Seeking resources
Hi there and hello! I'm dusting off this page just briefly as I'm searching for resources.
Are there any modern Chinese folk religion practitioners here that might be able to point me in the direction of modern practices and observances - something accessible to an omnist (neopagan). My little gremlin is Chinese on his dad's side and I would like to find some resources that can help me help him connect spiritually to that heritage without my interfering completely or teaching incorrectly. Are there ways we can incorporate Chinese magic and deities around the house in a natural way?
I am learning Mandarin - my spouse speaks Mandarin but no longer reads it fluently. So resources in Chinese are great but unless it's in pinyin they are unfortunately not helpful.
TIA!!

Rant
GOD im so tired of fear mongering in the witch community, like PLEASE stop telling people to be afraid of rocks or tools or shit you found in the fucking woods.
"Don't let others look into your scrying mirror"
I will show whoever tf i want because I worked hard making it myself
"Cleanse a pendulum before use or bad spirits will come through"
LIES. The world doesn't fucking revolve around you or me, its very uncommon for energies to randomly harrass you.
"Protect yourself before every ritual OR ELSE"
NO. I will cleanse with smoke and say "no negative energies welcome" AND THAT IS ALL.
Just like in real life, things aren't out to get you! Treat spirits like people, most don't give a fuck about what you're doing. Protect yourself when you feel it is necessary. And yes, sometimes a negative energy might randomly latch on to you and make you feel sick for a day. BIG FUCKING DEAL. I feel like being afraid of every unknown magical energy is the same logic as being like "everyone in my life is going to hurt me." Its unrealistic. Relax.
I agree with the idea here, especially the fear mongering, but I'd also like to offer my take.
For me, cleansing crystals and other objects is a sanitary practice, in the same way sweeping and vacuuming your home or washing dishes or clothes you buy, is sanitary. Ceanliness for your spiritual tools is absolutely as important as cleanliness in your home and body.
Especially, especially if you believe your tools are sentient or carry energy. I don't believe in passive malicious energy, but I do believe my cards or pendulum will not work properly for me if their energies are confused. So I cleanse my tools when I bring them home. I want my tools to be attuned to ME and MY energy. I don't feel they can properly do that if multiple energies are clouding them. But it's certainly not out of any fear of malicious energy.
I don't use a scrying mirror (they never worked for me) but if I did I'd use the same logic. I'm not going keep someone from handling my tools, be it pendulum, crystals, cards, or mirror. Absolutely not! I encourage them to look because I am proud of my tools! But I think of it like someone borrowing a piece of clothing or hair brush. I'm definitely gonna clean it after they use it (and probably before, too if for some reason it's not already clean).
I absolutely agree with the fear mongering. It is 100% NOT the reason to cleanse yourself, your space, or your tools. Also stuff you find in the woods most likely does not carry malicious energy. It's nature. Chaotic Neutral at best and at worst. And it most likely found YOU, anyway, not the other way around. Stop being afraid of shit like that!!
Unless you are actively cursebreaking or performing protection rituals against a known or unknown enemy, there is no need to be afraid of the energy swirling through the universe and other people. It's indifferent to you, blessing and cursing as it wills, not because you are some sort of target.
low-effort litha/summer solstice/midsummer
as always, I forgot about a major witchy holiday! so, I put together this quick list of ways you can celebrate with little preparation.
make sun tea
bask in the sunlight/spend time outdoors
no bonfire? no problem! light a candle (or three)
dehydrate some slices of citrus and decorate your altar with them
give some extra love to your garden/houseplants
buy fresh, in-season fruit to enjoy
help save the bees by making bee habitats, plant bee-friendly flowers, make bee waterers, and/or buy local honey
make honey cakes
happy summer solstice, everyone!
A fair and accurate representation if I do say so myself
Good morning, dearest freaky darlings.

Summer Solstice Honey Cookie Recipe

A sweet cookie recipe from Gather Victoria for celebrating the Summer Solstice.
There are going to be people who love Harry Potter at pride.
There are going to be people who eat at Chick-Fil-A at pride.
There are going to be people who shop at Hobby Lobby at pride.
There are going to be people who have a favorite cereal from Kellogg’s and a favorite chocolate bar from Nestle at pride.
Not every queer person is going to fit your puritanical version of the “ideal queer person” at pride, but you’re there for solidarity and to celebrate. These people are not your “enemy”. They are not “the bad guys”. They are not “poor representation of the queer community”. They might not even know why these things are bad. But we also owe our solidarity to the people these large corporations and people in power negatively affect. Life isn’t perfect. Neither are people. But some people are better than others.
Good morning all! Starting my day out with a smoothie and some class reading for my Popular Fiction class! Happy Sunday!
I recently brought home a new deck! I've been wanting it for a while. It feels like a single card reader- yes/no questions, daily 1-card draws, etc. I'd like to start warming up this new deck and getting to know it, so for the rest of the month I'm doing free 1-card pulls (1 ask total per day) of either a yes/no question or a daily advice reading!
I do have a Ko-Fi account so if you like your reading, consider leaving a tip!

How many mass graves and extinct cultures are needed to convince Christian apologists that missionaries and missionizing are inherently xenophobic?
The answer is apparently always, "At least one more."
It just like... look. If your religion has an explicit instruction of belief that it needs to take every other religion out there in the world, wipe them out, and replace them with itself, that religion is xenophobic. And the people who engage in the fulfillment of that process are xenophobic. It might not be as explicitly nasty a xenophobia as ethnic genocide, but it's still an instruction to commit cultural genocide.
This is a feature of lots of religions...
Not really. Out of the thousands of forms of religions in the world, there are three religions that actively attempt to spread and carry instructions to do so in their religious texts:
Christianity, Islam, and Baháʼí.
That's it.
There are two other religions that do spread out via proselytism (Buddhism and to some lesser extent Hinduism), but these are not intrinsic parts of their holy texts the way that those three have it.
Meanwhile, there are an estimated 10,000 distinct religions in the world, meaning that only 0.0003-5% of religions actively have the instruction to go out and spread themselves.
Now, it's a feature of nearly every Christian denomination, so if you conflate "religion" with "Christianity" like a lot of people do and think that all religions are just "Christianity with a different nameplate on the god figure", I can see why you'd be confused.
Witchy things to do with your ash
Put it above your door: If your ash comes from incense or an herb bundle, the ash shares the same correspondences and power as the herb. I’ve met some who think it’s even stronger, as it’s been activated. You can either use the bundle to make a light mark above a door frame or it can be done with a finger. This can be powerful protection, luck bringing, or love inducing, depending on your intent and correspondence
Use it in spells: Why get rid of something so powerful? As mentioned, the ash still has power and energy. Your correspondence is based on what was burned. You can use it in place of that herb if you’re out, or in addition.
Use it in anointing: While it’s often used in conjunction with oil, ash has a long history of being used in anointing. Burning holy herbs, and then using a finger to swipe cooled ash onto someone being anointed is a powerful piece of the ceremony
Bury it: A lot of witches, including myself, find that burying the remnants of a spell is incredibly powerful. It’s often seen as giving respect to the earth for the power it gives. The phrase ashes to ashes, dust to dust comes to mind. It’s essentially the ending of a spell, returning the ash to the earth
Ward your home: Sprinkling protective herbs and ash around the perimeter of your home can help ward against negative energy and evil spirits.
Mix it in to art: Did you know you can make your art magic? Through sigils, colors, intention and more. But one possibility is to mix a bit of ash into your paints or use it as a charcoal substitute
I once had a neighbor who was thoroughly convinced their indoor/outdoor cat never strayed further than a couple houses around. As proof, she put a GPS tracker and little camera on her cat. 24 hours later she had the proof she didn’t want. Her cat went as far as a mile away, into the nearby woods where their were coyotes and other predators that would a snack of her cat. Her cat crossed the interstate several times, went to a construction site, and various other places that had me surprised her cat was still alive.
The following week was full of them building a catio and enriching their home. The cat became an indoor cat and chilled out very happily in the catio. They spent the summer harness and leash training their cat as well.
Oh, and the cat killed over a dozen birds and didn’t eat any of them in the single day the owner tracked them with the camera and GPS. They had been going out daily for over a year. Imagine a cat killing 12 birds a day, everyday, for just a year. That devastates the local bird population and leads to the extinction of entire species.
Enrich your home, install a catio (you can get portable catios that fold up and fit in a closet), get a few cat trees/towers, play with your cat, and they’ll live long healthy lives. No worries about some random person killing them with poison or shooting them, no worries about them getting hit by a car, no worries about destroying the local ecosystem. My cats are 17 and 15 years old, 100% indoors their entire lives, and they’re happy.
Oh and since avian flu aka bird flu is spreading, please remember that it kills animals that eat the contaminated meat. That means if a cat kills an infected bird and eats it, they will get sick and die.
“Public libraries are such important, lovely places!” Yes but do you GO there. Do you STUDY there. Do you meet friends and get coffee there. Do you borrow the FREE, ZERO SUBSCRIPTION, ZERO TRACKING books, audiobooks, ebooks, and films. Have you checked out their events and schemes. Do you sign up for the low cost courses in ASL or knitting or programming or writing your CV that they probably run. Do you know they probably have myriad of schemes to help low income families. Do you hire their low cost rooms if you need them. Have you joined their social groups. Do you use the FREE COMPUTERS. Do you even know what your library is trying to offer you. Listen, the library shouldn’t just exist for you as a nice idea. That’s why more libraries shut every year
If this post persuades even one person to get a free library account and use it, my time on this hellsite will not have been spent in vain
When I got laid off from my long time job back in 2020, I had no current resume and no working home computer, just my phone. The library made it possible to write a resume and cover letter, apply for unemployment, apply for jobs and print out any required forms related to the above.
All for free. 100% free. I didn't pay a dime. I also decided that since I usually only read non picture books once, getting them from the library was the best way to do it and I don't have to spend 8$-20$ for a novel or try and find a safe free download of it.
Libraries baby! A public good! The library is fun and educational! Also at my library you can rent a Gieger counter!

Before she was born, I created a special altar box that consisted of her scan pictures, hand written notes on everything I wished for her ie: to always know she was loved, to be confident and kind etc, crystals to strengthen our bond, mementos from me and my partner etc etc
I also created a protection spell bottle for her and 3 hours later we were rushed into hospital because of a really traumatic labour emergency and she was born safely, exactly 8 hours after creating the protection jar.
I charge her bottles around my crystals after they've been sterilised, I have a very large piece of rose quartz that I visualise infusing her bottles with extra love.
I smoke cleansed her room thoroughly before I gave birth, to ensure her room didn't have any left over negative energy from the people who used it before her.
I trace 'sleep safe and sound' sigils on her face as she drifts to sleep.
I use a baby safe lavender scented pillow spray that has also been charged with rose quartz in her crib to protect her and ensure she has peaceful dreams.
We use lavender, vegan and cruelty free baby body wash and shampoo to promote good sleep.
I stir her porridge clockwise every morning to attract good luck and happiness.
I am in the process of transferring over some of my grimoire and book of shadows pages into a beautiful grimoire to hand down to her when she is older and if she follows my path.
I am creating new traditions and routines for each Sabbat and Esbat that she can join in with me when she is a little bit older.
I will be creating a blessing for her bedroom to banish negativity and bad dreams.
I provide her with plenty of healthy baby foods for lunch with different herbs and ingredients that correspond with the intent of the day. Of course I stir anticlockwise to banish negativity and bad moods if she's particularly grumpy or fussy, and then clockwise to promote happiness and a positive mood for the rest of the day.
I recycle all her baby food jars and use them to store herbs, potions and spells. (It's a very good budget friendly alternative to pricey glass bottles that are often far too small for my personal liking.)
And of course, I gave her a Witchy name that truly suits her beauty.
Of course I will incorporate so much more into her daily life as she gets older as my partner is super supportive despite not practising my beliefs, but these are what I can do now at least.
Thank you for reading. 🌛🌝🌜
