Enough of the trope where memory loss undoes the damage or the corruption or whatever. More content where removing memories just removes the context.
The tragedy of needing to grieve and not knowing what or who you lost or why. The angst of having trauma and being denied the awareness that it's trauma. The suspense of being different somehow and left to wonder how and when. The tension of knowing that something is off and you can't find where it hurts. The Adventure Zone gets it. Kingdom Hearts gets it.
There is an aching inside you and you don't know how it got there.

some of these scenes, man. "does it wash off". things that someone from the preservation wouldn't even think about because like what do you mean i can't color the walls of the house i'm staying in. gurathin standing there cradling his nail-polished fingers. of course you'd worry about the finances first and foremost, makes sense, but also what a novel concept isn't it when you could only ever have things that wash off. no identifiable characteristics and no loss to company value. born to be a goth cursed to be a landlord white.

is that why it was so important to you to reapply the nail polish before breaking and entering.
during your self-care makeover sessions, did bharadwaj ever try talking you into getting face tattoos. has ratthi ever offered to make you some body jewelry because wouldn't you look so good with an ear piercing to accentuate your port, and you didn't know how to say that it still blows your mind that other people all over the corporation had enough power to choose where to add holes to their bodies just for fun and decoration and not to get in the drugs and the data and whatever else you could be used as a receptacle and storage for.
when bharadwaj said she could still smell the creature on her body despite having stolen literally all the soap and you said you have therapy modules what kind of modules did you think she was thinking about. where did you go in that moment there.

TBH I didn't love that scene at first. It's not that I thought he was being a perv or anything. Even Murderbot recognizes that it's something else before it stops watching. It just made me uneasy, the way Gurathin looks around before squishing through the door. It read like he wasn't supposed to be there. And I didn't know TV Gurathin that well yet.
I love these tags as a take. And it's not that I'm arguing for it but I'm wondering how after all these months, I never thought of the worm smell->pillow smell association.
And in the scene leading up, I love the awkwardness between Gurathin and Bharadwaj, two people who obviously care a lot about each other. She's startled because someone caught her crying and she's embarrassed. But he reacts by instantly stepping back and holding up both hands, palms open as he apologizes. In short, he reacts as if he expects her to be physically afraid of him. And he's so upset that he upset her.
I think it's as @lovesongs4robots said in another set of tags, the cuts between locations and Murderbot's narration are distracting. And the actual content of the narration is deliberately unsympathetic, because Murderbot. So if you're listening to it even if with only half an ear you might stick with its framing.
the pillow scene for me is hard too, and my instinct is to look away because i viscerally feel like i am not supposed to be watching (and i do recommend rewatching it with the sound off because, well. shut up murderbot). i enjoy multiple simultaneous reads of the scene (certainly not all of them, as there are some incredibly ungenerous reads of gurathin's character and assumptions that have no basis in text imo), and i think it is deliberately intended to be opaque and controversial because we are supposed to feel what murderbot feels, which is, "idek what to make of you, man."
i can share how i interpreted it when i first watched it, which is grief. it looked to me exactly how scenes of parents or loved ones coming into a time-capsule-bedroom of someone who is long dead are framed: the soft crack-opening of the door, turning on the light, looking at photographs and artifacts, circling to the bed. it reminded me of how in Monk, Monk kept his wife Judy's pillow in an airtight plastic bag and would open the bag to smell it only on her birthday, until he couldn't smell her anymore. it reminded me of how i still get on my knees and bury my face in blankets and pillows that my cat who passed a year and a half ago used to like. sometimes grief is anticipatory too; i used to bury my face in him the same way when he was still alive and cry from grief.
so what i saw was gurathin grieving on two different levels: one being of what could've happened (and might still happen): that what happened to bharadwaj could've happened to mensah (except worse, of course, with no one there to save her); that it could still be mensah next time so he might as well start grieving now; or maybe some relief that it hasn't been mensah, that he can still smell just her on there and no one else. and then another layer - grieving what could never happen - knowing he can never be part of her (any?) family, can never have her love him the way he wants to be loved (which! true! this is not a man to try and successfully integrate into a polyamorous relationship). he's just the world's most haunted house, and half of his ghosts are alive! yay! here, have another one.
but i do find it very interesting that he felt so overwhelmed immediately after that particular 1-minute conversation with bharadwaj that he just had to go into mensah's room despite knowing full well secunit's watching and/or recording. why would you ever want to present yourself so vulnerable to it! to the company! unless you just hit a perfect storm of emotional turmoil that overrode all the caution and reason. idk.
gurathin confessing to mensah (coming clean)
gurathin recovering from his corporation rim-induced addictions once he becomes a refugee on preservation (getting clean)
bharadwaj's fixation on soaps and washing off the smell of the creature (physical cleanse), gurathin offering therapy modules to help with her recovery (mental cleanse)
gurathin combating the company's memory wipe of mb's data (clean slate) by backing up its essence (data backup + standing up for its personhood) and then transferring it back to itself
mb leaving in the night while presaux is asleep, except for gurathin (almost a clean break)

i do think there should be more stories and shows and stuff about guys falling in love with butch women actually, i think that’d be a good thing. and not ‘this is as butch as twitter can handle’, i mean butch as can fucking be without apology, and making those boys weak in the knees about it. i think it’s great actually to have f/m romances that exist to break gender norms, too. i think it sucks that the only mainstream het romances that exist are either about women who are already feminine or with women who are just a little too scarily masculine and have to be fixed into being girlier. that’s shit.
it’s not like. taking away from queer people if you let “the straights” have some genderfuckery in their romance, too. that’s good, actually, the blurring of gender roles and performance and getting better understandings of your own sexuality is good for everyone. and it’s really fucking weird if you think that mainstream “het” romances shouldn’t feature women who are “too masculine” because that’s only allowed for queer people, somehow.
Alongside this I want to see romances with women falling for men who blatantly exist outside the gender norms too
I think that would be healthy for everyone
