"That doesn't mean you should be left unprotected." Gruff insistence darkened his eyes, and Ash cursed him for how handsome he looked, even while reprimanding her for her choice of attire. "I will commission the blacksmith to have something made, a chest plate, perhaps."

She nodded sagely, glancing at her chest and the useless buttons of her vest. "Thinking about my chest, were you, Commander?"

Bright pink suited his complexion; it complemented the hazel of his eyes and brought some life to his colourless cheeks. His eyes darted down to her chest before quickly scampering away to just about anywhere else. "No, um, I…I was not thinking about…" He pinched the bridge of his nose, avoiding looking at her directly. "I simply meant…I was concerned about your safety, that is all."

"Maybe you're right, I should protect my assets. Someone has to be responsible for giving you soldiers something to fight for." Her grin nearly split her face, her arm under her breasts pushing them up, if only to fluster the Commander just a little bit more.

Leliana's musical giggle fluttered up from behind her, and triumph coursed through her veins. Cullen threw his hands up in exasperation. "Maker's Breath, why do I even bother?"

Relief soared with downy wings when Ash spotted another elf among the throngs of humans. However, disappointment moulted her feathers—this particular elf was a condescending prick. If she’d known that, she likely would have chosen a different opener, and not: “So, what’s a knife ear like you doing in a place like this?”

His lip had practically curled as he scanned her Dalish robes and Dalish markings, his face bare of any vallaslin. Perhaps if she’d seen anything but the shiny back of his bald head, she would have thought twice about being so casual with him. Suffice it to say, he did not appreciate her sense of humour: his loss, but her current problem.

WIP Wednesday on a Saturday! Thank you for the tag @opheliatrevelyan 🥰 And in honour of your tag, I am sharing a WIP of our two girls for the bodyguard prompt you sent me!

“I’m not wearing this.” The offending piece of cloth shook in her face, and Rae brushed it aside with a disgusted scoff. Lacy, pink ribbons and billowy skirts that would only serve to impede her movement were not Rae’s ideal outfit for missions. Liadan seemed to disagree. “It’s the only other thing I have that will get you into the dress shop with me. You have to look the part or they’ll just throw you out, especially cause you’re—no offence—a one-armed elf. And you’re going to let me brush your hair. I’ll give you my silk gloves to cover your arm, too, unless…you’d rather I go on my own?” “No,” Rae snapped, snatching the dress from Liadan’s hands. “My intel—“ “Yes, yes, I know.” Liadan placed her hands on her hips, momentarily distracting Rae with the movement accentuating her curves and reducing her ire at being interrupted. “Your Red Jennies got some very unreliable intel that I’m going to get ambushed, but my people disagree.” From seemingly nowhere, Liadan produced a brush. Had she sewn large, hidden pockets in her dress? “It’s not like I haven’t taken precautions, I’ve got a knife on me, and I’ll drop this letter and run if I have to.” Rae frowned, holding the gaudy dress up. “That’s a bad plan, you need backup.” “Which is why you’re here.” Freshly baked strawberries had nothing on the sweetness of Liadan’s smile. A weapon in its own right, and Rae folded immediately. Not that she’d let Liadan know the power she held over her, there’d be no living with her—and not that Liadan knew Rae was living with her, but surely she must be bound to notice everything Rae had moved into her apartment in the months since they’d first met.

"You there, mage!"

An annoyed groan coated her throat, and Ash shoved it back down, Sweetpea looking up at her with wide, curious eyes. Given her mage's robes and large staff, it wasn't surprising that she was identified immediately, and she supposed that mage was better than knife ear, at least. Footsteps beating against the dirt and armour clacking alerted her to the man's swift approach—she wasn't going to be able to pretend like she didn't notice him, loud beast that he was.

Ash turned, resting her weight on her carved wooden staff, the large red gem on the top glinting in the warm afternoon light. She cocked her hip, watching carefully as a man jogged up to her wearing…what appeared to be a skinned goose-bear hybrid over his shoulders. Was he trying to hide the carefully combed blonde waves that rested at the base of his skull, or was it simply something he thought was fashionable?

"Are you a new recruit? I haven't seen you here before." He approached with a commanding presence, every step measured and confident as though he ran the place. The authority in his tone sent a jolt of irritation through her, igniting her instinct to retort. Thankfully, she had many years of practice in biting her tongue, hiding cutting remarks behind a smirk. He narrowed his eyes, distrust colouring his honeyed irises, and…the flaming sword of the Order emblazoned on his vambraces.

Ah, a templar then, or at the very least someone sympathetic to their cause and distrusting of mages—it was strange to see one without the uniform. Ash was rather partial to the skirts.

Part 15 of Forwards, Beckon, Rebound

Summary: The ghost of Ashvalla weighs on Cordelia and Cullen's new relationship, and she was bound to be brought up sometime. They could only avoid the past for so long before it slipped the tongue.

Cordelia's time in Arlathan Forest, and with the Veil Jumpers, had settled the antsiness that drove her North in the first place. Surrounded by like-minded people, she learned a great deal and imparted her own knowledge in return. They all shared an interest in ancient Elvhenan, and the sense of community she found was wonderful. If it hadn't been, she likely would've run back to Ferelden indefinitely. Her work with the Veil Jumpers was enlightening and kept her busy, but spirits, it was so much better with Cullen at her side.

There was still danger in addition to the joy, of course. Thedas was at war, and darkspawn were spreading across the forest. But they faced it together. Without the distraction of paperwork and the demands of running either the Inquisition's army or the clinic, he could devote himself more wholly to her. Getting to know him in a more intimate, romantic sense was not only thrilling but calming in equal measure. His presence—his love—calmed something in her she hadn't realized was disturbed. Finally getting to pour her love into him after years of it thrumming within her, unable to be unleashed… it was a relief. Despite the chaos that waged around them, she was unbelievably happy.

On nights like tonight, she no longer had to worry about making her way back to camp alone or staying the night in the workshop. Cullen was there. He would walk back with her, to their tent—preferable for both of them, since sleeping in bedrolls on stone floors was growing tiresome at thirty-eight and nearly forty-one. Now, they could return to their tent with their bed where they'd spent hours over the last few weeks acquainting themselves with each other's bodies. Cullen was particularly fond of burying his face between her thighs at any hour of the day.

But for the moment, he sat with her in the workshop while she tinkered. In contrast to their days with the Inquisition, he was the one making sure she ate when she found herself engrossed in her work.

The item she'd been working on decided it wanted to be in a different shape. As she began to sketch the new arrangement of golden pieces, she snorted. It looked like she was drawing a breast from different angles. Cullen looked up from the letter he was writing, and she spun the artifact around.

"The drawing of this looks like a breast," she said. "If Ash were here, she'd probably say something about how there were better tits to play with." She frowned after the words spilled out of her. Were it not so late, she probably would've had the forethought to keep that anecdote to herself, but there they were. Flexing her left hand, Cordelia returned her focus to her notebook.

"Have you… heard from her? Since she left the clinic last, I mean." What a peculiar question. From Cullen, at least. It was probably her own fault for mentioning Ash in the first place.

She twirled her pencil between her fingers. "No."

The last words Ash ever wrote to her were tucked in her trunk with the rest of her letters. She could be dead. She could've found Rae... but if she had, and it had ended well, she would have come back, wouldn't she? Cordelia thought so, which was why she leaned towards her friend—her bed partner and almost lover—being dead. It was easier than believing she was alive and never came back, not even after Solas's ritual. Easier, but not easy. It wasn't easy to grieve a woman you loved, a woman you didn't know you were in love with until hours before she ran away from you.

OK LAST ONE FOR NOW I PROMMY. Ash/Cullen late night cooking. This could be sooo cute in the modern AU where he's doing a super late shift and this is the only place open usually so they meet a lot over this time. Or in FBR, late night working and she brings him food (or vice versa). I love them taking care of each other and knowing what the other likes hehe

Thank you for this prompt!! It is sooo sweet and I had fun imagining this little moment for them 🥰 I ended up going with FBR, back in Skyhold and before anything we wrote for the series. A nice way to show Ash and Cullen’s friendship before it all blew up!

“You should eat.”

Cullen blinked, the words swimming on the report before him as exhaustion blurred his vision. Or…A clatter made him wrinkle his nose, and the words vanished beneath the plate of…food. Roast chicken, carrots, and a heaping serving of some sort of gravy. He frowned and raised his heavy head.

“Ashvalla.” Surprise coloured his voice. “What are you…it’s late.”

She raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms over her chest in an entirely too distracting manner—was it on purpose? It seemed so; she rarely did anything without some hidden intention, but sometimes he wasn’t certain. Their friendship was still new, and while he had gotten to know her, there was still much mystery surrounding what exactly she wanted from him. Not to mention her past. She was a barmaid, her sister a rogue, and…she adopted a cat somewhere along the way. Every time he attempted to dig deeper, she’d distract and deflect with a clever quip or something flirtatious to make him blush.

“Sweetpea came to tell on you.” Ashvalla pointed to the grey tabby sitting pretty near the door, staring at him with those large, unnerving eyes that saw too much. “She wouldn’t leave me alone until I picked up some food and followed her here.”

“I see.” His lips pursed, eyeing the cat—supposedly, but there was something about the feline that was far too intelligent to be a simple cat. “You need not worry about my well-being. I promise I can take care of myself.”

Disbelief tilted her brows, and she slid the platter closer to him. “Said the man who frequently misses meals, and no, don’t ask me how I know. How are you supposed to run an army when your body shuts down from lack of nutrition?”

There was no refusing her, of this he was certain, and truthfully, he could use a meal, too lost in his work to realize until the savoury scent of chicken was shoved under his nose. Still, he chaffed at being berated in such a manner.

“I am perfectly capable of ensuring I've eaten enough to survive, I’ve been doing so for thirty years without your intervention,” he grumbled, sharper than he’d intended, but Ashvalla did not balk.

“Then you’ll have no problem eating what I’ve brought. Also, Sweetpea demands it. You no doubt spurned her mice, but she will not take kindly to further rejections.”

Cullen glanced over at the cat, her tail flicking with irritation. He could only imagine what she would escalate to next, and he was reluctant to find out.

With a sigh, he accepted the platter, picking up a chicken wing and taking a bite. “Better?”

She nodded. “Much. I’ll leave Sweetpea to supervise the rest. I’ve got patrons to return to.”

Not leaving him any room to disagree—or to thank her for attempting to care for him, misguided as it was—Ashvalla turned and swept from his office, leaving her cat behind. Sweetpea remained by the door, her stare holding the weight of a thousand angry men, and he swallowed thickly. Perhaps…The barn cats who lived on his family’s farm were skittish towards humans—until they were bribed with treats. Cullen ripped a chunk of chicken off the bone and bent down to hold it out for her.

When she didn’t move any more than to glance between him and the chicken, he said, “Don’t make me look any more foolish than you already have.” And he took another bite of the drumstick for good measure, an attempt to let her know he would continue to eat.

Seemingly satisfied, Sweetpea trotted over to him, her tail held high, and promptly snatched the chicken from his hand—jumping up on his desk to chew loudly beside his platter. How…appetizing. He sighed again, but resigned himself to his fate. There were worse things than spending his dinner with a pesky cat. He only wished her mother had stayed, too. Perhaps another time.

Until she leaves in search of Rae, whom she had a falling out with years prior over their status as Agents of Fen’Harel. When Cordelia finds her again 5 years later, Ash is controlled by Ghilan’nain, and they need to save her.

Silver Linings - Cullen summons a succubus by accident, and Ash is pleased that her new summoner is very handsome. Unfortunately for them both, feelings grow until they can’t be denied anymore.

When the Wanting Shows - Rowan gets recruited to HOF’s team, and against her will starts to fall for Alistair. But she refuses to show her face fully, knowing it would give another clue as to her true Darkspawn nature.

"You smell nice.” Elderflower and armour polish and…whatever else scented his tinctures that Ash could no longer recall in her booze laden memory.

“Oh?” Cullen’s quill stilled, and he tilted his head, glancing sidelong at her—as difficult as it was, given she’d draped herself over his shoulders like a much more fashionable mantle.

The world spun around her, illuminated by the warm light of the melting candles perched on his desk. Vague memories swirled around her mind of being deposited against her will by large, grey hands and a deep, rumbling chuckle, but anything else was beyond her. Not that she particularly cared when Cullen was there, the corner of his lips ticked up in an amused smirk.

“Mhm,” she hummed, shifting her weight, bringing her nose against his neck and taking several short sniffs. Cullen laughed, cringing away from her tickling breath, but she followed. “Very-*hic*-nice.”

“Ashvalla,” he admonished with no real bite, “you promised you would refrain from interrupting.”

Ash frowned. “I don’t…remember that.” Then, she sniffed again, and this time he twisted from her grasp. His hands gripped her shoulders, her eyelids drooping as she shot him her best smile. He rolled his eyes, but he sighed in resignation, and Ash applauded herself for having won a game she had no idea she’d been playing.

“We should get you to bed before I cover this report in ink blots. You’re far too distracting like this.”

Her smile sharpened into a grin. “Flushed and ready for you, vhenan?”

Over a year of their courtship, and he still blushed at her flirtations—though not as fiercely as he once did, much to her dismay. “Drunk and likely to regret your decisions in the morning,” Cullen corrected. “Come on, you will need help up that ladder.”

Without waiting for a reply, he stood, rounded his chair, and lifted her into his arms. She flopped uselessly, pressing her face against the crook of his neck, her legs wrapping around his waist, and buried her fingers in his mantle for stability. Surrounded by the safety of his embrace, she pressed her content into his skin in the form of many small kisses.

His arms tightened around her. “Ashvalla, I would rather not drop you.”

“Then don’t.” She punctuated her words with another kiss, followed by several more.

He scoffed, but he did not request her to cease her affectionate activity. “Hold on tight, alright?”

With all the power of a drunken woman on a mission, she clasped her thighs around his waist, locked her arms around his neck, and hiccuped. Cullen released her, testing to ensure she’d followed his instruction, and once satisfied, began his climb. This was not the first time they’d ascended to his room like that, sober or drunk, and she was well versed in how to hang on.

In a matter of seconds, he safely maneuvered them into their loft and carried her over to the bed, placing her down on the firm mattress. She flopped back with a breathy giggle, gaze fixed on the stars winking at her from the hole in the ceiling. Chill night air hit her feet, and she frowned, certain she’d had her boots on to avoid the large muddy puddles from the recent spring thaw. Ash glanced down, understanding dawning as Cullen gently removed her second boot. Moonlight shone against his pale skin, illuminating his strong jaw and the golden strands of his hair. Painfully handsome, as always. If she were lucky, perhaps he’d let her play with them before sleep took her.

Once her boots were removed and she’d started shimmying out of her robes with little success, he helped her out of her stockings, cueing her with softly murmured instructions when he needed her cooperation. Ash grumbled as her arms got trapped in her sleeves, and he chuckled, shaking his head with fond exasperation, but he helped her out of her sticky situation, too.

The restriction of her breast band irritated her, and she rolled over onto her stomach with a dramatic groan. She reached back, haphazardly tapping her back in hopes that he understood what she was asking.

“Yes, dear,” he said patiently, and set about freeing her from the bindings. She took a deep breath and was relieved to find he’d made quick work of her breast band. Fresh air filled her lungs, and she released it with a happy sigh.

Ash mumbled her thank you and rolled onto the open side of the bed he created for her, landing on her back. Shuffling sounds came from her bedside, and she cracked an eye open to find Cullen opening her jar of moisturizer—a necessity for her burn scars, lest they grow itchy and likely to tear. How lucky she was to have someone who cared for her so deeply, and how far they had come to get there. Through strife and pain and far too much to name, they’d settled into the comfort of their love. She closed her eye again, her love an ache in her chest she would never wish away.

The mattress dipped as Cullen sat beside her, prodding her gently to roll onto her opposite side, and he began working moisturizer into her scarred skin. He began at her cheek, moving down her neck, her arm, lingering over her stomach, and to the worst of the burns at her hip.

"Spending a lot of time on my backside, hm?" she teased.

He huffed a quiet laugh, though it failed to hide the melancholy of his touch and the light kiss he placed on her hip bone. "I know you dislike when I take the blame for your injuries, but I would have liked to have the foresight to commission a tasset for you as well. More protection could have saved you some pain."

She wrinkled her nose, searching for her limited knowledge on the different parts of armour—taught almost entirely by Cullen himself. Tasset…right! Metal plates that sat over one's hips. "None of us could've known."

He hummed his agreement. "Yet the sentiment remains."

Had she the wherewithal, perhaps she would have corrected his way of thinking, but words of reassurance swam in her mind, firmly out of reach no matter how hard she tried to grab them. Cullen continued moisturizing her leg in silence, and once finished, he moved back up the bed, his fingers ghosting over her skin as he brushed her bangs from her face. She turned onto her back, her eyelids fluttering open, heavy with exhaustion but needing to gaze upon his handsome face like she needed air. His hand cupped her cheek, his lips curved in a soft smile, and his eyes…Love pulsed in her heart, sending her pulse into an erratic rhythm. If someone were to tell her that he was the one possessed by a spirit of love, she would be inclined to believe them. It practically radiated from every pore, lighting up his face and warming her down to her core.

“Stop looking at me like that.” Her hand flopped about in a useless attempt to ward him off. “I’ll fall in love all over again.”

Cullen chuckled, ducking his chin, though his love did not dim. “Would that be so terrible?”

A smile stretched her cheeks, and she giggled. “No.”

“Then the matter is settled.” He tucked the sheets up to her chin, and she didn’t have the heart to tell him she’d kick it off as soon as he left—too warm already. When he returned, he’d see for himself, but hopefully her bare breasts could distract him from thoughts of sheets. In her opinion, they were much more important.

“G’night, Cullen,” she said as she nuzzled into his palm.

He pressed a kiss to her forehead. “Goodnight, Ashvalla. I’ll return with water for you, should you need it.”

Ash hummed in lieu of acknowledgment, and before Cullen’s weight beside her could ease, she fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.
