like plenty of black horror fans have said it better but it's fucking crazymaking how many people treat lovecraft's racism as a minor footnote or a quirky shock anecdote about his cat's name and not a central theme around which most of his work pivots. if you can't read an author's work without identifying and acknowledging its key themes, you may not actually like that work very much!

I find his sloppy attempts at being less racist fascinating, like how the Shoggoths in The Mountains of Madness were a poorly thought through attempt at explaining why slavery is bad. Or how at the end of The Shadow Over Innsmouth (Basically a story about the horrors of human/fishperson miscegenation) he had his protagonist discover that he was also part fish person and slowly turning into a fish person. This horror turned to joy when he realized it meant he would get to live forever with his (previously thought to be dead) mother under the sea. The whole story was written in reaction to Lovecraft discovering that he was part Welsh, so the book was probably partly an attempt at self exploration by a deeply racist man rather than someone seeking to write the most racist story ever.

Like, not to excuse any of his writing but there's this inner tension to a lot of his works where he seems to know that a lot of his racist beliefs are flawed and fallible but he's afraid of throwing away the framework of 19th century scientific racism because it would mean throwing away significant portions of his identity as a white upper class New Englander. A group he was already on the periphery of due to his poor health and his family's declining financial situation.

All this stuff is probably true, but it makes it sound like the workers are contaminating lettuce.

Wide-spread produce contamination happens through dirty irrigation water that sewage has leaked into.

Even if workers were taking shits in the field, it wouldn’t be enough to make these events and someone with intestinal diseases wouldn’t last long out doing manual labor in the hot sun (ask me how I know).

Food borne illnesses are almost always from shortcuts companies do to save a few bucks (don’t test the water, don’t test the produce, etc.)
