Robin btvs I'm sorry they did that to you
angel the series is lowkey literally just this like he followed the instructions
spike thinks he only fucked angelus for drus amusement and because that was just sort of what u did when u were evil and angel thinks he was cured of his bisexuality when he got a soul
ANGEL THE SERIES // 3.03 "That Old Gang of Mine"
the more i think about it, the less i see fresley as a tragic love story. they weren't a will they-won't they separated by the circunstances... she just didn’t want him (until she randomnly decided she did just to die the next episode). and he was more in love (obsessed) with the idea he had of her as this dream girl than with her. like, it could have been an interesting dynamic if it was never shown as actually romantic, because it barely was. and if they'd never made fred reciprocate his feelings.
Truly insane and stupid that Faith wasn't at all interested in learning about Kendra. Truly insane and stupid that Kendra didn't hang over all of season three like an angry ghost, like a phantom limb that Faith is a poor prosthetic for.
With how much of her characterization is defined by being fixated on/competitive with Buffy and with how desperately she clings to slayerhood as a means of defining herself, Faith should have had at least ONE EPISODE dedicated to Thinking About Kendra. She should have wanted to know EVERYTHING, and we could have had GREAT SCENES of her asking questions that Buffy finds invasive and painful.
Buffy should have compared Faith to Kendra often and unfavorably. Giles and Willow too. Faith should have been competing with Kendra just as much as she was competing with Buffy.
in the original queer coding of magic in buffy's first five seasons, amy is allegorically an incest victim who discovers magic through her mother's abuse of her and then begins to experiment with it on her own terms. this implies that she has feelings for willow. consequently, the turn in season six from queer coding to substance use becomes amy battling addiction after a years long essential magical binge against her will because a spell backfired. after all, magic is dangerous. the show has always said this, even when magic was queer coded. it can kill people. giles and ethan both knew this after having practiced unsafe magic together, during the aids crisis. then fresh off a breakup with tara over her addiction, willow and amy go on a bender together, when amy has harbored something for willow since they were girls, before she was abused and her relationship with power and control changed.
we should talk more about the giles and ethan part later by the way
also this is yet another reason faith should have been in s6, for the incest and csa victim link up and for the addict committing child endangerment trauma multiplying
ok back to the ethan and giles element of magic being queer coded: giles grew up knowing about the fate he would inherit from his father, his occupation passed down to him in the english tradition of inheritance per the great chain of being belief that has sat at the center of english society. the stress of inheritance here matters. there is a reason class is restricted by birthright as a baseline in english society; in the uk, being born into wealth always carries more weight than bringing yourself up to it unlike the us american mythos of pulling yourself up by the boot straps to achieve the american dream.
giles rejects this inheritance as long as he can. he turns to counterculture. he changes his name. becomes someone else. ripper. rupert giles studied magic. ripper experiments with it. with ethan and their friends. it's against the great expectations upon him. it's reckless. it's the '70s. live a little. it's fun until a spell backfires, until the danger becomes tangible and someone ends up dead. ripper breaks it off with ethan and their friends. it was never all that well defined. it wasn't exclusive. it wasn't permanent. he makes it transient and goes back to being rupert giles. puts on his tweed blazer and nice shoes. steps back into his duty, his fated inheritance to do as expected of him in theory.
maybe he'll never be assigned a slayer. most watchers never are. he won't have to practice duty, practice fate. he just studies magic now. he knows how dangerous it is because he's seen it. he'll never do that again. then buffy summers is called, and her first watcher dies.
giles lives in sunnydale, california now, working as a librarian and having to practice being a watcher. he can do this, more or less. he won't grow attached to her. he won't view her as more than the slayer. he'll hate her friends too.
he falls in love with jenny, the first woman he's ever loved. there hasn't ever really been anyone since ethan. he doesn't do that anymore. he's afraid of intimacy. afraid he'll hurt someone again, that they'll hurt him, or they'll hurt someone together. he loves jenny anyway. because he loves buffy more than he ever meant to, jenny will be killed by angel as angelus, the consequence of angel finding true happiness holding buffy post-coitus. giles doesn't stop loving buffy. he can't. he hates himself for it so much that he cannot let himself be buffy's father, no matter how much she needs him to be. he thinks this is the most noble thing he could do.
he has to do his duty because the alternate is too horrifying with all the blood on his hands from when he's strayed from his duty. under the influence of band candy, he sleeps with joyce. twice. it's a bad idea, so it can't happen again or else things will become confused for buffy. he can't be her father.
at most, he'll allow himself comfort from olivia. their relationship has never had many strings attached to it. the baggage isn't there. he's told her about magic of course, to woo her first, but he's kept her at an arm's length away from it all this time. he's seen ethan too many times. there's still something there. they both know it.
ethan roofies him. he never has to think about it, not fully. he stops seeing ethan after that. he tells himself it's for the best. olivia came into contact with magic, and it was his fault. he endangered her by getting too close. they come out of it stronger, though. closer. she didn't believe him, but she does now. it was scary, but she comes back in the end. there could be a future there.
ANGEL THE SERIES // 1.20 "War Zone"
yeah I wonder why people think the vampire is evil
"I hate when people act like Spike is evil"
Spike:
Wesley Wyndam-Pryce in ANGEL
Okay like when Angel is on Buffy he’s lame and pathetic but when I’m watching Angel he’s MY lame and pathetic
BEST OF BTVS: Riley Finn — Season Five
okay okay I knooooowwwww vampirism probably fixed William’s eyesight but like. What if it didn’t though. What if spike just refuses to wear glasses because he’s a stubborn idiot.
Obsessed with how many people in the notes have pointed out why this is probably true lmao (Dalton, Angel wearing reading glasses in the comics, Spike holding documents at length to read them as if he’s farsighted). Like I was joking what do you MEAN I’m probably right.
not even a robot could keep up with being buffy summers
buffy summers crushed under the pressure of being buffy summers so they got a robot to be buffy summers for some time and it crushed under the pressure of being buffy summers too. incredible work
