psa: google translate sux, use DeepL

As someone who has to use translation software for work and has done comparison-testing between different options:

Use DeepL translations, not Google and definitely not Microsoft.

I work with someone bilingual and he helped me test which of the above works the best, and by far it's DeepL. It's so good he told me I don't need to run translations past him before sending them out, he trusts it.

So if you are writing fic and want to include something in another language (for instance, Paris speaking French or Ethan's multilingualism, etc) do not use google translate, use DeepL.

You can also click on specific parts of the DeepL translation to have it explain why it's using that translation and if it's not conveying the right meaning, you can select other options.

I would always recommend looking into language-specific phrases to adjust what you use to tailor them to the character, but that depends on how much effort you wanna put in.

As someone who did a degree in languages, deepL was the translator software most often recommended by my professors.

If you want to search for one specific word or term, I also highly recommend word reference!

Not to shit on this, because DeppL is really good, but beware, they collect your data to train their LLM:

See how they used the words 'neural networks and algorithms'? That's another Term for AI It's not yet full blown generative AI... but who knows if DeepL won't jump on that bandwagon soon?

They only talk about translations keeping the copyright, they don't mention improvements made to your texts. Sooo... bit ambiguous here, would not trust this.

For me, this is an acceptable trade because I'm not putting entire paragraphs of fic into it, I am putting a single line of dialogue. Also I have never and will never use their Write program. But everyone should follow their own judgement and comfort.

(Also all the same shit would apply to Google and Microsoft's translations too)

23 things to try if your story isn’t working for you:

Change the protagonist of the story.

Change the main characters’ personalities.

Make your characters’ personalities affect the plot in some way.

Figure out which characters have opposing desires. Let them get in each other’s ways.

Tell the story from the antagonist’s POV.

What’s the conflict? Does it make sense? Is it a strong conflict? Does it make sense that your characters are fighting this battle? What are the stakes?

Change the main settings of the story.

Make your story’s settings affect the plot in some way.

Up the tension and/or suspense. Build up your atmosphere.

Mess around with the tone/mood of the story.

Re-tell your story as a comedy/horror/etc.

Use a different narrative technique to tell the story.

A series of boring events. If your story has too many mundane, boring events that don’t add much to the plot, edit them out or make them more interesting.

Twist some plot. Hidden secrets, betrayal most foul, true identities, etc. Inject some delicious fun with plot twists that aren’t too far-fetched.

Start the story at a different point in the plot.

Pacing and rhythm - Is the pacing too slow? Too fast? Extremely uneven? What can you do to make the story’s rhythm flow better?

Consider a different ending for your story to work towards.

Journal about it: What do you love about it, and what do you think needs to change or be improved?

Backtrack: Where does the story start not working? What decision was made to get to that stage?

Get back to the roots. What is this story about? What are you trying to say with this story? Have you deviated from that at all?

Take a break. Sometimes, we’re just tired and the story’s fine.

Get someone else to read it. A fresh set of eyes can make all the difference. This can be a friend, a writing buddy, or critique group.

If all else fails, put the story into your archives. Maybe one day you’ll go back to it. Maybe you won’t. But you tried, and honed your craft along the way, and every word you wrote for it has brought you closer to becoming the writer you want to be.

I really appreciate how it was formatted as “this is a common problem, here is a solution to try in your own work” and not “oh god, don’t do that!” without any extra help. And I extra appreciated the “don’t rely on adverbs” bit, because they do have their place but they aren’t the only way actions can be emphasized.

I figured out a simple guide to the alignment chart last night

Lawful: Rules matter more to me than individuals. Chaotic: Individuals matter more to me than rules.

Good: Other people’s well-being is more important than my own. Evil: My own well-being is more important than other people’s.

Neutrals: My opinion of what is more important is determined on a case-by-case basis.

So a Lawful Good character’s guiding moral philosophy might be “I follow the rules because the rules keep people safe, even if they are sometimes inconvenient or harmful to me or other individuals.” A Chaotic Evil character’s guiding moral philosophy would be like “Screw the rules and screw you.”
