Is Religion really helpful ?

I recently watched a video link that was sent to me by a religious acquaintance of mine who was criticizing Christopher Hitches for being a bigot and a heretic . I decided to ignore him, as usual, and do my own research on this matter. What i found out not only increased my faith and belief in athiesm  but also about the horrific ideas and wrongdoings of religion as a whole and that got me thinking, "Is belief in a Religion ever going to help anyone?". What I found in my quest for the answer of the above mentioned question is the very basic truth that religion is the greatest dividing force we have ever known . Religion as i found out has actively turned basics morality into mandatory rules and some religion even advocate violence against homosexuals, apostates and adultery. I could not bring myself to understand how this horrifying text can be considered holy and religious. Does religion not preach sanctity of life ? Then why are you to stone an adulterer to death ? Does religion not preach love? Then why kill homosexuals for loving someone that they want? To treat all lives equally but women are inferior than men? These beliefs don't portray any morality just plain and utter stupidity. The only conclusion i could draw from all the arguments that i researched was the simple truth that religion poisons the basic thinking of human beings. While i am thankful for majority of the people are guided by thier compassion and moral compass i am extremely annoyed that they term it as a teaching of thier religion. While i cant deny the many religious texts teach us great values and great stories then why are they not treated as what they are, that is a simple work of fiction. I dont think any religious script has any more divinity than my class textbooks or The Chronicles of Narnia, though atleast my class textbooks dont advertise violence and radical extremists ideology. The most brutal horrifying wars, all have been waged in the name of religion where millions of people died because they refused others the freedom to conform their own thoughts and their freedom to exercise their will to do what they wanted. If this idea of a totalitarian dictator, who aparently is immortal, seems ok to you then in my humble opinion you have no right to pity the people of North Korea and speak against their dictator as you yourself are governed by one.

I just urge everyone to really read the holy scriptures and come to your conclusion about god but dont force you ideology on others. Others have the same freedom as you do and you have no right nor authority to question other people's belief and idea and change them unless you are ready for a similar change. Unite in the name of Humanity and let go of these ideology of centuries long past. Religion was a myth mankind created to push us through the dark ages, if we are to develop and rise above the dark ages then let go of the manacles of the myths that hold you and your progress back. Science is salvation and anyone who thinks otherwise is welcome to pray the diseases away. I am sure God will answer your prayer and if not, we'll he does work in mysterious ways. Just once in your life use logic and try to help yourself instead of relying on an invisible dictators and you will conquer all your problems and come so far that one day you will laugh at the notion of believing in something so trivial, because here is a little truth, that if an almighty God does exists, then by the state of things throughout history and in the present he doesn't seem to give a rat's ass about his most beautiful creation. If in the end you are going to have to help yourself anyway, why not do that in the first place and stop believing in the power of miracles? Ask yourself rationally that through the toughest times in your lives has God helped you even once or you have helped yourself thinking that it's the will of God? I leave you to your own thoughts, unlike God I force no one to love my writings and ideas.
