Top tips for language learners
Write down every new bit of vocab you encounter.Â
Learn your grammar thoroughly. Use apps like memrise or quizlet to help you learn vocab better.Â
Read books in the language you are learning, if you havenât been learning for long childrenâs books are great for this because the language is simpler.Â
Write out explanations for complicated grammar in a notebook in your own words so you understand them more.Â
Get any essays you write marked by your teacher or a native speaker so you can learn from your mistakes.Â
Get a pen pal or exchange student - you can learn so much about the culture of the country your language is from.Â
Try and watch TV or listen to music in the language.Â
Do lots of language and grammar exercises to have more practice.Â

What to do in a free period
Itâs so important to use your free periods productively; here are a few ideas (not all of them study related) of what you could do in that time:
Catch up on any work that you have missed
Make a start on any homework/assignments that you have been given
Start writing up some notes
Make some flashcards
Complete some practise questions or past papers
Look through your classâ syllabusÂ
Go over and review some older notes
Sort through any emails you have
Look at some university prospectuses online
Write a to-do list for the day/the following day
Plan out the rest of your week
Work and study with someone else who is in your classes
Read a book
Listen to a podcast
Get some fresh air, take a coffee break and talk to friends so youâre ready and refreshed for the next lesson

How to create a strong voice in your writing
Become well acquainted with the text and prompt youâre writing about. Know exactly what youâre writing about before you even open microsoft word. The better you know the material, the more solid your argument or analysis will be. If youâre writing an opinion essay that is entirely from your head, write down your thoughts and organize them.Â
Have a solid argument and find proof for your argument. Itâs a good idea to write a thesis statement before you write anything else in a paper. Make sure you know what youâre going to argue and make sure you have proof to back up what you want to say. Thereâs nothing worse than getting halfway through a paper before realizing you donât have as much evidence as you originally thought you had.Â
Write in a confident manner. Donât say âThis might be why (character) does (thing).â Even if you arenât confident about your reasoning, fake it till you make it. Say âThis explains why (character) does (thing).â Try to avoid words like âprobablyâ âmaybeâ âmight.â Youâre making an argument and you need to make it clear that you believe what youâre saying.Â
Write as if youâre arguing about something youâre very passionate about. Not many people feel particularly passionate about how Gatsby represents the American dream, but the trick is to sound like you care. Imagine that youâre having a debate with a friend about something that you care deeply about and write in a similar manner.Â
Use quotes to back up your argument, but donât let quotations take over your paper. A good writer knows when a quote is necessary or when you can simply paraphrase. You want to use quotes as evidence for your argument, so donât use a mile long quote when a small section of the quote would suffice. The more quotes you have, the easier it is to lose your voice and argument.Â
