Whatever you think of the music Imagine Dragons are exmormon and the lead singer is a huge donor to LGBT groups in Utah. His like sole political cause is like fighting the astronomically high lgbt youth suicide here in Utah. I fucking hate this webbed site
1. i don’t like Imagine Dragons’ music and i think it is arguable that much of it’s a commercial product, but their members are, as stated above, more or less ex-Mormon.
the lead singer, Dan Reynolds, has discussed his active struggle with his faith and the cult of Mormonism. leaving a cult--especially one that practices shunning--is extremely difficult and can take years. and yet, despite this, he’s made it his mission to help combat issues affecting the LGBT+ community, including conversion therapy, LGBT+ youth suicide, and LGBT+ homelessness.
he has been a consistent and active ally to the point that he has an annual music festival called Loveloud that is dedicated to raising awareness about LGBT+ issues, featuring and promoting LGBT+ artists, and raising money for several charities. he has also donated his own money to LGBT+ organizations and gave his $1 million childhood home to Encircle, an LGBT+ advocacy group in Utah.
the guitarist, Wayne Sermon, has also given talks at conferences dedicated to assisting Mormons in leaving the cult and healing from their trauma.
2. the Lumineers have a history of holding shows solely so they can donate all profits to various charities and causes, including Planned Parenthood in Texas after Republican efforts to defund PP, Dakota Access Pipeline protestors, and LGBT+ charities in North Carolina following the passing of anti-LGBT+ legislation. a lot of their music that doesn’t make it to the radio focuses on issues like poverty, the working class, addiction, and trauma.
3. Marcus Mumford has explicitly stated that he doesn’t actually identify as a Christian, despite using Christian imagery in some of his songs. a person’s parents being Evangelical conservatives should not be an indictment on them. he and the other band members also kicked out their guitarist when he started spewing alt-right talking points and supporting Andy Ngo. i’m still not totally sure i trust his politics--he strikes me as pretty centrist--but good lord, he’s not an Evangelical.
do y’all not realize that you’re allowed to dislike music for purely surface level reasons? like that it doesn’t have to be that it’s made by terrible people--you can just seriously not like how it sounds?
making up bullshit theories where you falsely charge people--especially people actively fighting for progress--with being part of some kind of conservative religious extremist conspiracy theory to justify “i don’t like how they sound” is fucking awful and appalling. go outside.
I was thinking of this thread just the other day!!! because I was thinking about how people hate Imagine Dragons for being overplayed
and I abruptly remembered how there was a tumblr post where a bunch of people decided that Imagine Dragons was regressive cult propaganda music that was only popular because of a malicious political agenda
And like sure, it's scary how people will make themselves see nonexistent ideological agendas in the music of a band they just...don't like, but to me it's even scarier how people will see a general aesthetic trend in art they don't like and think there has to be an evil ideology behind that aesthetic, because otherwise, how could art that suck be popular?!!1!??
penny and mav’s talk at penny’s house literally always makes me insane.
penny talking about learning to trust amelia (as a parent) which automatically segways into “is that what happened with rooster?”
and then everything mav says where the audience is finally tuned into why the animosity is going on and everything makes sense. why mav is still sort of reaching out while rooster is just mad and argumentative.
also the fact that this conversation happens right after his chat with ice about needing to let go, mav says “he might never come home” and that doesn’t just mean come back from the mission alive but come back to mav: to his dad.
sometimes i look at the shit harry says and i don't understand why so many people stan him, that man is blander than white bread like he tries to be intellectual and woke but there is Nothing going on inside his brain, not a single thought
The Breakfast Club members dating someone who's nonbinary
A/N: more pride content, yay! :D also this is set in the 80s, but it's pretty loose when it comes to accuracy since the term nonbinary wasn't coined until many years later
Warnings: being nonbinary in the 80s, some transphobia mentioned, swearing
Claire Standish
As uptight as Claire might be, she's pretty well-versed when it comes to gender politics
Around her friends, she acts like she doesn't care all that much, and she probably won't even correct them when they misgender you due to fear of judgment, but when you're alone she shows you that she really does by using your correct pronouns and stuff
If you don't like the clothes you own because they make you dysphoric, she'll happily take you out for a "gender affirming shopping spree", as she likes to call it
The look of pure joy on your face when you see yourself in the mirror for the first time, wear clothes that truly fit you- it makes her smile to know that she helped give you that kind of happiness
Andrew Clark
Andy may be somewhat of a himbo, but he's not just some dumb jock; he listens when you explain things to him about your gender identity and always corrects himself if he makes a mistake when referring to you
He always protects you from transphobes, even if it's from someone he's on the wrestling team with
He's even gotten in to some fights before over someone purposely trying to make you feel bad for being nonbinary, I'm not gonna lie
He always comforts you afterwards, telling you not to listen to those dipshits and reassuring you that you're perfect just being you
Brian Johnson
Brian is literally so sweet about it; he does his research and always checks with you before using gendered terms to make sure you don't feel uncomfortable
All of Brian's friends are supportive, too, which means you're probably close with his inner circle
If some annoying transphobe tries to pull the "there's only two genders" argument he's definitely the type of person to tell them how wrong they are and will even use science to back it up
You end up having long discussions over gender roles and politics together, sometimes with his friends and sometimes when you're alone
John Bender
Bender doesn't know too much about pronouns because of how little he pays attention in English class (or in any class, for that matter) but for you he definitely tries to get it right
For example, when he's about to use the wrong pronouns he always ends up catching himself and uses the correct ones before he accidentally misgenders you
Like Andy, he's gotten into fights for you over people making fun of your gender before; but unlike him it's a significantly higher amount as he doesn't have any potential sports scholarships to worry about
He not the best comforter, but if he sees that what someone said genuinely hurt your feelings he'll hold you as you cry (and make sure to beat them up afterwards)
Allison Reynolds
Allison knows what it's like to feel like an outcast for something you can't control, so she gets it
She always affirms your gender and uses the correct pronouns, so there's no worries there
Like Brian, you also have deep and thought out talks on gender roles, but it's usually only when the two of you are alone
If she sees someone openly harrass you, she probably won't do anything about it in the moment because of her hatred of confrontation, but she'll definitely check up on you afterwards and make sure you're okay
She ends up painting a landscape for you in the colors of the nonbinary flag, which you proudly hang up in your locker
