fear no mort take: rick pinning his photo of morty from his wallet on the fear hole board represents his letting go of his greatest fear, which is his dependence on morty

at the end of the ep, rick and morty walk out of the fear hole room. rick sprints back toward the hole alone. by mirroring precisely how morty went in the hole at the start of the episode, this seems like it's setting rick up to go in and face his greatest fear. instead, rick pauses, closes his eyes, and takes a beat, perhaps coming to a sort of decision.... before pinning the photo and walking away.

when he first saw the hole, he admitted he didn't "trust it" to overcome his fears. he decided to face it himself, instead. keeping the photo with him at all times was a sign of his dependence, and he chose to let it go by literally leaving it on this random bathroom wall he's never returning to.

fake-hole-rick explicitly faces his fear of letting go of diane, but much more relevant to who real rick is now is his fear of letting go of morty. another nice parallel is between rick and morty's fears: they each try to overcome their fear of their dependence on the other. morty was successful in overcoming his fear, because he left the hole and it, uh, fed on the fear or whatever. whether rick was successful in facing his fear, though, is unclear. much more likely is that this is the first time he identifies this as his deepest fear, possibly setting up future character development

The tdac finale reminds me of the Rick and Morty episode where Rick is revealed to have had unrequited feelings for Bird Person. Yeah, the episode didn't explicitly have Rick say "I am romantically in love with BP." But it was so heavily implied that it might as well have.

Yet I saw all these (presumably straight) fans twits themselves into knots to justify how it was actually totally platonic guys and you're all reading so much into it. Because even though Rick is stated to be pan, a large portion of the fan base can't accept, no matter how blatant, that their Cool Sarcastic Male Anti-hero archetype could be attracted to a male.

The pushback against transfem Jax feels EXACTLY the same.

Cuz, like, the signs are there. I saw it as soon as Ribbit puts on the bow. I'm sorry, but despite the 200 reddit comments trying to claim otherwise, putting an opposite sex gender marker on a friend after he shares how his mom mocked him for sharing a deeply personal secret, and saying "your secret is safe with me" isn't normal cis male friend behavior. Occum's razor and all that. Isn't She Lovely plays over a montage primarily of Jax, with only some Pomni. And there's plenty more than that. People called it as soon as episode 5. Point is, it was there in the text without Goose's confirmation.

But people can't accept it. Because Jax is the same mold as Rick: cool snarky asshole Anti Hero. And that is a male straight archetype, thanks. People really don't want to reflect on what it could mean if that beloved cultural icon is anything other than a cis man.

Because idk, maybe then they'd have to learn to respect or God forbid relate to someone who isn't straight or cis. Or that the "cool snarky guy" might not be who he seems on the surface.

i don’t think the charlastor shippers realise just how bad drawing gore art of a lesbian character in a canonical, major same-sex relationship being beheaded was. the implications of it, the history of discrimination against same-sex couples. of course that’s going to leave a black mark on their reputation in a queer fandom of shippers who actually appreciate same-sex ships as much as the heteronormative world glazes guy-girl ships

They don’t understand why it’s bad because they have severe internalized homophobic bias that they refuse to unpack lol. They genuinely think that someone calling their ship hetslop is the same as the rape and gore art they made of Vaggi and that both should be condemned as equally bad. That combined with their fandom’s eternal martyr complex ensures they will never fully own up to how fucked up that entire situation was.

At the end of the day though they’re only shooting themselves in the foot. As more queer fans enter the fandom they’ll learn about the fucked up harassment charlastor shippers have done, see that they have zero remorse for it, and avoid their weird little cult so they can focus their creative energy on the canon queer couples. Their numbers will dwindle and soon all that’ll be left is an echo chamber of the worst bigots this fandom has to offer. And the only people that will be responsible are themselves lmao.

staticsilence but vox isn't actually any less of a freak about alastor, it's just that for the first time he's genuinely committing himself to not touching the hot stove that is his own maladaptive obsession and doing a surprisingly good job of it, but that doesn't make it feel any less like he's sawing a limb off every time Alastor shows up on his metaphorical and/or literal doorstep telling him that this whole floundering indifference bit is getting old and Vox just has to. Not react. He's succeeding but at great personal cost. And the fact Vox is obviously just as emotionally vulnerable as he's always been even if he's choosing to be smarter about it just encourages Alastor that much more to be devastatingly vicious in all his attempts to break Vox's composure. so vox continues to be slowly gutted and alastor keeps digging himself further in a pit of his own making and the vees feel agonizingly helpless to change the situation and everyone at the hotel would really just like to not have to deal with the vees anymore and no one has a good time ever
