shockingly strong, etc). I have watched quite a few K-dramas where they start off with cute, independent personality quirks and then the writers seem to totally forget about it until maybe the end of the series (looking at you, Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung. What happened to the prince's love of writing romance novels?!).

I made sweet potato and black bean burritos and then a peach cobbler while watching this tonight. It was lovely.
