Not joking... Hitting play on a new Taylor Swift album is one of the absolute joys of my life and the fact that I get to experience that again tonight has me feeling very thankful
“She would always explain what each song was about to me, even before she articulated the Folklore concept. And I could tell early on that they were these narrative songs, often told from a different… not in the first person. So there are different characters in the songs that appear in others. You may have a character in ‘Betty’ that’s also related to one in ‘Cardigan,’ for example. And I think that was, in her mind, very, very important. It doesn’t seem like, for this record at least, that she was inspired to write something until she really knew what it was about. And I think I’m used to a more — at least lately — impressionistic and experimental world of making stuff without really knowing what it is. But this was more direct, in that sense. That was really helpful, to know what it was about and it would guide some of the choices we were making. Every time she would send something, she would narrate a little bit, like how it fit, or what it was about. And then when she told me about Folklore as a concept, it made so much sense. Like ‘The Last Great American Dynasty,’ for example, this kind of narrative song that then becomes personal at the end — it flips and she enters the song. These are kind of these folkloric, almost mythical tales that are woven in of childhood, lost love, and different sentiments across the record. It was binding it all together and I think it’s personal, but also through the guise of other people, friends and loved ones.”
— Aaron Dessner on folklore’s concept and how Taylor revealed it to him (x)
Taylor’s comments/answers during YouTube Q&A with fans before the premiere of “Cardigan” music video (July 23rd/24th 2020)
TAYLOR LIKED!
honestly this is when it pays to be a taylor stan well-versed in her entire discography, including and especially her early work and unreleased songs. because the general public knows her for her confessional, straightforward songwriting. they’re used to taking her lyrics at face value. hence the many MANY texts i’ve received in the last hour asking me if taylor “broke up with her boyfriend” or if she’s ok.
but if you listen to early unreleased songs and selections of her work throughout the years, she’s proven she’s great at putting fictional storylines or other people’s stories to song. the emotions are real – they’re hers. but the details of the events are not ripped from the pages of her diary this time.
letting go of this insistence that every detail of every song is a clue to her personal life really frees us up to analyze these songs and find the universal humanity in them instead of just celebrity gossip fodder.
I don't care if "folklore" is everyone's favourite album or not but one thing that we can agree on is that this is the best songwriting ever. not just in taylor's career but the best songwriting I have ever seen anywhere. its just *chef's kiss*
well lads.... i have finished it.... and i truly mean it when i say i think i have a new favorite album and for once it’s genuinely not just because it’s the newest one it’s because it’s one of the most beautiful and thought provoking things she has ever pieced together and i cannot even fathom the love i feel for this piece of fucking art
so goddamn excited over the idea of taylor using this album to craft her own compendium of folktales… interconnected stories that have morals/themes that resonate with her life but aren’t about her….. oh my god…. an acoustic folk album full of original characters…. joni mitchell meets the brothers grimm…. bruh… a conceptual fairy tale archetypal album…
THIS IS THE FIRST ALBUM FROM TAYLOR IN HER THIRTIES
hands down best taylor swift album period
i’m gonna pass out folklore is essentially taylor writing her own folklore with her own characters and plot points IM GOING TO PASS OUT
ugh an artEESt
now it’s up to you to pass them down
this album is like if speak now grew up and i’m loving it
This is a lyrical masterpiece. This is everything I have waited for since RED and more. It’s her best album, the best she has ever sounded, and honestly it’s just like a brand new but also old Taylor at the same time? It’s better than poetry I CANT EXPLAIN IT
you guys i love album release day/night because those of us who don’t come on tumblr regularly come back and we’re all like a big happy family again getting hyped for new music and then sharing our thoughts and praise for taylor and i just
