Feb 10: Favorite DELENA Tension Moment - 3x19 Heart Of Darkness
[This has got to be myfavorite Delena scene of all times so far and I chose it for Favorite Tension Moment because it was so intense that you could actual feel it yourself only by watching a screen. It was a beautiful, brilliantly directed and played scene and everything fitted perfectly: the music, the lightning, the focus, everything.]
At this point, Elena knows she loves Damon. -We only found out in 6x02, when she admitted to herself and to Alaric the moment she knew she loved him. This is why it's so much easier to reanalyze this scene now, because we are able to get more insight into Elena's real feelings.
She is in love with him and this is her greatest inner struggle, because she cannot admit it openly to anyone, not even to herself. She doesn’t want to accept it. She's supposed to love Stefan. Damon is not the better man. Damon made a lot of mistakes. Damon is Stefan’s brother. But somehow, she loves him, because she's seen he good in him, more than anyone ever has.
As she's trying to fall asleep in that dark motel room, she notices Damon at the table, pouring himself some bourbon in a plastic can, his shirt unbuttoned. He’s going to stay up all night to make sure Elena and Jeremy are safe. And as soon as she realizes this, she can no longer keep her eyes off him. She devours him with her eyes. She is in awe of him. She knows he is sexy, she knows he is good inside, she knows she is attracted to him and she can barely hide it.
When Damon notices that gazing look, he comes next to her in bed. “Why don’t you let people see the good in you?” she asks, with wondering eyes. She realizes how amazing Damon is and this realization creates so much struggle and turmoil in her heart. " Because when people see good, they expect good. And I don't wanna have live up to anyone's expectations." Damon says this not only for himself, but also for her and she understands it. Elena expected good from him and he felt under pressure. But other people also expected good from her and she didn’t want to have to live up to those expectations.
She knows what Damon means. But she can’t reply. This is when the tension increases abruptly. She has so many mixed emotions and she can’t hold them any longer. She turns away and takes deep, loud breaths. Her chest raises repeatedly.
Damon is puzzled, but he begins to touch her hand softly. This is it. The music starts. She breathes heavily and look at him. One more deep breath. She gets up and goes outside. She needs air. The tension is suffocating. Her feelings are suffocating her, so she gets out and she leans against the vending machine.
But Damon comes after her and he approaches her. She hears him, but she doesn’t turn to face him. “Don’t”. “Why not? Elena?” One more deep breath. This is it. Screw it. I’m doing this.
She turns and she kisses him with all the passion that had boiled inside her for so long. The passion that she held in so fiercely. The music reaches the climaxing chorus.
Their kissing moment needs no further comment. It was so beautiful and passionate and the fact the Jeremy cockblocked them was not frustrating, because Elena’s face aftwards proved that she was happy. She might not have made her final decision, but she gave in to her feelings for Damon. For a moment there, she stopped caring about anyone’s expectations. And it felt amazing.
