Is there a particular reason why NRC has such a hostile atmosphere to the point where teamwork is a rarity, everyone's moral compass is a roulette wheel, and the other dorms can't stand each other to the point where they drive intruders off with violence and even lasers in the case of Ignihyde? Other magic schools like RSA and Noble Bell all seem pretty chill by comparison. Heck, we know for a fact RSA is revered for their students all having excellent teamwork.
Like obviously NRC is like this because Twist is all based around villains, but what's the Watsonian reason? Does the Dark Mirror only pick mages with fierce independent streaks and other antagonistic personality traits?
To be fair, we don’t know what methods Royal Sword Academy and Noble Bell College employ to add to their student body. It could be that they have selection methods which consider different aspects than Night Raven College does. Maybe RSA also factors in traits like personality and willingness to get along with or to hep others. This could therefore result in a completely different student body composition and atmosphere among the boys.
Crowley states in the prologue-19: “My students have all been selected by the Dark Mirror for their exceptional talent and potential. But great talent begets great pride and big egos. Most are so self-reliant and self-centered that they never even consider cooperating with others.”
It seems that because the Dark Mirror is picking students primarily for their magical talent and potential, they often come with the caveat of pride. And why wouldn’t they? Magic is so rare in the human population—only 10% of them can have it, and most of that 10% can barely lift a cup with magic. NRC boys are the cream of the crop.
Quite honestly, the NRC students were probably already using their magic prior to NRC to “get ahead” of their peers. For example, Epel used his magic to beat other kids up, Azul used his UM to take advantage of his bullies, etc. Magic makes them special, it makes them stand out, it allows them to do things most other kids cannot. This would naturally feed into their burgeoning egos and sense of pride.
Other NRC students already dealing with difficult circumstances that forced them to become resilient to cope, and that probably just translated over into their crystallized personalities. Vil was in showbiz, Riddle dealt with his relentless mother, etc.
