I was thinking earlier today of ways in postcanon Yusaku could make his apartment more like a home and less like, well a hovel, and I got brain blasted by the visual imagery of a Yusaku and Shima convo about Link Vrains duelists where Yusaku ends up naming Revolver as a duelist he likes. Shima's shocked but he's ultimately chill with it, reluctantly rattling off some of Revolver's good points and why people could like him, while Yusaku occasionally adds, corrects, or dismisses. This is somehow the most engaged Yusaku has ever been in a conversation with him.

Couple days later Shima gives Yusaku a bag with a large rolled up piece of thick paper. It's a poster depicting Revolver's avatar, an admittedly good shot clearly taken during a duel. Shima hems and haws about giving Yusaku a gift, one that's revealed Shima fixed himself since he's surprisingly heated about proper compensation regarding merchandise money (cause oddly based Shima is my favourite thing), and no one's selling legal Hanoi merchandise so Fujiki probably didn't have anything of his favourite duelist, so Shima took pity on him. Yusaku is very close to laughing at the absurdity of the situation, while also feeling…. kinda touched.

He hangs up the poster on his wall as soon as he gets home.

Next time Ryoken visits Yusaku's apartment he takes one look at the thing proudly displayed on Yusaku's newly-painted wall, blue-screens for a moment, before blurting out "What the hell is that?" Yusaku, entirely nonchalant: "A present from a classmate."

Okay normally I would agree, but in the case of "Varis" it's actually not bad. They couldn't name him "Revolver" in the dub for obvious reasons, so they did the next best thing. They named him after the VARIS Rifle from Code Geass. They couldn't use the original gun, so they used a more obscure, fictional gun instead.

Also "Ghost Gal" I think is actually better than "Ghost Girl" simply because it flows better in english and is closer to the original Japanese pronunciation "ゴーストガール" [goーsuto gaーru]

I was less talking about their virtual names (I didn't clarify that tbf) but Varis being a reference to the Varis rifle is something I actually didn't know and that is awesome. And Ghost I get too.

As for the real names being changed - I just personally dislike a lot of them. Like, Takeru Homura, sounds cool, badass just sick. Then you have Theodore Hamilton, just goofy, token straight friend and like imagine the guy beating five people up introduces himself with that name 😭

Also I don't get why they localise some but not all. Going from Ryoken to Roken - they just stole the Y??? Yusaku gets to stay the same tho. Kusanagi become Cal Kolter but Jin keeps his first name? Ok huh. Aoi to Skye I can get behind, just a shame that her name doesn't match with Akira that well anymore.

Please mind this all just me being a hater because I am way too invested in this framchise
