A reminder to everyone...
. on We Heart It.
An artist has come up with a very innovative way of making mental illnesses more beatable and rallying the sufferer’s spirit against something tangible: he drew some of the most common conditions as mythological monsters. Toby Allen, a Cornish artist drew anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, social anxiety, avoidant personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, paranoia and dissociative identity disorder.
Depression:
A medical illness that causes a constant feeling of sadness and lack of interest. It affects how the person feels, behaves and thinks.
Feeling sad, or what we may call "depressed", happens to all of us, and it usually passes after a while. However, people with a depressive disorder find that their state interferes with daily life.
Some people are afraid of admitting they have depression. One of the main reasons why is of the fear of getting labeled and being thought of as a freak. They think that nobody would understand what they're feeling. That's why they try their best to hide it.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder:
PTSD, is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a traumatic event or ordeal. With PTSD, the "fight-or-flight" response, which is a healthy reaction meant to protect a person from harm,is changed, damaged, and often over activated. People who have PTSD may feel stressed or frightened even when they're no longer in danger.
While mental illness may not show on the outside, it certainly affects people on the inside.
Eating Disorders:
Eating disorders are mental illnesses that cause serious disturbances in a person’s everyday diet.
The condition may begin as just eating too little or too much but obsession with eating and food takes over the life of a person, leading to severe changes.
There are 3 common types:
Anorexia Nervosa: it is when someone starves themselves because of the constant fear of becoming fat.
Bulimia Nervosa: it is when a person eats a lot of food all at once (binge) then vomits it all out once they're done.
Binge Eating Disorder: it is when a person consumes large enormous quantities of food, even when not hungry.
Eating disorders are more common in adolescents who are concerned about how they look and feel self-conscious about their bodies.
Recovering from an eating disorder is brutal and requires time and patience.
Whenever someone mentions that they have a mental illness or any mental issue, people view them as sick or abnormal people when in fact they're absolutely normal. Help us in raising awareness of mental illnesses and trying put an end to this stigma!
Bipolar disorder:
People with bipolar disorder experience extreme swings in mood – from periods of overactive, excited behaviour – known as ‘mania’ or ‘manic episodes’ – to deep depression.
Some people also see or hear things that others around them don't (known as having visual or auditory hallucinations) or have uncommon, unshared, beliefs (known as delusions).
