Hello! Not an experience, but rather a question. What is islam? Im catholic myself, but would like to learn so that I am able to show better inclusion towards all. I hope this isn't too invasive!
Assalamu Aliykum! Donât worry, it wasnât invasive.
Islam is actually a lot closer to Christianity than people think! Islam is an Abrahamic religion that believes in one God, just like Christianity. Muslim believe that God (whom we call Allah), sent prophets to guide societies and preach Islam. Famous examples are Adam, Nuh (Noah), Musa (Moses), Isa (Jesus), and Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The main difference is that while Christians believe that Jesus is the son of God, we believe that he was instead a prophet. The final prophet was Muhammad (PBUH) was the one to receive the Qurâan, our Holy Book! Similar to the Bible for Christians, Muslims believe that the Qurâan is the word of God and provides Muslims with guidelines to live their life.
Islam teaches people to worship God alone, live morally, and do good deeds in order to succeed in the afterlife (i.e. going to heaven)! The 5 pillars of Islam are:
â Shahadah: Believing that there is no God other than Allah and that Muhammad (PBUH) is His messenger.
â Salat: Prayer, which we do 5 times a day.
â Zakat: Giving charity to help those in need.
â Saum: Fasting during the month of Ramadan.
â Hajj: Pilgrimage to Mecca, which Muslims try to do at least once in their lifetime if they are financially able.
So in many ways, the values of Islam are very close to Christianity, but the understanding of Jesus and the nature of God is where the key differences are.
Hope I was able to explain things clearly!
