happy valentine's day or whatever
so im sure like many other people i finally got rid of Pinterest
i basically just used it as a car idea board and outfits and saving creepypasta art but you literally can't comment anymore save for like the very occasionally pin
social media? social? what's that, clearly pinterest should be a shopping app apparently thanks mr. corporation
hey just a fat fucking heads up i may not post offen but i still check this account if you're gonna follow me and post this sort of thing please don't ever
like actually
musical satellite telemetry?
hey so like way way WAY off topic but some of you may remember my satellite posts a bit back and i'm still doing that sort of thing because it keeps my brain occupied, i was testing an antenna that's basically an X shape made for UHF (200-400ish MHz) and i picked up.. whatever this is
it seemed to disappear after i recorded it, the whole tone burst was only about 3 more seconds but i only noticed it about half way through. this seems like something exceptionally old or just a beacon signal, since from what i know about data modulation this is both too short and too slow to be much of anything. its reminiscent of transit 5b5 almost, but definitely isn't. i'm FAIRLY certain it is a satellite because of the significant Doppler curve (esp visible by me chasing it with the tuner window) i received this around 10:33 AM in north america, ohio specifically. 4.2 kHz bandwidth, FM
throwing it on here as a hail mary because i've never seen anything even remotely similar before, will continue to look for it again
(the image was stretched by playing the recording back at half speed with a high waterfall framerate)
update: the satellite source is Barry-2, or OTP-2
its the fucking KSP theme.

a small farewell to the NOAA POES program (polar orbiting environmental satellites)
a program lasting from 1970-2025, spanning over 20+ (technically, counting ones that were in a polar orbit operated by NOAA that didn't carry the POES name yet) satellites sending weather data used to likely save countless lives as well as give people like me the ability to see the earth from space as a direct download from a satellite with VERY little money in equipment and spurring interests in amateur satellite reception for who knows how many people in the world as well. thank you to the operators who kept these going throughout their many issues over the years and were able to convince the powers that be to keep them going for just a little longer over the last few years. to end off, here's a handful of my many good receptions (mostly from 15, i always had issues recieving 19) and with the final image being my first coherent image that was received simply by recording the audio from a handheld radio while tracking with an antenna i made of trash. alongside that, a small video with a recording of the sound of the APT transmitter.
seeya, space cowboy!
need to fall down this rabbit hole immediately.
personal recording of it i made earlier today with an old outdoor directional FM radio antenna. to actually describe what's being heard, the oscillating/changing jingly tones are analog telemetry with a lower sub-carrier below that you can barely kinda hear with a deeper sound. the background ticking/triple click(?) sound is the PCM (pulse code modulation) or in normal terms, the digital portion of the telemetry signal.
the actual navigation hardware on this satellite failed 19 days after launch in 1964 (part of the early NNSS or navy navigational satellite system constellation) , but since then it's been dutifully making this silly noise for literally 61 years and shows no signs of stopping. ya' gotta love it
need to fall down this rabbit hole immediately.
PLEASE listen to these fucking sounds (credit)
something ive been up to in my boredom is looking into stuff like this as kind of an avid radio person, someone mentioned it in the comments but this is transit 5b5 or 5e5 (JPL seems to have gotten their names mixed in the launch documents) but it's a 60s GPS precursor satellite that is, as far as anyone knows the oldest still transmitting satellite, more interesting is that it's still modulating telemetry data into the carrier signal. a lot of old satellites are just transmitting a carrier tone which is just a solid sound with no information.
satellites that come back to life are interesting in it of themselves since battery technology will eventually open short and the solar panels will get direct current from the sun and turn the satellite back on. one of the oldest functional amateur radio repeater satellites (AMSAT Oscar-7) also still works because of this
y'know i think it's important parents somehow learn the importance of just engaging with their kid if they talk about something they're interested in to them, like i hate to be the bearer of bad news but repeatedly trying to engage to only be met by "mhm, that's cool can you go do [x]" or other stuff that just immediately brushes it off is how your kids stop fucking talking to you lmao
what is your favorite vocal stim I need to know cause mine is
"ew what is this throw this away." "dude I can't it's not mine I'm holding onto it for my uncle until he's out of the hospital." "hello handsome." "ewwwwww"
i had to look it up cause i had no idea where it actually came from but clay davis from The Wire going "SHEEEEEEEEIT"
"You can call me Toby...heh...everyone really calls me ticci Toby.."
I am not calling you by your street name Tobias
after eons of searching for an aot military police jacket the fuckin stars aligned and i came across a very kind lady on eBay who had one for sale for like $20, and while it's not one of the fancy handmade ones im still over the moon
it seems like you can only ever find the survey corps jackets, every manufacturer said the other two be damned lol
