Books April 2026:

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter – Stephen Graham Jones

A native american revenge story with vampires. Sounds odd, but it's really fucking good. It’s embedded in historical events so the true horror of it stems from the crushing knowledge that the most gruesome crimes in this aren't fiction. It's definitely more than just a horror novel and for me it's easily up there with other vampire classics. 5/5

A Power Unbound – Freya Marske

I’ll keep this one short because I've mentioned multiple times now how much I enjoyed this trilogy, so you already know I loved this one. 5/5

I finished my book series and oh it was glorious and I'm happy about the completion but I also feel kinda hollow now that it's over 💔

I can only repeat myself and highly recommend the The Last Binding trilogy. To think I was reluctant to pick it up at first, oh the irony. Anyway it's a fantasy series, the characters range from early twenties to mid-thirties (i always enjoy characters over thirty ✨), there's plot as well as romance and spice and found family that got to me. Its also queer.

Anyway i think i need to pick up sth entirely different now because anything fantasy-adjacent can't hold a candle for a while 🥲

i had to switch to another book for today's ride to/from work because my two book f/o's are having a moment in the next chapter and i cannot read this in public (not because of the sex but because it'll make me an emotional mess and i don't want that to happen in public transport lol)

just in case there was any confusion about who my fav RE character is (it's Luis ❤️)

first of all luis never died in canon bc he's too sexy for that. there's massive feral black cat x cockatoo energy at play between those two, basically the epitome of i hate everybody but you on my oc's part. my oc was very determined not to bond with anybody at the new workplace especially not with bigmouthed casanovas they unfortunately end up with as a lab partner. that notion went up in flames and now they're apparently 'in love' and 'having feelings', ew.

Books I've read in 2026 (so far):

I Found Puppets Living In My Apartment Walls - Ben Farthing Exactly as the title says, protagonist wakes up to a puppet in his room and follows it inside his apartment walls that when the horror unfolds. This was a short and fun read I got it for my birthday and read it in one sitting. You can kinda see the twists and turns coming if you’re genre-savvy but the puppet theme is what made it most unique to me. Delightfully bleak ending. Not sure why it needed AI cover art? 3/5

The Highlands - Steinar Bragi A group of friends take a trip through Iceland until their car breaks down and they’re stranded in a volcanic desert where they meet a strange elderly couple. I was so hoping for backwoods horror embedded in Icelandic folklore with this one. Sadly it never went there. Overall futile and confusing plot with randomly thrown in gore and inevitable flashbacks of the protagonists pasts (my beloathed). I can deal with an unconventional narrative and I do enjoy weird stories but this one just wasn’t it. 1/5

The Southern Book Club’s Guide To Slaying Vampires - Grady Hendrix Southern-housewives fight back against a vampire trying to undermine their 80ies suburbia. The description of the vampire feeding was the most disgusting one I’ve ever read, I liked that. In general when the book does tense or gruesome scenes – and it has some pretty vile ones – it does them exceptionally well. I just wished the author would’ve done more with the characters. The plot opens up a lot of possibilities but ultimately never delivers. There's also topics such as racism and misogyny but it never gets much deeper than a mere plot point or shallow conversation, don’t hold your breath for nuanced social commentary. All things considered I can’t say I had a bad time reading it. 3/5

The Unworthy - Agustina Bazterrica Dystopia with strong religious themes set after the collapse of civilization via global warming. I liked this one more than I thought I would. It’s not a fun read by far and will leave you feel devastated at times. Deals with topics such as abuse of power, sexual violence and misogyny; there's also queer elements to the story. It feels like a twisted fable. 4/5

A Marvellous Light - Freya Marske Set in turn-of-the-century Britain when baronet Sir Robin gets tangled up in a magical conspiracy involving magical artifacts, and queer romance. First book of The Last Binding Trilogy. I was very quickly very much hooked. I found the balance between story progression and romance to be very good. The few sex scenes were just the icing on the cake. I also found the way conjuring up magic is described refreshingly unique it's somewhere between coding and weaving but it's also a contract I'm bad at explaining it right now but it works I promise. 4/5

A Restless Truth - Freya Marske The sister of aforementioned baronet gets tangled up in a murder mystery on a cruise ship, and queer romance. The second book follows the plot of the first one and personally I liked the character constellation and the setting even more. (Fun fact, I gained not one but two f/o’s from this, hehe. I already made an OC, book f/o's hit different sorry💕) 5/5
