“the fifth doctor is so boring” the fifth doctor is an old man who woke up as a young man. a man who remembers what it’s like to be old and aspires to reach that level of maturity again to be taken seriously in his new body, but who can’t because he has an almost pubescent temperament. he tries and fails to be the doctor because he is simply ill-equipped on a mechanical basis and his entire character arc is built on the tragedy of losing a child who was in his care. this permeates his development to the point that he sacrifices himself for the life of one girl he barely knew.

THE FIFTH DOCTOR IS NOT BORING! he is a tragic hero.

Doctor Who is a great fandom to be in on tumblr because you'll see spoilers everywhere but not a single one of them is coherent unless you've seen the episode anyway. like oh the glorbon is secretly trying to ensnare humanity in a giant crab trap? the new companion Jiminy Pubble turned out to be the latest regeneration of the Doctor's old enemy The Fuckwizard? thanks I know less than I did before

the thing with doctor who is that even if it gets cancelled (which it hasn't yet, contrary to what people seem to think) we can just go back to the start of the show and watch it all again, and by the time we've done that it'll probably have gotten revived

also frankly i'm sick of this chibnall revisionism just because rtd2 is ass. "chibnall era was always so good and you guys were haters" no. no it wasn't and it still isn't.

even if rtd2 is worse than the chibnall era (i'm not sure i agree with this, at least not yet) that doesn't make the chibnall era good. 13 is still extremely out of character. the "fam" is still made up of cardboard cutouts of people. chibnall still introduced dhawan master, supposedly placed him after missy in the timeline, and undid a 3 season long character arc for the master in one fell swoop. the politics in chibnall's era were still dogshit. two writers can be bad at writing at the same time. two different creative teams can fumble the bag on doctor who.

there isn't one "villain" of doctor who. i know it would be easy if there was. but there isn't.

it's been a while since chibnall's era but you chibnall fans need to understand that even if you personally enjoyed it, it was still shit. the pro amazon episode and revealing the master's race to the nazis scene and "actually graham trying to comfort you about your cancer makes me feel kind of weird so fuck you" scene all still happened. this is out of character writing. that's not the doctor.

every post criticising the chibnall era for a specific character treating another character terribly/having characterisation that should've gone to another character commits the understandable mistake of assuming any of these characters have characterisation or relationships developed to any meaningful extent

I am so tired. SO tired of chibnall revisionism. Which is not to say I think there's nothing good in chibnalls era - there's so much cool original ideas in it, which is what makes it so sincerely screaming frustrating to watch because every cool, original thing it does is immediately undermined either by chibnalls complete inability to write or chibnalls shockingly obvious racism. I am in AGONY right now. I am in doctor who HELL going through three entire seasons of this shit!!! I understand how frustrating it must be to hear "thirteen was good but her writing was so bad" but well maybe the writing shouldn't be so bad then! Maybe the thirteenth Doctor deserves a good script!

the politics in chibnall era dw era so far are blowing my mind... it's incredibly diverse casting but everyone is literally a cop. a brown (queer?? i'm not there yet) muslim woman companion is a cop. a cop saved her life when she was a teen and she was inspired to also become a cop. the plot revolves around a married gay couple in one episode but one is a cop. space amazon isn't bad, the actual villain is an activist who went undercover as an employee, because they have to resort to replacing packages with bombs to prove that space amazon is bad. space luxury resorts that destroy planets so they can buy them up for cheap and build on them aren't bad, the actual villain is a journalist/terrorist who only wants to blow up the space resort because the manager is her mom and they have a bad relationship

Chibnall has clearly SEEN classic who, because weaving in satisfying callbacks to the classic series is something he's good at! The trouble is though that Chibnall seems to have watched the entirety of Doctor Who and come out of it thinking the Doctor is always the good guy and everything they do is justified. Which is why thirteen gets to do things like "sealing up spiders to a slow drawn out death" and "selling the master to the nazis" and not only does she not face consequences for them, the framing of these actions make them look like reasonable and acceptable things for the hero of our show to do! Even when ten and eleven did horrendous things, this was shown to be clearly sinister! When the sixth Doctor killed a man by suffocating him with cyanide people got mad, even though the fourth Doctor did the same thing to Solon! The Doctor is not always the good guy. I don't think Chibnall knows this.

Chibnall fails abysmally at making the Master seem cartoonishly evil because everything, EVERYTHING, every batshit evil attempt at world domination post-spyfall part two is completely understandable. Look at me. The doctor gave the master to the mercy of the fucking Nazis. The master was presumably tortured and abused and spent 77 years blindingly angry at the doctor and all of humanity. Any atrocity he commits against them is not simply out of entitlement, he has a VENDETTA now.

every so often i recall that they made the master dress up as a nazi (for no reason) then had the doctor reveal his appearance (i.e. Not White) to the nazis (for no reason). why did they do this. what was the reason for this. is this not obviously racist and antisemitic? is this not obviously in incredibly poor taste? why do people still like this episode. i'm going insane

One of my Dr who pet peeves is when people talk about classic who like oh haha they had a shoestring budget and all the effects were tinfoil and bubblewrap, that's how doctor who is SUPPOSED to be, it doesn't need a budget! And it's like ok but classic who was made by professionals who worked very hard and often had good special effects ):<

People dunk on the tinfoil cybermen but like cmon these are complicated specially made costumes that were re-designed several times over the course of the 60s and they are good! Look at these guys they're great!

would like to clarify that my issue here isn't really with people Insulting the way classic who looks (tho people do also do that) but with the more specific phenomenon of people trying to be nice about the show and in the process insinuating that people making it were something other than consummate professionals doing a good job.
