narration notes: maren herself is an unreliable narrator. constantly moving houses and a terse home life have made her socially naive, but she is quite often deluding herself about her innocence in other situations. she struggles with ownership of what she is and attempts to pretend she has no choice in the matter. she seems to mourn the fact that she isn’t living a normal life more than she mourns the fact she kills people. it’s a balancing act of disgust with her inability to be human and a bone deep curiosity about her own morbid acts. "memories distort themselves, turning over into truths that are easier to live with."

BACKSTORY & VERSES.

maren yearly is born on may 30th, 1971, in the heart of minnesota. her parents, frank yearly and janelle shields. within the year, janelle disappears. the father and daughter make an awful pair: there is a mutual love between the two, but there is also guilt, and anger, and so much disappointment. time passes and passes in a murky spiral, and frank yearly finally reaches his limit. he can no longer care for the splitting image of his former wife. he disappears on the night of maren's eighteenth birthday, leaving his daughter with only an envelope full of cash, her birth certificate, and a tell-all letter.

canon: in 1974, maren's father comes home to find his daughter drenched in blood, surrounded by the bones of the babysitter entrusted to watch her. the scene is gruesome, horrific. it has to be a cult killing, some sort of ritualistic violence. frank yearly thinks this until he fishes the eardrum from his infant daughter's mouth. this is the first time the yearly's must hastily move. the second is the boy at summer camp. there's a third, a fourth, a fifth. what is his daughter? why won't she stop? why isn't she normal? her dad abandons her the second he morally can, up and gone by the morning of her 18th birthday. it's 1988, and maren has no one, knows no one, so she flees minnesota. she starts a cross country road-trip to find her mother, a woman she only knows as a name on a birth certificate. along the way, she meets other eaters. the creepy old man, sully, and the charming lee. maren ditches sully, she falls in love with lee. the couple tracks down her mother, only to find janelle institutionalized for her cannibalistic habits. maren is horrified to meet her mother, to see anyone so gnarled, delirious, blood-thirsty. lee's father was an eater too. are they ever going to escape their parent's fates? lee and maren break-up, only to come back together. they eat a college girl, take over her life, borrow time portraying a normal young couple. the eater sully eventually attacks the couple in their apartment. lee saves maren from assault, but is fatally stabbed in the process. maren tries to save lee, but he's bleeding so much, and he is holding her mouth to his flesh. eat, he tells her, and eat she does. alone again, maren flees the state.

the vampire chronicles: it's 1988. freshly abandoned by her emotionally distant father, maren starts out on a road-trip across america to find her mother. after days of searching, she finds that her mother has been institutionalized. maren visits her mother in the hospital. janelle is nonverbal, missing part of her hand, wild eyed in the dark room. the starving mother attacks the daughter, and through a violent scuffle, turns maren. the daughter escapes, if you can call it that. she wallows, and suffers, and wanders in a confused daze for weeks. maren is taken in by a kind boy, who offers her a couch and food, but it is not enough. she's hungry for blood, and she can't stop herself. the boy is drained and so is she. maren has to keep moving to keep a foothold on her sanity, travelling through the expansive american-south by night, killing mindlessly and running endlessly. she encounters sully, a fellow vampire, who harasses and stalks her for months. maren kills a college student and takes their place in the student housing, taking advantage of the strange schedules and non-stop visitors. she's avoiding the sun, and she's well fed, and she's doing her best with what she's got, when sully attacks. maren barely survives, but she kills the vampire sully, and flees the college.

whenever crystal bids him a temporary farewell, his body remembers its capacity for hunger.  sweat-slick and quivering, jesse fails to fend off the mounting deluge of paranoia.  collects cigarette butts for sustenance.  stumbles onto familiar front porches, reiterates the same stale one-liners with a punchline that amounts to:  'sup mom, 'sup dad, your favorite delinquent is back on the straight and narrow.  of course, the tenuous amity between two warring factions withers away the second he capitulates to lesser evils.  (  a joint, a pill, a neurotoxic neutralizer.  once the family disappointment, always the family disappointment.  )  of course, he’s caught red-handed, apprehended, shut out faster than he can concoct a plausible excuse.  spare him the sermonizing  —  jesse is a victim of his own invention.  a poster boy for self-fulfilling prophecies. 

hence, he’s sitting atop a duffel bag of bare necessities, knees curled into his chest.  blue eyes bloodshot, flitting from crosswalk to crosswalk to the shadowy outline of her outstretched arm.  jesse jerks his chin up, manages a hoarse thanks, and almost tears the takeaway container apart in his haste.  “  mhm.  ”  crunch goes a chip.  “  guess you’re not?  ”  she strikes him as a seasoned backpacker.  wind-swept, west-bound, hair haloed by the unforgiving sun.  it’s fitting that her tourist attraction is a local poison peddler.  welcome to albuquerque.  familiarize yourself with our wonderfully diverse demographics:  dope fiends evading their domineering fathers.  

then, like a lightbulb sparking after days  (  weeksmonthsyears  )  of disuse, jesse’s bravado rears its brazen head.  “  hey, hold up.  one of my boys should be here in, like, fifteen.  dropping off some fine herbage, if you catch my drift.  ”  he omits the info that combo’s stash of skunk is no joke.  “  i’ll smoke you out, we’ll share this, and you’ll tell me what brings you to buttfuck, new mexico.  deal?  ”

every joint screams in exhaustion as you step on and off the curb, kick at the ground. you had nothing but the earth to sleep on last night and your body is protesting the mistreatment. there's no point to it, the endless wandering, the pull to go west. you've got nothing behind you and nothing ahead of you. does he? does this stranger, sitting atop all he owns, have your same fate? what he has is kind eyes. you're realizing you had less than pure intentions coming over here. the leftovers could have been tonight's late dinner or tomorrow's breakfast or left in the trash, for fucks sake. but for some god-awful reason, you're making conversation with some guy on the curb. (you always have a reason. that's the god-awful part. your dad knew it, and you do too, somewhere in the depths of your head. you always know what you're doing.)

he seems like the type that no one would miss. you recognize the look from the mirror, the body language of the lonely. his spine curves like it longs to touch his hips, his shoulders collapsing inwards as well. your head shakes no, errant hair emphasizing the sentiment. no, you're certainly not from here. you're a confused combination: reluctant and penitent, starving and vicious. dawdling has left you worse for wear. in kicking the pavement, you scuff the ever-thinning leather of your boots. you regret making the mark as soon it happens.

you can't tell if you like him. he talks through his chewing, and he propositions you to smoke weed with him in a preposterous string of slang, and that cannot possibly be enough to make him worthy of death. of being killed, by you. panic sears up your throat. his friends can’t see you. you scratch at your head, shifting your weight around on both feet, smile nice and hesitant. "i'm not really any good in groups." a moment of dead air. your next sentence is slow, careful, treading murky waters. there's a balancing act, a narrow tightrope to walk, caught between a visceral need to be honest and the necessity of him making his own interpretations. "do you know of anywhere less. . . crowded?"

"'m sorry." you avoid eye contact, slurring through the apology. you choose to bite your cheek, tooth in flesh, rather than comment on the blossoming dark blue below his lower lashes. surprise has heightened the reality of the situation, bringing into focus the sound of you running your index finger through the top of your yellowing novel, of grass and trees rustling, of a practice football game on the other side of the building. he's found your spot, behind the gym, the area that remains blissfully un-monitored until after sixth period. this is your escape, a haven from the self-made prison of social isolation. you are always taking two steps away from danger and ending up three steps away from normalcy. "i didn't think anyone would be here." dirt flies as you kick your shoe at the ground. you know of peter more than you know him. you had english together last year, sat two seats to his right. no one would be shocked if he forgot, or never even noticed. a hand raises to your mouth, subconsciously, nipping at the torn cuticle of your thumb. you like watching her read. she really gets lost in her books, like she's gone someplace else. left on your lonesome — but that's alright. 'cause once she's back to earth, sometimes you get an earful about the characters and the shit they get up to. what she thinks is gonna happen next or taking a guess at their backstories. she talks and you listen, 'cause you also like hearing her amped up about it, too. kinda makes up for the fact books bore you half to death.

but that's got nothing on when she's all up on you like this. when your personal space becomes hers; fitting together like the lost piece to a puzzle. it just makes sense. never felt like this with anyone else, not even rachel. she looks like a model out of them magazines 'cause of the sun and the hair in her face. naw, she looks prettier than those girls. your fingers linger on her mouth after brushing the strands off it. pointer pressing into her bottom lip. and then you're huffing when she puts the stray lash in front of yours, rolling your eyes before looking at her again (you've been staring at her this whole time). “ — i don't believe in that bullcrap, ” you tell her. since she does, you add “ y'can make it for me. ” a hand drapes over her wrist.

you're almost convinced there's something wrong with you, something other than the obvious. this whole thing between the two of you, the love that goes unnamed. it's driving you insane. you want him to know what you're thinking at all times. want him to know you like the back of his hand, despite knowing nothing good can come of it. what might be worse, you can’t tear your eyes away from the way his lips curve around his teeth. whatever your face does when you look at him is beyond you. a noise from your chest, something set loose from within you the second his finger meets your lips.

“i’ll make it a good one.” you concede easily, crinkling your nose. (if you were good, you’d wish him far from you. demagnetize him, pull him out from between your teeth. you’d wish him a pretty girl and a nice truck and an apartment with lots of windows. you’d wish away every moment he’s suffered, every second of self deprecation.) you turn your head, cheek instinctively inclined to touch cheek, and blow the fine wisp of hair into the wind. his hand warms your wrist through the whole motion. you wonder if your fingerprint made an imprint on the lash, a piece of him changed by the memory of your touch. you wish for more. more of lee, more time, more adoration you didn't earn. his wrist brushes your chin on your way down, gently butting your forehead into his collarbone. (there's something wrong about this, about you, about the way you notice how nice he smells, beneath the two buck shampoo and stolen cologne.) "what've you been thinking about?"

everything has a bit of the syrupy slowness of fading back into reality after getting consumed by a book. the sun covers you both like a blanket, the top strands of his hair lit up to a pink-tinged-white. you shake your head, attempted sternness ruined by a growing smile. your legs under you, back aching from the c-shape your spine has been making, shoulders tight from sun exposure. "that's not not moving, lee." you invade his space, knees shuffling further against his, putting an arm behind his hip and placing all your weight against it. the closeness is new, weird, potentially the thing you feel you've waited for your whole life, so you don't shy away from pressing your skin into his, your knee into his thigh. your hair blows in your face, strands sticking to the wetness of your lips, and you don't do anything to fix it. instead, your other hand prods his off his cheek, replacing his palm with your own, feeling out the shape of his face as he smiles. a dark lash sticks to the pad of your thumb, you hold it in front of his lips with an air of told you so that you haven't earned, eyes searching out his. "almost lost a free wish."

you stopped caring about this world a long time ago. partially out of a godlike ego, mostly out of purely not giving a fuck anymore. sometimes you wonder what the confinements of a four-by-four padded interior would do for yourself— for the rest of the world, too. would they be saved from the big bad that threatens them in the night? or would there be another monster to forever take your place? and by the looks of it, the answer is seated directly across from you. that's where the prying comes in; the drive to make the other better. you don't stick your nose in places it doesn't belong; you don't care enough to. (or, at least, that's what you tell yourself— because it's the truth. whatever you tell yourself is the truth, because you make your own truth. your own code.) there's more here that meets the eye, certainly to maren's eyes. that's what you'll keep telling yourself (and her) until you don't need to. until one of you bleeds dry. when you look at her, gaze staring directly into hers— you don't see a monster with gore still residing between her teeth or the dried specks of blood on her fingertips. you see a beautiful specimen. the same as you, two of one, a partner in the making. (who obviously still needed some work. lots of work.) noticing the plate of fries inching closer to you, slender digits reach down to snag one— placing it between your lips synonymous with a cigarette. (can't smoke inside the diner, at least the action is enough to send a signal a synapsis to the brain.) "prissy, careful— same fuckin' thing." muffled by the golden fry, your shoulders raise in a nonchalant shrug before leaning further back into the leather booth. taking maren's story into consideration, you let it rummage around in your brain before offering a response to her final question— quick and easy. "last night. cooked a roast 'n it was pretty damn good, too." beggar's clay chicken, the formal name in a cooking book, only yours was a beggar's clay leg. still quite juicy in comparison. enough time has passed that maren's words have marinated and your eyebrow arches, head cocking to the left. and then the right. when it straightens itself out, your mouth opens to speak. "wait, hold on— back up. ya' said ya' tried to stop and couldn't? what the fuck do ya' mean? like a fuckin' zombie or somethin'?"

you have never met other women like you. for some reason, you believed that there would be a stronger kinship. an immediate connection. normal girls have always been a more complex mystery, always just out of reach, a single father and a history of bloody sleepovers made sure of that. they've always been in a different category than you, a different species. but sienna, with creased dark hair and a mean set to her jaw, was born with the same gnawing hunger as you. how can she not care? how is she sitting there, cigarette between her lips, unafraid to talk about eating, unafraid to get told to put the cancer stick away? (your dad always called them that. you thought it was a cruel thing, to call something by its worst quality.) even with insults flying off her tongue, you want her to like you, a lot. you want her to think that you are a good person and that you didn't have a choice. you want her to show you new music and teach you new phrases and you want to learn how she stays full. you were raised to be polite, or rather, raised to keep your mouth shut. you always had to pick and choose the right time to ask a question, so you’re biting one back (what was in the roast?) when embarrassment scorches the tops of your ears. this has somehow never come up. there's some part of you that thought that this was all the same, animals act as animal does, and every thing has got to eat. pretenses fall to the wayside, anger slowly subsiding to a much worse, much more familiar feeling. a zombie. your face is hot. the unashamed eater thinks you're a monster. you appraise her, from the waist to the crown of her head. maybe you were born wrong, in every you could be. your dad thought so, or else he would be here, telling you not to talk to strangers. "you don't. . . you can stop?"

thinking about book to movie changes. the way the story changed from maren being an undeveloped maneater to maren being this like. queer creature. the fact that she seems to eat men and women actively, the lack of comment about lee at the carnival, the decision to introduce her eating with her friends finger in her mouth. generally i hate when media make women gentler or more likable but something about getting rid of the girl boss undertones and making the story revolve around the queerness of these two people in a world they aren’t supposed to exist in. emphasizing the feeling of being awful and alone and hard to handle because you haven’t been shown that others like you exist yet. the way lee’s role changes in marens story. the way your first queer relationship is learning the limits of what the world will accept from you, learning how others like you live when it’s just people in the know. in the movie, lee has met other eaters and he acts as a guide for maren through the non-eater and the eater world. also the change from maren telling lee not to kiss her for the first time because she can’t control her hunger. to them being incredibly physical w each other and common law married and lee has to hold her over his chest at the end. like ohhhh my god luca you get it banging on the glass rn

lip doesn't flinch at the warning. instead, the corners of his eyes crinkled in amusement, the threat bouncing off him like he'd heard it all before— because, in truth, he has. the southside of chicago hasn't taught him much about respect for property lines, but it sure as hell taught him how to manage a bluff. especially one of maren's. "you gonna' shoot me?" he quips, hands burying themselves deep in the pockets of his worn-out jeans. a half-cocked smirk plays on his lips, eyes glancing around— taking in the lay of the land. not much of a strategic retreat if things went south, but then again, he wasn't one to back away from a challenge. [even if it was being threatened on a patch of dirt no more valuable than the gum stuck to the bottom of his shoe.] "look, i'm not here to cause trouble. i'm just looking for something i lost last night." the 'something' was purposefully left vague; he wasn't in the habit of showing his cards unless he absolutely had to. he wasn't a snitch. in his world, information was a form of currency, and he was momentarily bankrupt.

you gonna shoot him? you set the shotgun down by the coatrack, a prop back in its rightful place. you don't actually need it, anyways. the neighborhood has gunshots and domestic disputes and chaos enough to let you pretend you aren't the worst thing in the city. "maybe." your voice does a poor job of delivering the joke, but you open the screen door nonetheless. you're getting comfortable, set in your new little life, and you have been good for as long as you've been here. you've got a job and friends and maybe even a future, if you can keep it together. lip is somehow mixed up in this. you, the city, the chaos. he reminds you of those boys in school that acted as though you didn't exist, but really just had a slower orbit back around than the others. all the reckless ones make their way to you, eventually. if you weren't what you are, you might appreciate that. enjoy a healthy dose of the good kind of trouble. "you look like walking trouble." you often dream of pitchforks and hunting parties and divine retribution and yet, you live amongst temptation, welcome it into your home. the porch squeals like an animal when you step out onto it, letting sunlight splash across your skin. the hem of your dress skitters around your calves, antsy in a moment of breeze. your head tilts, body language always just this side of animalistic. ravenous curiosity has a history of beating out your better judgement. “what'd you lose?"

she hates these types of people. ones who ignore the beauty of their crimes, letting the canvas flush down the drain. they remind her of the mormons who'd breach purecliff every so often. fucking freaks. maren's no different. sienna's eyes narrow, a tempest brewing in their depths as she absorbs the words spoken across the diner table. the ambient noise of clinking cutlery and muffled conversations fading into a hum, eclipsed by the weight of confession. maren's hands betray a nervousness that echoes the severity of her actions — her own hands, however, remain composed and clasped together on the table's surface, a testament to her disciplined restraint. “oh, i get it. yer one of those prissy bitches with the stick so far up her own ass, it's coming out of her own goddamn mouth.” the straw housing inside her chocolate milkshake is brought to her lips, a long sip taken — her gaze never leaving her companion. “i thought the whole fuckin' purpose of meetin' here was to talk 'bout it? ye wasting my time? 'cause that's not a good idea.”

you are not beyond making a face, eyebrows knitting together, frown pulling down your features. petulance suites you, not that you notice. her judgements are so sweeping. does she not see the patrons around you, or does she just not care? you can't imagine coming to that point, not caring about what you do or what others think, except really, you can. there'd be time for hobbies, for books, for coming home and listening to a nice beatles record. you could live out of the shadows, be larger than life, like the woman before you. squirming under her gaze, you cross your arms over your chest, pounding heart safe beneath your ribs. "i'm being careful, not . . . prissy." the ambiance unsettles you, but she's grated against your ego. (you're angry she thinks so little of you, like you're just a kid. like you weren't born awful. you suppress the horror that comes with desperately wanting to be impress her.) "fine, we can talk about it. i was hungry. and, i tried not to, but he got too close and i couldn't stop " you barrel on in one breath, pushing your plate closer to her as you sit up, elbows on the table. your fingers are freckled with dried blood. "what about you? when did you last eat?"
