I will never understand why so many people in this fandom seem fascinated by the idea of Rip Hunter wanting to undo/get rid ofĀ Lily Stein.
Look, Iād have loved to see a scene in which Rip was introduced to Lily and realized what exactly had to happen to lead to her conception.Ā I do feel like we were robbed a little of that.
But as amusing as I think Ripās reaction to Lily would be, there is nothing in the show to indicate that he would ever want to get rid of the poor girl.
First of all, people seem to think that Rip is a lot more draconian when it comes to the timeline than he actually is in practice.
In season one, Rip describes his job as a Time Master asĀ āmaking discreet alterations to the timeline.āĀ Ā Weāve seen him respond to the crewās various attempts to change their timeline (both on purpose and accidental) with a relative lack of concern.
He specifically describes the timeline asĀ āin fluxā when it comes to their futures.Ā And in Legendary even acknowledges that technically Sara and Quentin Lance were supposed to die when Laurel did.Ā He changed that.
So even though Rip is concerned with the general timeline, he doesnāt seem to be terribly concerned with smaller variations.Ā As long as Lilyās presence doesnāt lead to a dramatic turn to the worst (i.e. her grandson becomes the next Per Degaton), thereās no real reason for him to be particularly concerned.Ā Heāll jot it down, keep an eye on the timeline, and move on.
Second of all, if Rip genuinely thought Lily was a problem, he had five years to deal with her before he and his Bureau saved Los Angeles.Ā Heās shown no indication of doing so.
Heck, look at Amaya.Ā If Amaya stays in the future, Mari wonāt exist.Ā And that could lead to all sorts of problems.Ā Rip and Amaya apparently discussed this issue, but at no point has it been indicated that Rip tried to force her to go home.Ā If anything, Amayaās dialogue indicated that SHE sought HIM out for answers.
If Rip isnāt going to force Amaya back home, when we know damn well that Mari is important, then why would he want to get rid of Lily?
Third of all, Rip is a flawed man.Ā He can be focused to the point of fanaticism.Ā He can cross lines for the sake of what he sees as a greater good.Ā He can be a hypocrite.
But one thing that heās always emphasized is how much he doesnāt want his vendetta to cost his team their lives and loved ones.Ā And this especially comes up in the context of Clarissa.Ā Rip takes Martinās relationship to Clarissa very seriously.Ā He helps Martin preserve his marriage in the second episode.Ā And Clarissaās not remembering Martin in Last Refuge is one of the key reasons that Rip decides that they need to go straight for Savage at the height of his power.Ā Ā
Rip says more than once that he doesnāt intend that Martin lose his own wife in the quest to help Rip save/avenge his.
So now, Martin has an impossible daughter.Ā Heās suddenly been given a great gift that Rip lost.Ā Ā
I can imagine that Rip would have a lot of mixed feelings about this.Ā And a lot of them negative: jealousy, pain, anger.Ā Itās kind of unfair, isnāt it?Ā To have lost a child and then see a friend accidentally stumble into having one?
But I think heād be happy for Martin too.Ā And I think heād be very emotionally invested in the idea of Martin getting to keep his family.Ā If only because Rip couldnāt keep his own.Ā I canāt imagine a situation where Rip would ever want to take this away from Martin.Ā He knows what that feels like.
