There really wasn’t a reason for her to be stressed out about tomorrow. It was only a summer internship, Regina still had to graduate and then she had a whole future ahead of her. One job wouldn’t change it. But nevertheless, it could make some sort of an impact on her career. Besides, the perfectionist that she was, Regina couldn’t let herself mess it up. Both Robin and Daniel already gave her the pep talks lately, telling her exactly all the right words she needed to hear, so while she was still a bit nervous, there really wasn’t a reason for her to call Robin at this hour. No reason at all, except for wanting to hear her best friend’s voice before she fell asleep. And… yes, maybe have this one final reassurance and boost of confidence from him.
“I know,” she said, a smile creeping onto her face. “I just needed a boost to my already big ego,” Regina laughed, flopping down on her bed. “But really, I’m fine.” And she was, now that she heard his voice. She was tense all evening and now had troubles falling asleep, for whatever reason she couldn’t really figure out. Maybe it was the blonde she had to share a table with, Robin’s date… and God, her friend could do so much better than her! Regina could have said something, should have, maybe. That blonde just won the lottery with a guy like Robin and she didn’t even bother with any attempt for small talks to get to know either one of them tonight. But Regina couldn’t exactly ruin Robin’s date just because she didn’t like her. Especially not now that she had Daniel; Robin deserved to find someone who’d make him happy as Daniel made her. She just hoped it wouldn’t be that woman.
“So… that chick,” she ventured, just as they always questioned and talked about each other’s dates – the good ones, as well as the terribly bad ones. Daniel and her were the first to call it a night and she had yet to hear Robin’s opinion after their night out. But only then Regina realized that while she hoped the blonde was already a history to him, Robin’s evening could have gone in a very different direction than that. “Oh God, she’s not… I’m not interrupting, am I?” she asked sheepishly.
Already Robin believes that maybe he may be able to sleep that night after all. Her voice has always done things to him. And if he knows that she’s calm and collected, then he can relax too. It seems like he’s always worried about her. Worried about her safety and security. He knows she’s a worrier and an overthinker and that sometimes gets him to overthink and worry about her. Really he’s never been this emotionally invested in anyone the way he is about Regina, but then again he doesn’t have anyone else that he’s known his whole life. As her best friend isn’t it his job to be worried about her?
“If your ego gets any bigger it’s going to explode.” He teases back easily. He’s always loved their playful banter. He loves how easy it is for them to tease one another and not be too upset. Maybe it’s because they know where the line is between fun and friendly and rude and hurtful. But again, they have had their whole lives to learn one another and to learn just how to push the other’s buttons. If Will or John had teased him as much as Regina does, he’s not sure that they’d still be good friends.
“That girl is long gone. You’re not interrupting anything.” There is a sadness to his voice that he’s trying his best to hid from his best friend. It’s not that he necessarily liked the girl, but more that he’s just so lonely. He’s envious of what Regina has with Daniel. He wants that. Wants the love and commitment that being in a relationship brings him. And yes, he knows that a lot of his friends have tried to set him up with really nice girls over the years, and that he’s always finding some flaw with them. Really if he had just given them a chance he might not be so damn alone right now and Regina may actually have been interrupting something. “Honestly, I don’t know why I agreed to a double date with her. I doubt I’m gonna be seeing her for much longer.” He knew why. Because he was trying to prove to Regina (or maybe himself) that he was happy just like she was with Daniel.
