What makes Sony and Playstation extra greedy and stupid in going all digital is that what they want is a Steam/Nintendo super baby, ie, a purely digital walled garden. The problem is that they don't even have the infrastructure in place to have their own version of just Steam or Nintendo, let alone that super baby, so when the PS6 comes out, either everyone's just going to keep using their PS5 or flock to one of those other two (or both) depending on what's more important to them.
They can't be Steam because most people aren't going to pony up 1000+ bucks on a console and paid online just to get in the front door, and they can't be Nintendo because right now it's a lot more difficult for them to either make their own first party games or to get exclusives from third parties.
For that Nintendo bit, no matter what grievances get sent their way, they can safely ignore most of it because they got everything running so buttery smooth they can release a new exclusive game almost every month. Literally no one else in the industry can match that output.
Exclusives are what justifies a console's existence, and Playstation barely has any. Sony acquired a bunch of studios over the past several years for a fuckton of money and then mismanaged them to the point of laying almost all of them off without being able to get a goddamn game out of them first, so no first parties. As for their regular third party supports, they're either barely releasing games themselves as is (Naughty Dog and Insomniac) or flocking to Nintendo in hopes of fostering a stronger relationship. It says a lot that Square Enix decided to showcase the latest Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer in a Nintendo Direct rather than a State of the Play.
Consoles have died in the past because they were too expensive and/or they couldn't secure exclusives. The PS5 will be fine for now since a good amount of them are already out there and there a few games ready in the immediate pipeline, but no one's going to get a PS6 once it's out.
