Daily reminder
Watch this to learn how to put down toxic masculinity and internalized misogyny. As with “the kids these days are terrible” beginning circa prehistory (thanks Plato) this points to “men aren’t masculine anymore” and tracks it backward.
I keep saying nothing ever changes to those who know history.
Also don’t forget how much men being masculine and properly manly (for any global culture’s subjective definition of “masculine”) is tied to politics—especially the politics of empire.
Edward Gibbon wrote The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire in the 18th century, living in a different empire, and his cautionary argument was that Rome fell because Romans became effeminate (i.e., weak, lazy, passive, cowardly, frivolous). And his evidence was from Roman commentators of the period who were complaining, as Gibbon was, that men aren’t men anymore.
It’s all weird paranoid political misogyny. And it’s worth mentioning that Rome didn’t “fall”, it just shifted its locus of power to Constantinople. But that was in the decadent, effeminate East (yay, Orientalism!) so obviously the true manly mantle of the Roman Empire was passed to [insert European country name here].
Also it’s important to stress again that the definition of “masculine” behaviours varies widely across time and geography, but the obsession with a perceived lack of manliness in any current generation is a global historical phenomenon.
saw this on pinterest but i think it belongs here too
this will never not be important
Putting the term "Catholic guilt" on a high shelf where fandom can't reach it until everyone learns how to identify characters who are very very clearly coded as Protestant.

I love that the modern-day tumblr post equivalent of chain emails only requires me to reblog a relatively pleasant image instead of forward an email to a bunch of my friends and family members to quell my raging anxiety.
It’s a win win. I get a bit of hope, you get a cute birb photo
