The Rudolph Dirks Award sent me these stickers that can be put on my ‘War of the Worlds‘ graphic novel since it won the award for best literary adaption. Don‘t they look nice with all that gold? :-) Plus, there came a poster which retailers and comic book dealers can put on display that lists all the winners.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year! I want to say a huge THANK YOU for following my tumblr. I know I‘m not a regularly posting person, but I am doing my best and I just want to post things that are really news, so I might not post here as often as it should be. I am very grateful for everyone dropping by now and then! I wish you only the best for the new year, a good health, happiness and peace!
See you in next year with news again :-)!
The CATalogue of Südpol publishing arrived, announcing the upcoming volume of my children‘s book "Othello & Giovanni". In the last volume ‘Der große Katzenraub‘ (‘Catnapped!‘), cat brothers Othello and Giovanni made friends with goldfinch Rosella and fought mad scientist Waldemar Wummering who wanted to filter off the ‘seven lives‘-potion out of 100 cats. Luckily they succeded in doing so, leading them into this new adventure where a beautiful cat has moved in next door. Moni is so beautiful that it is likely she wins the ‘cat contest‘ taking place on a cat show in an old grand department store in the city. But greedy loan shark Mark Mörtel and his accomplice Lavinia Lifting (a former fashion model) have plans to sabotage the show terribly to get away with a treasure they found in a hidden room of the old building. Othello, Giovanni, Rosella and Karlchen are to the rescue to save Moni and the other cats! ‘Othello & Giovanni - Chaos auf der Katzenschau‘ (‘Cat Show Chaos‘) is coming out in February 2018!
Hello everybody! I am superhappy about this - my graphic novel adaption of H.G. Wells‘ classic ‘War of the Worlds‘ (Egmont) has been awarded with the Rudolph Dirks Award (named after famous comic pioneer Rudolph Dirks) in the ‘Best Literary Adaption‘ category 2017! This is a great honor for me. I am supergrateful to the jury.
Hello and sorry for posting not that much recently, I’m busy! But I can offer you a chance to solve the ‘christmas gift’ problem this year ;-): I’m at the Comic Con in Dortmund (Germany) next weekend, signing 'War of the Worlds’ for you! Here’s my schedule:
Saturday 12/9/17:
11 am - 1 pm
2 pm - 4 pm
Sunday 12/10/17:
12 am - 2 pm
You can find me at the booth of the 'Sammlerecke’ which is run bei Uwe Lochmann. Glad to see you there!
Oh, and on Sunday there's also a panel with me on the con where I demonstrate how I adapted this science fiction classic, with lots of pictures and some Q & A-time. It's where the workshops are on the Con!
For more details, please have a look at the Comic Con page. They’re updating hall plans soon!
Lovely October is here with its busy event schedules! For instance our ‘Reading Panels' live reading of my ‘War of the Worlds‘ graphic novel at Projekttheater Dresden on the 22nd at 8 pm (tickets: www.reservix.de)! This will be huge fun when four comic book artists, amongst them me, will do a reading of my comic live on stage, with sound effects and all! Whoever wanted to hear and see a scenic presentation of the story and science fiction in comic books in general can‘t miss :-). So come all! Here‘s to the facts: Sunday Oct. 22nd, 8 pm Projekttheater Dresden, Louisenstraße 47 01099 Dresden With fellow comic artists Katja Klengel, Adrian Vom Baur, Tim Gaedke and me :-). See you there!
On September 30 and October 1st, the German Comic Con in Berlin will be held at the Messe Berlin at the Berlin fair, Messedamm 22,14055 Berlin (halls 1.2 and 3.2.). For this year‘s fair, I was asked to do the ‘official artwork’ for the con. Since my ‘War of the Worlds‘ graphic novel came out this year by Egmont, it was my first choice to do something related to that.
I was happy to use the opportunity to illustrate a scene that could have happened throughout the novel, in fact, H.G. Wells himself gives it a thought in his book: The martians going on a rampage in victorian (or, in this case, wilheminian) Berlin. The author lets his main character (in my graphic novel adaption: Robert) think about what might happen to other capitals in the world at a point of the story where ‘all seems lost‘.
A thrilling idea for the illustrator :). So I prepped this martian war machine up for a marauding tour through one of Berlins most exclusive ‘shopping districts‘ of the late 19th century: Leipziger Straße. Here big and beautiful department stores had been built, the most famous one the Wertheim store (the ‘Mall of Berlin‘ is standing on its spot today). The building‘s design set new standards for warehouse architecture, with its long vertical columns and festive ornamental style by architect Alfred Messel. On the final illustration seen above, the martian war machine seems to have just destroyed the main part of the building.
In the background on the left, there was also place for a still-standing Brandenburg Gate.
I will sign the ‘War of the Worlds‘ graphic novel on the con at the Egmont booth (hall 3.2, A7). Here‘s the schedule:
Saturday, September 30:
12 am - 2 pm
from quarter to 3 pm to half past 3 pm there‘s a panel with me about my work and supposedly some live drawing
4 pm - 5 pm
Sunday, October 1:
12 am - 2 pm
3 pm - half past 4 pm
See you there!
Very happy! Just received the first copy of my upcoming picture book ’Du doofes Ding, du!’ (’You stupid thing, you!’) that I developed together with author Salah Naoura. The plot concerns around a boy who gets an ugly doll that he really, really dislikes. What would you do with an unwanted present? Well, our boy has some real good answers (Muhahahahaha!)... ’You stupid thing, you!’ is released in Germany on September 8!
Concept art for the diver’s lamps in my ’20.000 leagues under the Sea’ adaption. For more information about this project please look here: 20000leaguesunderthesea.tumblr.com
I will present my ’War of the Worlds’ graphic novel on June 29, 2017 at the Kulturzentrum Pelmke Pelmkestraße 14 in 58098 Hagen (Northrhine-Westfalia) at 8 pm. The entrance is free! I will show you how I came to this wonderful classic, how I researched for years and how I worked on it. Afterwards you can ask me anything and I will sign the book for you!
’The War of the Worlds’ graphic novel (and me ;-) will be in Munich next week for the Comicfestival. For those who want a drawing, here's my signing schedule at the Egmont booth at Alte Kongresshalle (subway: U4 and U5 Schwanthaler Höhe):
Friday May 26 from 10-12 am and 4-6 pm Saturday May 27 from 10-12 am, 1-2 pm and 5-6 pm Sunday May 28 from 1-3 pm Glad to see you there :-) Cheers!
Two new book signings of my ’War of the Worlds’ graphic novel (Egmont). Both depicting Emma, one of my main characters, doing things you might wanna do after you won your life back (and Martians have been defeated): The upper one (for a friend living in Rome) showing her visiting the Arch of Constantine, the one below finding her searching for children’s books in what is supposed to be the book department of a big store of the time ’War of the Worlds’ is set (maybe Harrod’s? Or somewhere in Europe, maybe Belgium). Is she planning a little family with Robert, my other main character of the graphic novel?
I am busy at the moment, and that’s why I can’t manage it to post more regularly, for which I’m sorry - I am working on some new projects and will keep you posted! But recently something great happened - my graphic novel adaption of H.G. Wells’ ’The War of the Worlds’ (Egmont Graphic Novel) was featured on german TV in the show ’Kulturzeit’ on 3Sat. They made a really nice movie -kind of a book trailer - for that which is now up on their page: Link It’s a happy feeling to see your panels animated and the story you dived in so deeply presented in a TV show, also kind of weird :-). But very good weird, indeed!
Hi there! Tomorrow, at 7:20 pm, my ’War of the Worlds’ graphic novel adaption will be featured on german TV in the show "Kulturzeit" on 3Sat. I am looking forward to that, feel free to snuggle on your couch and watch this really interesting program packed with many other art-and-literature-related topics, too.
Some dedications I did in copies of my ’War of the Worlds’ graphic novel that is hot off the press by Egmont.
