SECRET RELATIONSHIP: muse a isn’t exactly the most popular person around school. didn’t have many friends, stayed out of the limelight, never attended parties but instead stayed home watching netflix alongside their hot box of pizza. but muse b is the star player of the soccer team, everybody’s best friend, and always in the public eye. they were polar opposites. so who would have ever guessed that muse a and muse b were together behind closed doors. their relationship worked well, the two were a great pair. but as the secret relationship lingered on, muse a was starting to want more from muse b. a label on their relationship. (based on the tv show awkward.)

DELINQUENT x OUTCAST: around town, everyone had a label. muse a was known as the outcast. sarcastic, witty, and abrasive. muse a chose their own path. very similar to muse b, the delinquent. intimidating, ill-tempered, and rumors flooding around them like crazy. one day, muse b was bragging about their capabilities of making absolutely anyone swoon. muse b’s friends challenged that statement, betting muse b that they were incapable of getting muse a to fall for them. muse b didn’t hesitate for a second. muse b persistently asked out muse a, although they had been rejected multiple times. while it started as a bet, muse b was slowly developing feelings for muse a. but what happens when muse b wins the bet and muse a discovers how their relationship really started? (based on the movies 10 things i hate about you and she’s all that.)

CHILDHOOD FRIENDS: ever since 7th grade, muse a and muse b had been inseparable. the two knew each other like the back of their hands. they saw each other run through petty middle school crushes, family hardships, and more. they argued, they laughed, they did absolutely anything and everything together. however, they were always just friends. freshman year of high school muse a had confessed the crush they developed on muse b. that confession changed their entire relationship. the summer into their sophomore year, muse b stopped talking to muse a. their friendship ended within a blink of an eye. they didn’t talk for years. until senior year, muse a got into a relationship. muse a’s significant other took them to a party where muse a would be introduced to a “very important person,” the best friend. muse a was nervous, hoping and praying for the approval. when they arrived, muse a was shocked to see that the infamous best friend was muse b. (based on shit that went down this one time.)

HATE/LOVE RELATIONSHIP: life for muse a and muse b consisted of constant bickering, malicious scheming, and an overall disastrous relationship. the two despised one another. muse a was cocky, flirtatious, and a heart breaker. but also charming, charismatic, and unpredictable at best. muse b was cynical, stubborn, and had a “say it how it is” mindset. but they were also intelligent, kindhearted, and beyond talented. people understood why the two were always butting heads and would often times joke that the two would end up getting married one day. taking into consideration they already acted like a married couple. muse a would gag and muse b would respond with a remark to bash on the other. people would always question why they wouldn’t just stay away from each other. but neither of them had an answer for that question. they always gravitated back to each other, even if they didn’t want to. ii. muse a is a well-instructed commoner, a humble person with a brilliant mind and dreams of being an inventor. they’re given the one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet with their country’s monarch and present a project to them so it may be financed. in the palace, they cross pathes with muse b, the monarch’s child who can seldom leave the palace. muse b takes personal interest in muse a and they keep finding excuses to meet, even with the knowledge that this love could never be.

"yo— uh, volví recientemente. unas semanas." con las manos metidas en los bolsillos de su chaqueta, sus dedos aferran las llaves del auto en un intento por contener el nerviosismo inusual que ahora lo envuelve. "¿qué hay de ti?" toma el atrevimiento de acercarse un paso. "¿has estado bien?"

un poco sobre él ─ nolan griffin. veintinueve. nació en un entorno caótico, con un padre ludópata y una madre demasiado buena por su propio bien. una estancia en la correccional hizo que cualquier aspiración por un futuro mejor terminara en el basurero y no le quedó más remedio que enlistarse en el ejército al salir. actualmente, lleva un año desde que fue dado de baja con honores a causa de una herida en la pierna que obtuvo en combate. es dueño de un bar y trabaja como voluntario con otros veteranos.

se aclara la garganta, despegando por primera vez la mirada apenas medio segundo, como si necesitara ordenar algo por dentro antes de volver a hablar. “sí, bien.” un resumen preciso si no profundizaba demasiado, ¿qué esperaba que le dijera?, sus hombros se relajan apenas al pronunciarlo, aunque el ceño se le frunce con fugacidad, gesto traicionero en medio de su propia reconstrucción interna. “¿tú?” pregunta entonces, como si realmente quisiera saberlo y así era. "¿has estado bien?" completa, más bajo, las demás preguntas se agolpan detrás de sus dientes, insistentes, punzantes. ¿por qué te fuiste? ¿qué te pasó? ¿por qué me dejaste? pero las contiene. las guarda. no es el momento. lo mira con algo que no es reproche, no todavía.

"entonces, vamos. mi auto está cerca" comienza a decir al tiempo que se inclina para alcanzar la agarradera de la maleta ajena. una parte de él se siente aliviado en el momento en que obtiene aquella respuesta positiva a su ofrecimiento. no ha mentido: se sentiría más tranquilo sabiendo que ella está a salvo y no varada en el aeropuerto a causa del clima; pero también existe una particular comodidad que vuelve a él tan pronto como la tensión parece dispersarse, si es que en algún momento realmente estuvo presente entre ambos. "bueno, para empezar porque son solamente media docena de catres— muy poco cómodos, he de decir" explica despacio, apuntando vagamente con su índice en dirección de a donde dirigirse una vez que se encuentran en la calle. "sin mencionar que todo el tiempo hay alguien pasando al otro lado de las ventanas, así que es bastante invasivo si no estás acostumbrado." no está seguro de cómo describirlo. lo cierto es que es parte de su entorno de trabajo, algo a lo que está acostumbrado desde hace años. "pero si te sientes más cómoda allá en vez de sola en mi casa, podemos ir también", finaliza, dejando decisión final en manos de la rubia justo en el momento en que sus pasos se detienen en la parte trasera de una camioneta aparcada junto a la acera.

amaia lo observa mientras explica, avanzando a su lado con paso tranquilo, como si la tormenta y el caos del aeropuerto no fueran con ella. cuando menciona los catres, las ventanas, la falta de privacidad, sus labios se curvan apenas más. “media docena de catres y público constante…” repite con falsa solemnidad, como si estuviera evaluando seriamente la propuesta. luego lo mira de reojo. "suena encantador." bromea. pero no hay burla real en su voz. solo esa ligereza habitual, esa capa que siempre interpone antes de decir algo que importe, porque la verdad es que hay algo más profundo dando vueltas en su mente.

se detiene cuando él lo hace, junto a la camioneta, y su mirada se suaviza apenas, lo suficiente como para que quien la conozca bien lo note. “no me incomoda la incomodidad, jordan.” dice con calma. "me incomoda incomodarte." admite finalmente aquella preocupación en forma de trabalengua. inclina apenas la cabeza, estudiándolo como si intentara descifrar cuánto de su ofrecimiento es obligación, por ser el mejor amigo de su hermano, y cuánto es elección. "así que iré a donde prefieras que esté." termina por ceder, esta vez no con la sonrisa de hermana menor que provoca por deporte sino con una más honesta.

"no lo digas así o me lo tomaré como un reto personal" advierte con algo de humor, incluso cuando no está en su naturaleza pulsar botones de otros sólo porque sí y que no está en sus planes fastidiar a la contraria sólo para probar un punto. un segundo después, no puede hacer más que dedicarle una mirada de silencioso y sincero agradecimiento, no sólo por la compañía que le otorga en ese momento, sino porque en esa frase hay la clase de entendimiento que sólo personas en sus respectivas posiciones podrían otorgar y es algo que él termina apreciando. "¿sabes? la idea de perdernos un rato suena demasiado atrayente justo ahora, así que…" da un par de golpecitos con la punta del dedo en el costado de su vaso, sin querer pensarlo mucho porque, considerando que cada aspecto de su vida es un total desastre en estos momentos, ¿qué más da? toma su teléfono junto con las llaves de su auto y se pone de pie. "sus deseos son órdenes, señorita kang. trae tu café y vayamos a golpear cosas" invita con un gesto de cabeza y el atisbo de una media sonrisa, a la espera de que ella lo imite.

deja que gracia y familiaridad se asienten en su estómago, ambas casi al mismo nivel; una sensación relativamente extraña para alguien que se empeñaba en mantenerse, de una u otra forma, inalcanzable a cualquier cosa que le hiciera bajar sus ya acostumbradas barreras. su mirada va un momento a su nombre escrito sobre el vaso, permitiéndose también, por un pequeño instante, que el entorno y las situaciones aconteciendo al mismo tiempo distraigan sus pensamientos. al menos hasta que la voz del pelinegro la trae de vuelta. entonces alza la vista; la duda se refleja en sus facciones mientras lo observa actuar, y algo parecido al entusiasmo termina por ocupar ese espacio, elevando apenas las comisuras de sus labios con sutileza. quiere preguntarle si habla en serio, pero en su lugar se contagia de aquel impulso y se levanta de la mesa. "¿sabes que no podrás retractarte luego, verdad?" cuestiona, alzando la mirada para encontrarse con la ajena, como si quisiera detectar en sus ojos algún atisbo de arrepentimiento que necesitara descartar.

"Yo sé que no eres tonto, Jeff, pero a veces pareciera que actuaras como uno a conveniencia—" esperó algunos segundos, sólo para ver cuál sería su defensa esta vez. Sin embargo, cambió de opinión a medio camino porque exhaló con fuerza a través de la nariz, girando sobre los talones para continuar con lo que hacía: meter su ropa en la lavadora. "Sólo quiero sentir que escuchas las peticiones que te hago."

Aunque trataba de ser firme, le dolió pensar en que algo tan pequeño podía gatillar una discusión. No es que quisiera discutir con él, es que... estaba cansada. Han sido muchas horas en el laboratorio, además de que su tesis doctoral no está yendo tan bien como le gustaría. Lo último que esperaría es que todo esté en orden en casa. ¿Era un dolor de cabeza para él? ¿Estaba exigiendo demasiado?

"¿Es tan agotador vivir conmigo?" Hizo una pausa en sus movimientos, todavía dándole la espalda.

su respiración inevitablemente se vuelve pesada mientras trata de gestionar aquella sensación de insuficiencia que lo había acompañado toda su vida, aun cuando intentara esforzarse por encajar. no quería discutir, le cansaba; de hecho, era conocido por huir de tantos conflictos como le fuese posible, y tampoco era algo de lo que estuviera orgulloso. "te escucho, soph." dice, apretándose los ojos con el pulgar y el índice, como si necesitara despejar su mente. "fue un accidente, no noté que se me cayó cuando saqué mi ropa del lavarropas." se explica una vez más, y la culpabilidad aflora al escuchar la pregunta. por supuesto que no, nada de ella era agotador; quizás solo lo era la mezcla de ambos, que en pequeños momentos parecía imposible. toma una bocanada de aire y se atreve a acercarse a ella, poniendo sus manos sobre sus brazos, queriendo medir antes cuánto tenía permitido acercarse antes de cerrar un abrazo a su alrededor. "lo siento." dice nuevamente, pero ahora su tono es más suave, tranquilo. "me esforzaré en no dejar mis cosas por ahí."

aún no habían pasado siquiera las primeras veinticuatro horas desde su regreso y ya estaba pensando en cómo el aire del pueblo siempre le había parecido pesado, tan difícil de digerir que, cuando era más chica, solía atribuirle a eso que las horas pasaran tan lento y le resultaran tan agotadoras; como si la realidad con la que debía lidiar dentro del hogar familiar no fuese una razón válida para querer salir de allí a cualquier costo, incluso cuando ese costo le había resultado excesivamente caro. sentía que nada había cambiado desde su última vez allí, incluso cuando su regreso esta vez era algo así como voluntario y su figura materna ya no era parte activa de su vida diaria; la realidad actual no era mucho mejor.

aprovechó la entrada de la noche para salir de casa, caminar y hacer las compras necesarias para volver a equipar un refrigerador que parecía no haberse abastecido de nada más que lo mínimo indispensable para sobrevivir quién sabe por cuánto tiempo. manos aferradas al volante del carrito de supermercado mientras repasaba visualmente lo poco que aún había dentro de él, tan ensimismada que tuvo que detenerse en seco al cruzar al siguiente pasillo para evitar un desastre mayor; no muy segura de haberlo evitado cuando la sola presencia contraria la dejó paralizada por un par de segundos. "remi." alcanzó a musitar en reconocimiento, más para sí misma que para la contraria. "hola." saluda finalmente, corto, casi escueto, pero con una sonrisa inesperada alzando comisuras recordando que último encuentro no había estado marcado por ningún tipo de drama, al menos no en el exterior. la frase cae entre los dos y se queda ahí, suspendida. andy no aparta la mirada de las facciones ajenas; al contrario, la sostiene, como si necesitara confirmar que no hay exageración, que no es otro rumor mal contado sobre su hermano, y al mismo tiempo le mira como única fuente de apoyo en la que cree que podría sostenerse ante tal escenario. sabe que no se lo diría de esa forma si se tratara de una mentira y algo dentro de su pecho tiembla, arde, y se extiende por todas sus extremidades ante esa convicción, dejándola tan tensa que siente que puede quebrarse en mil pedazos, cual cristal, en cualquier momento.

la voz ajena suena como un eco dentro de su cabeza, otra sensación extraña cuando siempre había sido una de las más claras y cálidas dentro de su memoria. "¿quién te lo ha dicho?" se atreve a preguntar, con temblor apoderándose incluso de su tono, sin escapatoria...como siempre.
