Hiiii! I'm new to the theatre fandom and I was wondering if you have any appropriate musical suggestions. I don't want them to have swearing sex scenes or LGBT thing in them! I'm a Christian and proud of it. Thanks so much!
Hey, I’m so glad you got into theatre! It’s a great art to love. Welcome!
I’ll try to limit my suggestions to musicals that have no swearing at all, so I’ll do my best. I’m glad you want to enjoy theatre in a way that fits your beliefs. I’m a Christian too, and so I have to examine my conscience with the content I let myself enjoy.
1. The older, classics are clean, so anything before the 80s should probably be good, like Rodgers & Hammerstein. I personally love The Sound of Music and Singin’ in the Rain.
2. Any Disney musical. The soundtrack for Lion King is one of my favorites, and Newsies is very popular.
3. Wicked, Fiddler on the Roof, Godspell, Seussical, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown are some off the top of my head. That’s a lot to start you off.
If there is something inappropriate you don’t like in any of the musicals, I apologize. Enjoy the shows! Feel free to message me anytime.
It's been 4 years since I received this anon and answered it casually, and I want to say I'm sorry with how I answered it. I still think about it and regret it. I grew up in a Christian, conservative home and got more liberal as I grew up, so I figured I could relate to the anon's background and answered the question. That was not the right way to handle this, and I knew better at the time. To handle it the way I did was a failure on my part. The right way to answer this question would be, "I appreciate your question, but it's impossible to recommend content that doesn't have LGBT+ influence. The LGBT+ community has been a part of Broadway history for its entire existence, and that's something we should celebrate. Gay and trans people have not only been the characters in musicals, but have also written those characters and the song they sing. They've worked on the costumes and created the choreography. They made the sets and handled props. They've won Tony awards! The wonderful thing about theatre is its ability to understand other people that may be different from us, and I would encourage you to listen to shows with LGBT+ stories to better understand what that is like." I really regret answering this ask like this 4 years ago, and I don't blame any of my followers for getting mad or unfollowing me. Even though I'm not active on this blog anymore, I am working on being more understanding and more of an ally in my personal life. I owe a lot of my personal development to theatre, and I hope it does the same for all of you.

Me at the stage door: I can't believe I got all these autographs!
Me a month later: What are these scribbles?
hey, i was actually wondering if you know any musicals that have LGBT characters in it? And I mean, besides RENT, which is the only one I know of
Hi anon!
I know it’s been a million years, but here are a few I know of: Bare, Falsettos, It Shoulda Been You, Spring Awakening, Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
I know there are more but that’s what I’ve got for now. I’m sure my followers can help with suggestions.

Me, reading a dream casting article: How did they manage to fit in the whole cast of Hamilton this time?
Things Theatre Fans Say #152
Friend: Hey, what are you thinking abou-
Me: TONYS TONYS TONYS TONYS TONYS TONYS TONYS TONYS
Do you have any dream casting?
I will forever be angry that we had to see mediocre Ryan Gosling in La La Land when Leslie Odom Jr is basically perfection for that role. I would give up an autographed playbill to hear him sing City of Stars.
Things White People Say: HELL YEAH, I LIKE CHEESE!
I actually have a story related to almost this exact phrase but I’m also really unsure why this was sent to me because this isn’t a “things white people say” blog??
Unless this is a nice social commentary on Broadway’s history of whitewashing in which case: tru.

Me: It's been 10 years and I'm still mad Idina Menzel didn't get a song in Enchanted.

Hey, awesome followers-
I’m so thankful for all your support, and I’d really love to share the love. If any of you are into theatre or want to be an actor/stage manager/dancer/any profession in theatre and you don’t have supportive family or friends, just like or reblog this post and I’ll pm you an encouraging message.
(I’d love to send love to anyone who needs encouragement, but I’d rather be able to send specific messages.)
