The Science Stories of 2011
The biggest story of 2011, in my opinion, was that neutrino’s send from Geneva arrived in Italy 60 billionths of a second earlier than expected.
“Is time travel possible?” was the question posed by the tabloids. The answer? Maybe. If you’re a neutrino. Subsequent repeats of the experiments and a fine tuning of the method has since put these findings into question.

2011 was also the year that everybody who watched the news became an instant expert in the infamous Higg’s Boson Particle and particle physics. Inserting phrases like “the origin of mass” and “a billionth of a second after the Big Bang” into normal everyday conversation. The latest LHC results are still not conclusive but show glimpses of the Higg’s particle. This is also my favourite story of 2011 as the findings of these experiments can put to bed 50 years of questioning about its existence.

At the start of December, Kepler 22b was classified as a possible exoplanet and dubbed “Earth’s twin”. Located 600 light years away, it is the most Earth-like planet ever discovered, with hospitable surface temperatures and a regular orbit around its sun.

In March, Japan was hit by a devastating Earthquake and fresh fears over the safety of nuclear power were raised.

Away from physics and onto health matters, a few stories seem to have real promise for the next few years. A lung cancer vaccine showing promise in trails, stem cell therapy curing diabetes in rats, gene therapy for a possible TB vaccine and new antibody therapies for MS sufferers. The first fully artificial organ transplant was performed this year as well. Mobile phones were branded “killers” in a misrepresented report published by WHO.
2011 health stories in Europe were overshadowed this summer by the Killer Cucumber outbreak in the summer. Over the pond, the US government lifted its ban on stem cell research and revived a dead heart using the same technology.

Controversial though they may be, tests involving animals have featured heavily in my blog posts this year, including replacing part of the cerebellum of rats with a computer chip, and teaching a chimp to use a virtual arm. Animals also featured heavily in my countdown of the strangest science experiments ever, including spiders on drugs, elephants on LSD, creation of the Schmidt pain index, the Vacanti ear mouse, chimp being raised by humans and arousing Turkeys. A report was also published this year, documenting the use of animals in experiments, which saw an overall rise in the number of procedures carried out, but on fewer animals.

I also counted down the strangest deep sea creatures, with the Pacific Barreleye being crowned a controversial winner, ahead of the blobfish, which finished 5th, despite being the bookies favourite to win.

2011 has been a busy year for science news, particularly the world of physics. The research and initial findings from this year in all fields will be the foundations of the stories in 2012 that I will be blogging about.
Thank you very much for every single one of your 2000+ hits from 49 countries in the past 12 months, I really appreciate every single one of them.
