trying to explain to my therapist that i have a lot of feelings about asymmetrical, hierarchical brothers-in-arms relationships but am also a quaker who doesn't approve of either hierarchies or fighting
brothers without arms, because we're pacifists,
that post about praise/punishment kinks being bad pedagogy but it's quakers feeling conflicted about hierarchies in their fantasies
using quaker business method to define the relationship
meeting for worship for business
agenda
1. what are we
i'm sure there are quakers out there managing to have perfectly kinky sex while keeping hierarchies confined to the bedroom but i *am* cracking up at the idea of calling your submissive "friend" during sex to reinforce the idea that consensual subjugation doesn't detract from the fundamental equality at work here
peace, equality and simplicity in the streets
violence, hierarchy and complexity in the sheets
#I've been having VERY Quaker thoughts lately about the way we use the language of violence and conflict #outside of those contexts - why do we have to 'fight' for things? #which is exactly the sort of useless linguistic propriety politics that I detest #but nevertheless surely there is a form of king and lionheart relationship that would work for Quakers #does the lionheart in fact have to fight? Or can they purely be prepared and trained to? #(I have a LOT of feelings about the validity of training martial arts as a pacifist - spoiler I am pro) #anyway I feel like the Quaker equivalent of brothers in arms is being in prison together for protesting #ideally - for the irony - for protesting war #rip op inviting a clearness committee for your kink (via @nimblermortal)
first of all that last tag made me snort-laugh, thank you for that. meeting for clearness on the implications of having hierarchies in the bedroom. can you imagine
(as i said in one of the other reblog threads, this is as much/more about what kind of thing i find sticky and interesting in fiction than about my personal life, but moving on from that...)
relevant context i think is that i am a medievalist who was thinking of quite specific epic and chivalric 'friendships' (in the expansive sense of the term) when i wrote this post, where a) physical violence is integral and they don't exist without it because the relationship is fundamentally a battlefield relationship and b) hierarchy is also integral. okay it's cú chulainn/láeg i was thinking about cú chulainn/láeg we all know i was thinking about cú chulainn/láeg. so. we have both hierarchy and violence at the heart of what makes the relationship what it is. it is a warrior-charioteer pairing. it exists because they play complementary roles in a fight, that is the entire definition of their roles and their relationship with each other. if they are not in a fight then the thing that defines them to each other collapses. so i do think in fact that there is no way to explore that relationship in a pacifist or non-hierarchical way, much as there is plenty of potential to think about the moments between acts of violence and the ways in which it subverts or flattens those hierarchies (which it does! textually! they're way more complicated than people think!)
that said i really love your image of brothers in arms in prison together for protesting war and one day when my fic-writing brain returns from the, uh, not war i guess, i would love to play with that idea more
i mean it's not like i haven't written fics that detached these characters from their context of Blood Murder Extraordinaire. but notably the one long fic i've written where there isn't this hierarchy or any murder happening between cú chulainn and láeg is also the one where that's not the pairing i'm remotely focused on, because it is precisely the juiciness of that hierarchy-that-isn't-what-it-seems and the mirror-and-match battle bro energies that make it interesting to me
anyway not that this post was just about fic. it was mostly about how i use medieval literature to process my life but medieval literature is embedded with values that are fundamentally opposed to my own and sometimes this is a struggle. my nhs gender clinic sex therapist had a real interesting time with me that summer i think. notably very little actual sex therapy happened but we DID talk about quaker trauma and medieval lit a lot so, whatever,

Hello Tumblr, I’m told you like fairies
I think when a sub says "you can do whatever you want to me" what they're actually wanting is to not make decisions anymore, and they think by saying this they can foist the decision making off on the dom without having to do any of the work beforehand. But unfortunately to get to the Not Making Choices part of kink you do in fact have to make a Lot Of Choices beforehand and communicate those choices to your partner. This is an essential part of the process and skipping it is both unsafe and unfair for whoever you're playing with.
Not Making Choices is the reward for communicating clearly, not the default
I remember when I was younger, anytime I watched a movie where the characters have to kill a scary monster/alien, I always thought the act of killing it was intended to be part of the horror. Like there’s this amazing creature that we’ve never seen before, and maybe under different circumstances we could’ve coexisted with it, but it’s trying to attack you and you have to defend yourself, but by destroying it you also destroy the ability to ever understand it and that’s sad and is supposed to make you feel conflicted.
It was not until well into my adulthood that I realized most people do not have complicated feelings about movies where people have to kill a scary alien monster, nor is that necessarily meant to be part of the narrative (unless it very obviously is). They just want the scary thing to die because it’s scary. I don’t have a real conclusion to this I just started thinking about it for some reason.

Literally obsessed with this image.
For the curious, this is not a statue.
It's still from a super artsy 1995 claymation short.

Being a notorious robotlover in the current state of "AI" is the worst. I love robots discovering how they process their feelings in fiction, but when a chatbot pretends it knows how to love it feels like an insult to the craft

Maybe this is an unpopular hot take, but I think a good monster girl design should struggle with day-to-day life in a human world. If your monster girl can live a normal human life where her greatest inconvenience is wet dog smell or people assuming her tail is fake, you need to mix more monster in your girl.
Harpies who can't write or type or open most containers with their wings. Werewolves who worry about hurting someone if they get overstimulated at the wrong time. Minotaurs with digestive systems and metabolisms which require grazing throughout the day, not the three big meals humans are used to.
Lamias who have to stay home in the evenings and during cold months to stay warm, otherwise their muscles stop working right and they get stranded. And they're sick of their human friends suggesting they get some kind of tail sweater. It wouldn't help, the problem is that their body doesn't produce enough heat to begin with, and anyways a tail garment would get in the way of their rectilinear locomotion, and there's no way a sweater would survive being walked on in the first place. It feels like they don't actually care about you being stuck at home whenever they go out, they just want to feel like it's not their fault they never see you.
If your monster girl can't be read as some kind of disability allegory, you're doing something wrong.
yes!
there's a lot of grievance i have over monster girl design philosophy/exploration and this is one of them. i feel like another grievance i have toward monster girl designs is that the human dimorphism far outweighs + undermines monster girl part. the monster part is an afterthought (girl with dog ears and tail AT BEST).
harpies can be explored greatly based on whatever bird they're designed off of. lammergier girls who break jars in their talons by dropping them from great height since they don't possess thumbs. werewolf girlies who are debilitated by the sound of the vacuum cleaner. or monster girls who can 'recognize' their partners and peers by smell, but not faces.
there is so much that can be done with proper exploration of monster girls and it aggravates me why this isn't done more.
people get real weird as soon as the trans man they're talking about has a cock instead of a 'boypussy' huh lmao
yall need to realize that some (a lot of!) trans man have cocks! cocks indistinguishable from cis male cocks! trans man =/= boypussy
"yeah i love trans men omg i love boypussy!!!" ok do you love trans men when they are indistinguishable from cis men? when they have no vaginas, and cocks and balls?
not hijacking! they very much do talk about it in similar ways! there's a comment i added somewhere in the reblogs that talks about how shitty slogans like "real men have pussies" and "real women have cocks" are and what they imply about trans people who have lower surgery
people talk about and excerpt the smutty passages from like romantasy booktok hits or whatever and sometimes it's to be "lol look at this embarrassing porn" and other times it's like a self-serious lit person being like "well certainly one can infer that the books' explicit erotic content is much of their appeal 🧐" but nobody is willing to do the real work of like actually discussing why these scenes are bad at being pornography and not sexy or titillating at all. i mean i guess clearly they are successfully this for probably literally millions of people so that's not quite the right phrasing. but it's like the reason i don't read this stuff isn't because it was written to be jerkoff material it's because it's lousy jerkoff material. and it's lousy jerkoff material in ways i actually think are somewhat interesting to discuss from a craft perspective such as an abundance of cliche and a tendency for individual character dynamics to disappear once the fucking starts and an overreliance on banal physical description of insert tab A into slot B. but nobody is ready for this conversation because either they think it's embarrassing or morally wrong that romantasy jerkoff material exists or because they have extremely low literary standards for jerkoff material. everybody on earth it seems falls into one of these two categories except, of course, Me And My Mutuals
tbh excellent tags and also I am fed up beyond belief at how a lot of research tends to treat sexuality as like. a purely biological/developmental phenomenon, rather than being deeply embedded in our social, cultural, and emotional landscapes. it's this kind of anti-psychoanalytic backlash we see with the rise and predominance of highly empiricist cognitive-behaviorism and it makes me actually very mad because it throws the humanities out of a very human science. STEM in general is often a step or two behind critical theory in terms of missing obvious sampling/interpretive bias because of a blindness to one's own assumptions, but it's especially egregious when it's social sciences. kill the idea of research being Objectively Factual And Logical with stones please
