Peter, king David, and Jesus- Acts 1:18-20- Blog 9-5.4.21
Happy Tuesday family, may the fourth be with you! I finished the book of John yesterday and starting the book of the Acts of the Apostles! From a church history perspective this is such a important time for early Christians. Jesus was just resurrected and spent the following 40 days teaching the apostles about the kingdom of God, before returning to the right hand of God the Father. (Acts 1:1-9). The passage I want to focus on is Acts 1:18-20, Psalms 69:25, and Psalms 109:8. So apostles did not have the canonized bible we are blessed with today, all they had is the oral teachings of Jesus and the Holy Spirit(but not at this point). So since Judas fulfilled his work b betraying Jesus which led to the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Judas committed suicide as stated in Matthew 27:1-10. So the apostles were one short. I bring this up because before the apostles decide to select Matthias to replace Judas, Peter was using scripture from Psalms 69:25, and Psalms 109:8 to justify why they had to replace Judas.
Acts 1:18-20- “(Judas had bought a field with the money he received for his treachery. Falling headfirst there, his body split open, and spilling out all his intestines. The news of his death spread to all the people of Jerusalem, and they gave the place the Aramaic name Akeldama, which means “Field of Blood.) Peter continued, “This was written in the book of Psalms, where it says, ‘Let his home become desolate, with no one living in it. It also says ‘Let someone else take his position
Psalms 69:25-”Let their homes be desolate and their tents be deserted.”
Psalms 109:8- “ Let his years be few, let someone else take his position”
Peter is making the connection between King David and Jesus. Now we know ni the beginning of the Matthew, scripture shows the genealogy of Jesus all the way from King David(Matthew 1:17). Of course this proves that Jesus is the Messiah that came from the lineage of King David. But also Peter knows that the Jews clung to Old testament scripture, so connecting Jesus to King David. It is also an important distinction of Peter using scripture to support a point or claim is making.
How does this relate to us today? Old testament scripture points to Jesus and supports Him being the Messiah, Eternal Son of God. Also we as Christians should always have scripture to support what we believe!
