can we talk about how smart lister is to be able to teach himself to read in a different format and it’s WITH HIS NOSE?
cuz let’s be real, there’s no way cat sat down and taught him.
Good point. :)
There are so many instances of Lister displaying cleverness - for example, in "Kryten" he's memorised the Esperanto Rimmer still can't remember. Obviously it's due to hearing Rimmer play it over and over but still, it's an example of him picking up something Rimmer's struggling with.
The only reason Lister hasn't passed some kind of exam to overtake Rimmer is because he can't bring himself to care enough. (Well, that and the fact he knows it would absolutely destroy Rimmer and he doesn't want to have to deal with that.)
I think this part of the exchange between Lister and The Inquisitor-Lister says it all about Lister's character:
Inquisitor-Lister: You know what you coulda made of y'life if you'd tried. What you could've become.
Lister: So?
Inquisitor-Lister: You've got brains, man. Brains you've never used.
Lister: So?
He knows he could've been something "more" and he absolutely doesn't care since it's not what he values in life.
