Itās not like us⦠itās unlike us. I donāt know what it wants, or if it wants, but itāll grow until it encompasses everything. Our bodies and our minds will be fragmented into their smallest parts until not one part remains⦠annihilation.

Annihilation (2018) [dir. Alex Garland]
āThere are some people who donāt want to deal with the fact that we are not forever. Some people decide to live life to the fullest. And there are some who are in the middle, who havenāt decided. Josie is one of those people. When she goes into the Shimmer and starts to submit to it, what she realizes is that thereās nothing to be afraid of. She embraces it. Thatās why sheās the one who gets most integrated into the space.ā āTessa Thompson on her characterās death in Annihilation (2018)

I think as she was dying part of her mind became part of the creature that was killing her.
āWe knew we wanted it to be beautiful and disturbing, often concurrently within the same shot. InĀ the end, a lot of it was just from nature. We found images that were atmospherically relevant. One I remember was of a vapor trail behind an airplane, and in the sort of vortices, light was reflecting through the water droplets and creating rainbow shapes. That became relevant to how we created the look of The Shimmer. Another was a tree that was covered in thousands, hundreds of thousands of spider webs. The spider webs in the branches made the tree like a tree, but not a tree, and that sort of became the crystal trees at the end of the film. It was that kind of thing.ā ā Director Alex Garland on the inspiration behind The Shimmer in Annihilation (2018)
Itās not destroying⦠Itās making something new
- It was dreamlike. - Nightmarish.Ā - Not always. Sometimes it was beautiful.

The Shimmer is a prism, but it refracts everything. Not just light and radio waves. Animal DNA, plant DNA, all DNA.
