Based on the DC Universe show: Takes place during one of the first battles the new Titans have together. Though some people don’t go by the plan
—————————————————————————-
Silence was a very rare occurrence with the young group of teens. If it wasn’t Jason and Rose fighting over the last bow of ceral or Gar typing away at leads late at night, it was usually the everyday sounds of roommates living together
Silence meant that no good was to come
[[MORE]]They sat around the dinning room table, all but the center light on. Still dressed in their superhero garb, the silence dared for someone to speak up. No one budged, the dame of emotions ready to break when the conversation started.
Of course Jason was the one to break the tension. “I don’t understand why he’s even mad. We still got the bad guy.” His mask was sitting in the center, his legs kicked up on the table.
“Yeah, but you didn’t follow the plan, Bird Brain.” Rose threw her weapons onto the ground, the heavy clank vibrating the floor. “You went off track and tried to do your own shit.”
“Not to mention it was our first time without Dick or Kory.” Gar spoke up, starting to take his boots off.
“And? Nothin’ happened! We didn’t need them. We got the bad guy, the jewels are safe and the Titans won again.” He lifted his shoulders, his hands moving behind his head.
“Because the cops had him and you still attacked.” Gar moved to sit on the chair opposite from Jason, sighing. “Dick said—“
“Who cares what Dick said! Dick is one of them pigs anyway, so of course Dick would say anything to make his ‘boys in blue’ look good. I took the asshole down and now he’s in jail.”
Rose rolled her eyes, narrowing them as she glared at him. “You’re really stupid, you know that? You didn’t even notice.”
“Notice what?” Jason looked over at them one by one, not understanding what they were getting at.
“He had a gun, Jason.” Rachel finally spoke up from her place on the kitchen counter. She sat crisis-cross, her mug steaming. She kept her gaze on him, her expression unreadable.
“Man, we didn’t know he had a gun!” Gar leaned into the table. “None of us. Rose and I lost view of you, and we couldn’t move because we had to keep an eye out on civilians. Luckily, Rach could and when you turned, she saw the gun. She got hold of it from where she was, but what if she wasn’t there?”
“It would’ve been fine! Not like I haven’t been shot at before.”
“But you know Dick always says if you need to run after someone, you go in pairs. That’s why he’s mad, Jay. Because—“ Gar started
“Because I ruined his vision! His ‘plans!’ Well, plans break and he’s just butt hurt because I embarrassed him, becaus-“
“Because he was afraid.” Rachel said softly. She set her mug down, moving to let her legs dangle. “I could feel him when he was talking to Kory in the training room. When I gave him the gun, he was scared. If it shot you in the right moment—“
“But it didn’t! So now you are all—“
“Fuck! Can someone actually finish a sentence!” Rose growled as she held a bowl of Cinnamon Toast, standing up. She took her mask off, throwing it with her weapons. “For some reason, Dick actually cares about you and didn’t want you to become a human pin cushion. And if you died, he would have to explain to Angry Ken why your stupid self died. And then he would have to explain to Dawn and so on. So yeah, you were being stupid and almost got your ass killed. And then I would have to spend my weekend in a fucking funeral home with the media up my ass.”
“Like it matters! It isn’t like Bruce doesn’t have another Robin lined up anyway! Some nerdy kid, Timothy or whatever. I die, they’ll just shove him in my place and the world will continue on.”
Rachel tilted her head a bit at him, the uncertain emotions she was feeling from him becoming clearer. She blocked out his and Rose’s yelling, the crunching sound of ceral as she shook her spoon at him. Gar was drumming his fingers, injecting in when he had a moment or two. She watched his defense, knowing the true feelings that was pumping through him. The facade he built.

When everyone finally settled in, she found Jason sparring with himself. He was trying to ignore the small teen, instead hoping she would just leave on her own. As he continued seeing her black sweater in his vision, he suddenly stopped. A cooling affect overtaking his sore muscles.
“Look, if you came to continue the fight, I’m not in the mood. So just kindly get the hell away.” He turned to the empath, breathing heavy.
“I didn’t.” Rachel said, keeping her eyes trained on him.
“Well good, then just le-“
“You know you matter, right?” Her phrasing wasnt meant to be accusing, rather a reminder.
Jason hated the fact that her eyes seemed to look into your soul. Sure, he knew she had some freaky mind reading bullshit
‘Empath. She’s an empath, Jason. It means she can read your feelings. She can’t read your mind’.
He could almost hear Kory’s regal voice ring in his ears. ‘Whatever you say, your highness.’
But that didn’t mean it still didn’t freak him out when her icy puppy dog eyes looked at him like she could see ever sin he’s ever done.
Poor girl would be traumatized
“What are you talking about?”
“Exactly what I said. You know you matter, right?” She repeated, her eyes creasing. She stepped further into the room.
“Is this some test I wasn’t told? Or are you here ‘cause Dick put you up to this?”
“No.” She said, her hands folded in front of her. “I just....” She pushed her lips out in thought. She looked up at him again, seeing his disdained face. “Remember when Dick had us go to the children’s cancer ward in Jump City last month? We were dressed in our suits.”
He nodded, his arms folded over his chest. He would play whatever game she had and go back to his training.
“And the kids roared with joy when you stepped in as Robin. The feelings.... I know you can’t feel it like I can.... but the emotions those little boys were giving out....” She smiled softly as she remembered the overwhelming warmth that overtook her when Jason stepped into the room. “It’s pure— love. Unconditional, raw, love. Those little ones were throwing all this love at you. And little did you know, you were giving it right back. You weren’t pretending. You honestly enjoyed yourself. You and that cocky, stupid grin. You and those kids were one in the same at that moment.”
“My point is Jason.... you matter. And that’s why Rose and Gar were upset you didn’t follow the plan. That’s why Dick got mad you ran off and didn’t let the cops take the robber down when they had the chance. Because we almost lost you last time. Luckily, Connor was able to grab you when he did. But what if I wasn’t there to grab the gun when I did? He could’ve hit you and you wouldn’t have been saved this time.”
“So next time, if you can’t understand why we get upset that you did something like that, at least remember the little boy. Hooked up to an oxygen tank and with maybe three months to live, watching the funeral of his Robin and his heart breaking. Remember that you matter to him and all those other little boys. Remember that you were once that little boy who looked up to a man in a black suit and the joy you felt when you met him.” She finished, her chest heaving at her words. “Just remember.” She turned on her heels, walking out of the room
That was probably the most Jason has heard Rachel talk. And not once did he hear her usual sarcasm or light banter. His arms were still folded over his chest, shifting on his legs when he was sure her footsteps were long gone. He pulled his lips in, his cheeks puffing out with warm air. He looked back at the punching back, kicking it with his foot lightly. “Fuckin’ mind reader....” he mumbled.

The next morning was bustling with the usual banter.
“I’m telling you, Tiger Boy, I am not eating no damn tofu bacon. If I wanted to eat a fucking leather shoe, I would eat a fucking shoe.” Rose wrinkled her nose in disgust as she peeked at his pan, grabbing the orange juice.
“You can’t even tell the difference! And it’s good for the environment.”
“So is those metal straws, but I’m not doing that VSCO girl shit either.” Rose went to sit beside Rachel at the dinning room table, starting on her waffles.
Jason walked into the kitchen, Gar and Rose looking over. He grabbed a bowl, pouring some ceral. Jason glanced over, pouring his milk into the bowl. He turned to look at Rose, then to Gar. The unusual silence back. He went over to the table to sit across from the girls, looking back to Gar. “Actually, tofu isn’t too bad. I’m sure tofu bacon isn’t too bad.”
“Oh, you too! We aren’t having this discussion! I will gladly burn a hole in the Ozone so I don’t have to stop eating real bacon!”
Jason laughed as the fight ensued again, looking over to share a glance with Rachel. They shared a fleeting, soft smile, before she went back to her breakfast.
Maybe it was alright to matter to some people.
