Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones, who served for nearly 30 years, was defeated in the May 2026 Republican primary by Cameron "Cam" Hunt, a former deputy he had fired. Hunt secured approximately 51% of the vote (9,301 votes to Jones's 8,994), ending Jones's tenure that began in 1998.
