Apparently picking a table on one of the higher floors of the library and at the back was the right call. Peter had barely sat down and started reading the chapter he had no time to even think about the night before when Gwen found him, "What? No, of course not." he insisted, looking around to make sure that no one else was around to hear or pay attention. News had started circulating around campus about the time he got to the library, catching bits and pieces of it from people he walked past. He didn't think he split lip and fading black eye were really helping him out on this one either, not when Gwen knew who was the one in the suit that had made the front page of apparently several newspapers and sites.

Once he was sure that no one was close enough to overhear he looked back at her and kept his voice quiet, "It wasn't even that bad, really, I'm fine. Look I'm here for class and everything." with an empty cup of coffee and an energy drink already pulled out next to it, sure, but Peter was well enough to make it to classes that day. He was in better shape than he thought he was last night. Or that morning, he guessed, by the time he'd given up on searching and collapsed in his dorm for a couple of hours of sleep, "I had to try and follow him, what was I supposed to do? Just let a lizard tear through Time Square and hope the police didn't shoot him?" a lizard who was a lot bigger than the last one back on Liberty Island, unfortunately, which meant way bigger teeth and claws.

Peter was really, really glad that it was cold enough to be wearing a jacket.

Gwen has never spent money on a physical newspaper until today, because she'd seen the headline (Spider-Menace terrorizing city with help of giant lizard!) and his picture in the suit on the front page and knew she had to say something about it. She'd been mostly avoiding using her newfound powers for a reason, her face being plastered on the morning news being the top. She's holding it up for emphasis as she approaches the table he picks on post-fight days.

"Are you kidding me, Pete? You look like you've been in a domestic!" She's whisper-yelling as she throws the paper down on top of his reading. "All it takes is one person doing the math and you're screwed!"

She puts her bookbag down none too gently in one of the empty seats at the table and sits down across from him, roughly pulling her own textbook out.

"You could have let the Avengers deal with it! Or any one of the other superheroes in this city that don't have class and homework to do!"

This was exactly why he hadn't wanted them to find out. Any of them. Not Gwen, or MJ, or Harry. This fear and worry, that realization that the person swinging around in the mask every day, every night, was really him. That Spider-Man was really Peter. That was where the bruises would come from, the cut lips, the scrapes on his arms or his back, why he was always so tired in the mornings. It was him being thrown through windows and into the pavement, being grabbed by the throat or shot at, on the bridge trying to pull the car up by a web before it could crash into the river, swinging away from a scene clutching his side as the police finished up. Peter didn't want them to have that kind of fear for him, to watch the news and have the sickening knowledge of who was really on the screen.

He hated that Gwen knew now as much as he was relieved that she did. That he didn't have to explain why he hadn't moved in with any of them yet and stayed in his crummy apartment, why he was tired, where he had been. It was a relief to not have to hide it from her anymore, sometimes. Until he barely had a chance to wash up and change before she was there, and he wondered how much of the fight she'd seen. How scared she would have been if she had seen any of it. Of course he'd let her come inside, of course he'd say through her seeing the scrapes and the bruises and the cut to the side of his face. It was just that he hated that she knew to worry now.

Three people counted on him coming home every night, two of them didn't even realize it and Peter hated seeing that Gwen did, "I know." he said, reaching over for her hand to hold it and trying to ignore the way that his shoulder burned and hurt with the movement. The ice pack was sitting next to him forgotten, "I know and I did, Gwen. I came back, I'm home and I'm okay."

She had seen it. Ever since she'd found out, she'd been checking the news hourly to see what he was going to get into. What supplies she needed to stock in his apartment. Her apartment. She hasn't gotten the chance to sneak them into MJ or Harry's apartments yet. She will.

Just like she'll always be here, right after a fight, right after Peter crawls his way home, to nurse his wounds and reassure herself that he's lived through another fight, another building, another car, another sidewalk. She can't keep him from doing it -- it would be selfish of her to make him stop and let the city get destroyed and thrown into chaos because there's no one to protect it.

Gwen can hate it all she wants, but she doesn't get to control him. So instead she squeezes his hand back and leans over to grab the ice pack to set it back on his shoulder. She kisses his cheek after.

"I'm scared, Peter. I can't ask you to stop. I know how important he is -- you are to the city. But you're important to us, too. I don't know how to exist in a world where you're not here at the end of the day. Where I can't show up to your apartment at three am with bodega cake to celebrate your birthday. Where I can't meet you at the airport after a tour, or pull you into my dressing room before a show." She swallows around the lump forming in her throat. "I love you. I just need you to be here."

"Truthfully, Erik, I wouldn't know. There was the one time you sent a bullet through my spine. And then that time you dropped that stadium down and I got trapped under a big steel beam. Or that time you nearly turned my plane inside out. I also remember that time in Egypt. Need I go on?" Oh if Erik is going to be mean about it - then so can he.

"Ouch." He probably deserved that one. He smiles, a little, ducking his head. This was always the way, with them. The one constant in his life. After all the people he's lost - they've lost, at least they'll always have this. Being vicious to each other. Erik crosses his arms and turns his smile on Charles. "Is this all we are to each other now, Charles?"

The message that he'd received back didn't feel any more encouraging, the sound of the voice mail was bad enough. When he'd gotten to the apartment earlier it had seemed like Harry might have been drinking already, if how easily he was able to get another glass for himself poured and ready had been anything to go off of. The message left sounded like more of that bottle was gone by now, that Harry was past angry and just spiraling instead and Peter still had no idea what he'd say once he got there. He just knew that he had to go over, whatever the reaction was going to be later, he had to go over now.

[Harry 4:37pm]: I don't want you to die either [Harry 4:37pm]: we'll figure something out, okay? [Harry 4:38pm]: seriously ten minutes tops and I'll be there I promise

Faster if he had any real say in the matter, and that ten minutes was really just to make the subway lie seem at least halfway believable. Depending on how much Harry really did already drink, Peter wasn't sure that actually mattered. He still tried to hurry, pulled the hat down low and pulled the hood of his jacket up and went as high as he could on the webs to avoid being spotted out of the suit. His chest was tight and his nerves were on edge to the point that it felt like they fired off with stress and warnings just because he was breathing. Research and spiders and blood and Harry spinning around and around each other until his head felt so full Peter was sure it was going to burst from the pressure. Harry didn't want to die, Peter didn't want him to die, and he should have said something when Harry asked him to come to Oscorp and showed him that video of their dads together. Should have swallowed back the fear and the nerves just spit Spider-Man out there on the table to talk.

Should have carried him the last two blocks that he walked, and up the elevator in a blur and brought him to the apartment door to finally knock on, "Harry?...Har open up, please?"

Harry ditches his phone after Peter's last message, choosing to lay on the couch instead. It's not like he locked his door, anyways. The door guy knows Peter. He knows to let him up.

Harry sighs and puts his hands over his face and finds that he's crying, unwilling to face and accept the fact that he's dying and there's nothing he can fucking do about it.

There's nothing he can do about it. Right?

He brushes against one of the sores on his neck on accident and hisses when the pain radiates from it. His dad had lived longer than Harry knows he will. There had to be some way, right?

He wipes his tears and stands up, eyes catching on his desk, where his computer, with access to Oscorp's files, was. And then there's a knock on the door, and he jumps.

"It's -- it's open, Pete," he calls, grabbing the log in cube from the coffee table and stepping up to the desk. He's ignoring the way his head spins and his legs feel slightly unstable under him. It's not important right now. His dad had to have been working on something.

Wanda let him cling to her, remembering briefly how he'd grabbed her clothes as he cried as a babe in her arms. "I'm right here, baby, I'm not going anywhere." She promised, one hand soothing his hair from his face as the other re-wove reality to her will, slowly commanding the skin to stitch itself new and the blood to stop flowing. "You're being so brave, sweetheart, just keep breathing nice and steady for me, that's all you need to do right now." She told him gently, trying to stay calm for him.

Billy's fingers tightened in her shirt, bracing against the pain as she works her magic. He takes a shuddering breath in, trying to do what she said. He gasps again as a sharp pain lances through him, tears running down his cheeks. "Trying. Hurts so bad."

"Who, me? Of course I do. I'm the universe's second favorite Gwen. It's not going to let me die." This coming from someone who just fell onto the sidewalk after getting flung so hard into the side of a building that there's a crater where she hit it. Gwen glances up at the crater as bits of rock fall behind her, wincing as she tries to sit up. "You should definitely not be here right now. No offense.."
