"animal sciences" is like a huge bullshit degree that only exists in the usa bc in real countries you would need to AT LEAST study veterinary medicine (maybe bio would work as well?) in some sense to be able to say u know what yr talking abt when it comes to animals.
also ppl need to stop using their single private experience with their own meat/dairy farm as a rule and ignoring the context of not only environmental exploitation but also capitalism when talking abt dairy nd meat industries.
LMAO guys look XD
UMMMM, Animal Sciences is a thing everywhere??????? They literally give out a degree in it in the same university I studied at? Like, sometimes the degree is called Agricultural science and incorporates more botany/plant ag modules, but the focus on animals is much the same.
And also, no, veterinary medicine is not the only effing career path that allows you to acquire a working knowledge of how animals function. Like, jfc, OP, but I love how you got through your entire rambling post without mentioning the word ZOOLOGY.
Most of my ethology knowledge came from my wildlife biology degree ffs, my veterinary training during my nursing qualification was almost entirely medicine and husbandry based, and gave out very little working knowledge of the theory behind animal behaviour and how to apply it to real life cases. Like, yeah, you can specialise in that stuff through veterinary, but even veterinary medicine courses often only provide a rudimentary understanding of ethology, especially when it comes to livestock.
Read it again and it’s just as stupid the second time. What now?
Hi I’m a vet and I also have an Animal Science degree. You are absolutely, 100% incorrect. My AnSci degree required me to study not only the husbandry of various farm species, but also nutrition, welfare, food science, genetics, anatomy, behavior, toxicology, ethics, biotechnology, microbiology, organic chemistry, physics, plus all of the general university requirements and major specific electives. And that was a pre-vet concentration, which focused far less on husbandry and production and more on general sciences and overview. But I still came out of undergrad (which was a full 4 year degree btw with 15-19 credits per semester) with experience on dozens of farms, case studies, literature reviews, and courses with the people who are writing the “Actual Papers”. And I wasn’t focusing on industry or production. The students that were getting their degrees to be involved in farming had to take far more husbandry classes and practical experiences. And even with my less focused degree I still had hundreds, if not more than a thousand hours of practical experience. I can’t even imagine how much practical experience someone actually focusing on a particular species would have. This is really fucking insulting for you to say that my degree is bullshit. That a degree that I worked my ass off for is bullshit. Just because you all have a weird hate boner for Dairyisntscary doesn’t mean that you get to decide an entire degree is useless.
Saying that you have to be a vet to know anything about animals is ridiculous. A food animal vet knows a lot about husbandry and general production but that’s such a load of bullshit to say that we’re the only ones who know anything about animal care. An AnSci degree is 4 years of hard work to prepare you to work in the food animal industry. Yeah we get to do some cool electives that are pretty chill but do you think we just pay tens of thousands of dollars to dick around for 4 years? No one’s saying a bachelor’s degree is the same as a PhD with decades of research and experience but jfc it’s just as legit as any other bachelor’s degree.
And for the record, I went to the same school as Dairyisntscary. It’s honestly really creepy and sad how obsessed y’all are with Dairyisntscary.
