Summary:

Daniel won his first Pulitzer with an article that he wrote over one feverish week, high on the best cocaine he’d ever hit. Half-starved, and angry about it. Wholly out of his mind with fire. Three months behind on rent and desperate for a break. He didn’t remember the day it was published, let alone screaming at his editor for altering his headline. The article that won his second Pulitzer took him ten years of blood, sweat, and tears. He had brawled for that story, facing off against unremitting skepticism, a vicious divorce, a back alley beatdown, a dozen failed leads, being fired, being rehired, and six broken ribs so he could keep going. Every sentence had been suffering like nothing he’d ever experienced. White-knuckled determination alone crafted that pain onto two thousand perfect lines. Publishing that one ingrained a permanent pleasure spot in his brain, one he shamelessly hit when cocaine just wouldn’t cut it. Louis had been a fever week. Brawling with Armand was gonna take him a lot longer than ten years.

Get yourself a fabric store that will light your fabric on fire for you

No but legit I asked what the fiber content of something was and the guy didn’t know so he cut a chunk off and lit it on fire and felt the ashes and was like. Yeah this is mostly cotton with a lil bit of silk. And that was the moment I knew. This is it. This is the fabric store for me. Also that guy is marriage material. Not for me but damn some person is gonna be so happy with him.

Ok but this is actually one of the easiest ways to tell what something is made of! I did a textiles degree and one day as part of a class we all went outside with a pile of scrap fabric and set fire to the little pieces and recorded how they burned. We were given a chart that looked something like this to tell what each fabric was (it gets a little tricky is it’s a mix of fabrics though). Why did we do this? There is very little regulation in the textiles industry so a lot of materials are mislabelled as something they aren’t and sold for more than they should be, also sometimes people buy fabric second hand or discounted which doesn’t have any label at all. If you have a fabric you are having doubts about, cut a tiny piece off and do the burn test and you should know pretty fast what you are dealing with. Anyways your fabric store should be lighting things on fire because this means that they are actually checking what the fabrics are and aren’t trying to pass cheap stuff off as more expensive than it is.

The really interesting thing (imo) about this chapter of the book, is how it defines rest. It’s not talking just about sleeping, but also things like social connection and physical movement. So the 42% of your day that is rest might involve:

Meaningful conversation with someone you have a connection with

Exercising

Paying attention to your food, whether that’s shopping for it, cooking it or eating it

Socialising

Daydreaming

Each of us will need a different balance of these things, and each of these individual things will be different from person to person. The socialising and the meaningful connections might be IRL or it might be online - one of the examples in the book of something that counts as rest is “live-tweet Games of Thrones with a thousand fellow fans”.

It’s a really interesting book - definitely worth reading :)

(And Douglas Adams was obviously right all along - 42 is the answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything;)
