'Man of the Hole': Last of his tribe dies in Brazil

The last member of an uncontacted indigenous group in Brazil had lived in total isolation for decades.

The Man of the Hole was the sole survivor of an Indigenous tribe that was genocided by Brazilian settlers in the 1970s, the other survivors of his tribe were killed by illegal miners in 1996 leaving him the last of his people. From that point on he lived in complete isolation for over two decades. He survived by hunting and gathering and moving around frequently, he left a deep hole in each of his homes for unknown purposes, hence the title that was given to him. It remains completely unknown who his people were, what language they spoke or what his name was.

His story is similar to that of Ishi an Indigenous man whose people were entirely exterminated during the california genocide, he lived in isolation for decades and no one knew his real name. And with him dying so did his people.

The story of the Man of the Hole brings to the forefront the ongoing genocide of the Indigenous peoples of Brazil. And the many perils they face.

If you see a member of a minority class fighting a violation of their civil rights and you decide to throw yourself, uninvited, into the disagreement on the side of the person violating their civil rights, you are officially one of life’s villains and I hope you fall off a cliff.

I’ve been forced into making the ADA violations into a problem for the city here. Months ago when I asked them to correct some minor issues I was ignored, I thought. Turned out that they were trying to fix several issues and pointing out that it wasn’t an issue in many places. They only responded after they thought they fixed a few of the violations, saying that everything that I mentioned is not a violation and yet I was able to send them numerous pictures after they told me they were within code.

Here are a few.

I have begun to document and make the city aware of these issues.

These are serious problems for those of us with mobility issues. It happens nearly everyday of my life.

Disabled parking spots need to have an access aisle (that striped area next to the spot plus a safe accessible path from the parking spot to the store) so disabled people can unload their wheelchair or other mobility equipment, deploy their wheelchair ramp, etc. and then safely get from there to the building. It’s required by law. Without the access aisle it’s not a disabled parking spot no matter what sign or pretty picture you put on it.

In photo one not only is there no access aisle for the right hand space, there’s a fucking giant column next to it making it less accessible than a standard parking space. An abled person would have to squeeze between that column and their car bumper to get out of that space. A disabled person would be fucked.

In photo two and three there’s no access aisle and there’s a high curb next to the driver’s side again making this less accessible than a standard space where an ambulatory disabled person might at least have the space between two parked cars to work with. Imagine you have shit balance or use crutches or a cane or have a prosthetic and now you have to walk a curb like a fucking balance beam to get into your car. Gee how could that possibly go wrong. 🤡

In photo four there are no disabled spots at all. There is a striped area that apparently is supposed to be the access aisle i.e., the way to get to the sidewalk and the shops. But there’s no curb cut. I guess we’re supposed to levitate?
