Don't go overboard. Know/learn your limits. And pace yourself.

DO NOT drink on an empty stomach ((mod has made this mistake before))

Have a glass of water between each drink

Have a plan for getting home safe

When out, surround yourself with trusted friends so you can keep an eye on each other and to have fun

Even though it's a better option than driving, don't walk if it's far from where you live and and across trafficked areas. Always try to get a lift home (from a sober person)
